2014 Plant Descriptions HERILOOM TOMATOES Amish Paste Paste/Sauce; Rare; Certified Organic (74-85 days) This is a very old tomato, a Pennsylvania heirloom, indeterminate, with long, heart-shaped fruits that are sweet and have few seeds. Excellent sauce tomato! Accepted onto Slow Food USA's "Ark of Taste". Beaver Lodge Slicer Red; Early Slicer; Certified Organic (55 days) Determinate. The first tomatoes to ripen in the gardens. They have the wonderful tomatoey taste normally associated with beefsteak tomatoes, unusual for such an early tomato. Determinate plants are so loaded with smooth, blemish free fruit that you can barely see the leaves. Perfect for containers or hanging Moonglow Yellow/Orange Slicer; Certified Organic (80 days) Indeterminate Bright yellow-orange round fruit are one of the best tasting of the yellow orange slicers. Our seed came to us from our web designer whose husband says this is his all-time favorite tomato. Fruit have dense orange flesh with few seeds and have a long shelf life. These 1-1/2 pound beauties have an outstanding flavour that is described as being both sweet and smokey with a hint of citrus. The indeterminate plants are loaded with smooth, multicolored (green, yellow, purple) fruit. The flesh is bright green with deep red streaks. Slices are beautiful arranged on a plate and sprinkled with basil. Blondkopfchen Tiny Yellow Certified Organic; (75 days) Indeterminate. Masses of little yellow cherry tomatoes. Country Taste is a juicy beefsteak tomato with very large, dark red fruits that are packed with real tomato taste. The indeterminate plants yield as well as, if not better than, most hybrids. Extremely juicy fruits grow in clusters of three to four and can reach ½ kg or so. The colour is a striking bright red with orange undertones and the flavour is that wonderful old fashioned tomato taste. Plants are disease resistant and fruits are uniform and blemish free. Chadwick Cherry Cherry red Heirloom certified organic (80 days) Our favorite red cherry. This juicy cherry tomato was selected by the late horticultural genius, Alan Chadwick. The 3.5 cm fruits are borne in clusters of 6, have a sweet delicious tomato flavour and few seeds. Fruits are large for a cherry tomato and are perfect for snacking or in salad. The indeterminate vines are vigorous, highly productive and disease resistant. San Marzano Paste Roma Heirloom Certified organic 78 days. This Italian heirloom is the classic paste tomato. Fruits are long with a pointed tip and thick meaty flesh with very few seeds. Said to be the best tasting paste tomato and we agree—if it gets lots of heat. Compact plants are very productive. Indeterminate. Sasha’s Altai Early slicer; Heirloom; Certified Organic (59 days) Voted one of the ten best early tomatoes by Organic Magazine. Extremely early for a full sized slicer, this slightly flattened bright red tomato comes from Sasha, who grows them in the Altai Mountains of Siberia. Extraordinarily sweet and juicy and blemish free. Bonnie Best Heirloom; indeterminate (70 days) Most popular open-pollinated home garden variety. Medium sized 6oz/160g, firm fruit with good taste. Smooth, bright scarlet, flat globe-shaped fruits on small indeterminate plants. Heavy cropper. Uniform colour. Calliope produces beautiful purple striped with white fruits with green calyx. Asian style fruits that can be picked as 2" baby or left to mature to 3-4" size. High yielding under cool conditions. Plants are nearly spineless. Only 8 plants available Tomatillo (Toma Verde) This is the preferred mexican variety for making salsa. Toma Verde produces high yields of firm 5cm/2” pale green fruit well covered with husk. Non pithy when ripe. PEPPERS SWEET: Double Up Hybrid Organic (72 days) Early maturing, large, sweet bell pepper. Double Up is a very productive variety producing large, blocky, 4 lobbed fruits on strong, medium plants. Turns from medium green to bright red – has great taste and sweetness when mature. It has been a dependable bell in our 2012 and 2013 trials, both in heat and cool weather. SWEET: North Star Hybrid (65 days) First large bell type to turn red. Very sweet and flavourful when mature. Recommended for short season areas, featuring the ability to continually set fruit even under adverse conditions. North Star produces 3-4 lobed sweet, blocky bell pepper. Matures green to deep red. Tolerant to TMV. SWEET: Gypsy Hybrid (60 days) Early and productive pepper. Highly recommended for short season areas. Gypsy’s distinctive golden colour (turning red at maturity) and sweet fresh flavour makes this variety a favourite for salads and frying. Growth habit is compact but vigorous. Combination between a bell and an Italian ramshorn type growing approx. 5” long. Tolerant to TMV. HOT: El Jefe Hybrid Jalepeno (67 days) Our best Jalapeno in trials. El Jefe produces extra large, perfectly shaped and smooth, dark green glossy fruits turning deep red when mature. Great pungent taste with medium heat. Strong vigorous plants hold up its heavy yields. Resistant to TEV, Xcv 1-3 HOT: Super Chili Hybrid (75 days) A red hot chili, 2-3” long pepper. Produces many green, yellow, and red fruits pointing above the compact foliage for easy picking. Excellent as an ornamental plant. Can also be used for a deterrent spray in the garden. HOT: Maya Organic (Habenero) (80 Days) Super hot lantern habenaro. This is one of the hottest peppers available. Maya produce 3" long, dark red, wrinkled peppers. If you can get past the heat they are extremely pungent and packed with spicy taste. Plants are medium sized, dark green and hides its bounty under the leaves.
