Florida Sheriffs Association THE SHERIFF’S STAR ✰ winter 2011 1 FLORIDA SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION OFFICERS A message from the FSA President J. Harrell Reid: There’s nothing like a challengeF toLORIDA spur a more unified SHERIFFS effort. And that’s what we’re experiencing among our Florida Sheriffs. We’ve all been hit by budget cutbacks;A weSSOCIATION know what it’s like to tell committed employees that their job is being eliminated, or we have to cut back their hours. It’s bad enough for someone in a private business to make cuts, but in law enforcement – where salaries are already limited – it stings even more. In the face of cutbacks, it’s critical that Sheriffs have the freedom to shift people and resources in order to keep doing an effective job protecting the people. But there are groups out there that are bent on limiting that freedom. We continue to see our authority eroded by unions pushing for even greater collec- tive bargaining power. That’s why in the upcoming legislative session, Sheriffs will continue to present a united front in defending the constitution- ality and authority of the Office of Sheriff. Make no mistake, the Sheriffs are a force to be reckoned with, and we have the tools in place to go as far as we need to go to protect this Office and the people we serve. Hamilton County Sheriff J. Harrell Reid Tackling crime trends President of the Florida Sheriffs Association Two emerging concerns you’ll also see the Sheriffs battling on your behalf at the Capitol are the proliferation of Internet cafés and pill mills. Both are like parasites that can suck the life out of our communities, and we need to bring them under con- trol before they become an epidemic. They’re dodging existing laws, and we need to take a tougher stance to avoid legalized gambling and feeding addictions through prescription drugs. In the face of budget cutbacks, we’re also preparing our- selves for a fight in the corrections arena. In tough economic times, inevitably some ill-informed lawmaker will propose new laws and programs that release violent criminals early from state prisons. If this is allowed, I can guarantee you that our neighbor- hoods and business communities will see an increase in violent Ben Johnson William O. "Bill" Farmer crime.
