This term paper attempts to situate these monuments in the context of their socio-economic and political scenario through assistance of Waqiat-i-Mushtaqui and tries to traverse beyond the debate of sovereignty, which they have been confined within all these years. Village of Khairpur was the location of some of the tombs, mosques and other structures associated with the Lodi period, however in 1936; villagers were deported out of this space to lay the foundation of a closed campus named as Lady Willingdon Park, in the commemoration of erstwhile viceroy’s wife; later which was redesigned by eminent architect, J A Stein and was renamed as Lodi Garden in 1968. Its proximity to the Dargah of Shaykh Nizamuddin Auliya delineated Sufi jurisdiction over this space however, in due course of time it came under the Shia influence as Aliganj located nearby to it, houses monuments subscribing to this sect, such as Gateway of Old Karbala and Imambara; even the tomb of a powerful Shia Mughal governor i.e.

  • Sayyid Dynasty
SAYYID DYNASTY The Sayyid dynasty was the fourth dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, with four rulers ruling from 1414 to 1451. Founded by Khizr Khan, a former governor of Multan, they succeeded the Tughlaq dynasty and ruled the sultanate until they were displaced by the Lodi dynasty. Khizr Khan (1414- 1421 A.D.) He was the founder of Sayyid Dynasty He did not swear any royal title. He was the Governor of Multan. He took advantage of the disordered situation in India after Timur’s invasion. In 1414 A.D. he occupied the throne of Delhi. He brought parts of Surat, Dilapur, and Punjab under his control. But he lost Bengal, Deccan, Gujarat, Jaunpur, Khandesh and Malwa. In 1421 he died. Mubarak Shah, Khizr Khan’s son succeeded him. Mubarak Shah (1421-1434 A.D.) He was the son of Khizr Khan who got Khutba read on his name and issued his own coins. He did not accept the suzerainty of any foreign power. He was the ablest ruler of the dynasty. He subdued the rebellion at Bhatinda and Daob and the revolt by Khokhars Chief Jasrat. He patronised Vahiya Bin Ahmad Sarhind, author of Tarikh-i-Mubarak Shahi. Mubarak Shah was succeeded by two incompetent rulers, Muhammad Shah (AD 1434- 1445) and Alauddin Alam Shah (AD 1445-1450). Most of the provincial kingdoms declared their independence. Hence, Alam Shah surrendered the throne and retired in an inglorious manner to Baduan. Finally Bahlol Lodhi captured the throne of Delhi with the support of Wazir Khan. Muhammad Shah (1434-1445 A.D.) He defeated the ruler of Malwa with the help of Bahlul Lodi, the Governor of Lahore.

  • An Overview of Medieval India
Dr. Rita Sharma Assistant Professor History An Overview of Medieval India Medieval period is an important period in the history of India because of the developments in the field of art and languages, culture and religion. Also the period has witnessed the impact of other religions on the Indian culture. Beginning of Medieval period is marked by the rise of the Rajput clan. This period is also referred to as Postclassical Era. Medieval period lasted from the 8th to the 18th century CE with early medieval period from the 8th to the 13th century and the late medieval period from the 13th to the 18th century. Early Medieval period witnessed wars among regional kingdoms from north and south India where as late medieval period saw the number of Muslim invasions by Mughals, Afghans and Turks. By the end of the fifteenth century European traders started doing trade and around mid- eighteenth century they became a political force in India marking the end of medieval period. But some scholars believe that start of Mughal Empire is the end of medieval period in India. Main Empires and Events in Medieval period Rajput Kingdoms – Rajput came for the first time in the 7th century AD. But historians gave different theories of their origin. After the mid-16th century, many Rajput rulers formed close relationships with the Mughal emperors and served them in different capacities. It was due to the support of the Rajputs that Akbar was able to lay the foundations of the Mughal Empire in India. Some Rajput nobles gave away their daughters in marriage to Mughal emperors and princes for political motives.

The central authority of the Delhi sultanate had been fatally weakened by the invasion of the Turkish conqueror Timur and his capture of Delhi in 1398. Khizr Khan, who had been appointed Governor of Lahore, Multan and Dipalpur by Amir Timur, acquired control of Delhi after defeating its de facto ruler Daulat Khan. Taking advantage of the confusion that prevailed in India after the death of the last Tughlaq, Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah, Khizr Khan marched on Delhi, occupied the throne for himself on May 28, 1414 1. 1 Khizr Khan (1414-1421) Khizr Khan laid the foundation of a new dynasty of the Sayyids. • The Delhi Sultans
3 THE DELHI SULTANS n Chapter 2 we saw that regions like the Kaveri delta I became the centre of large kingdoms. Did you notice that there was no mention of a kingdom with Delhi as its capital? That was because Delhi became an important city only in the twelfth century. Take a look at Table 1. Delhi first became the capital of a kingdom under the Tomara Rajputs, who were defeated in the middle of the twelfth century by the Map 1 Chauhans (also referred to as Chahamanas) of Ajmer. Selected Sultanate It was under the Tomaras and Chauhans that Delhi cities of Delhi, thirteenth-fourteenth became an important commercial centre. Many rich centuries. Jaina merchants lived in the city and constructed several temples. Coins minted here, called dehliwal, had a wide circulation. The transformation of Delhi into a capital that controlled vast areas of the subcontinent started with the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate in the beginning of the thirteenth century. Take a look at Table 1 again and identify the five dynasties that together made the Delhi Sultanate. The Delhi Sultans built many cities in the area that we now - know as Delhi. • Lodi Dynasty Who Was the Founder of Lodi Dynasty?
Lodi Dynasty Who was the founder of Lodi Dynasty? Bahlul Lodi (also Bahlol Lodi) was the founder of the Lodi dynasty in India. He served as the Sultan of Delhi between 1451 and 1489. He was a brave soldier and an energetic ruler. Achievements: Soon after his accession to the throne, Bahlul Lodi tried to restore somewhat of the faded splendor of Delhi. • First of all he established peace and order in the areas surrounding Delhi and brought under his control those fief-holders and chieftains who had enjoyed varying degree of autonomy for the last so many years. • Then he waged a continuous war against the Sharqi rulers of Jaunpur, who had become a great danger to the Lodi Empire. He conquered that territory and put it under the charge of his son Barbak Shah. • This success greatly strengthened the position of Bahlul Lodhi. Then several expeditions were sent against the chiefs of Mewat, Kalpi, Sambhal, Koil, Dholpur and Rewari and they offered their submission. • Character: Bahlul Lodhi was a pious and generous ruler who led his life strictly according to the Islamic law. He hated pomp and show and sat with his chiefs on the carpet. Though himself not so learned yet he liked the company of the learned and extended his patronage to them. He was a great lover of justice and took personal interest in redressing the grievances of his subjects. He was very kind to the poor and often distributed huge amounts among them. • Death: Bahlol Lodhi died on 12th of July in 1489 and was succeeded by his son Sikandar Lodhi.

International Journal of Social Science and Economic Research ISSN: 2455-8834 Volume:04, Issue:02 "February 2019" CONFLICT AND CONCORDANCE: A CASE STUDY OF LODIS OF DELHI AND SHARQIS OF JAUNPUR Md. Asfaque Julfikar Junior Research Fellow, CAS, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, U.P., India ABSTRACT In history of the Delhi Sultanate (1206-1526 AD), the invasion of Timur at Delhi in 1398 AD was a high watershed for the disintegration of the Tughlaq authority and the emergence of regional powers in north India. When Timur left India for Samarqand, he appointed Khizr Khan as his deputy in north-western region of India and later he established Sayyid dynasty in 1414 AD at Delhi. But the Sayyid Sultans were politically proved weak and unable to prevent the emergence and consolidation of the provincial dynasties especially the Sharqis of Jaunpur who aspired for the imperial throne of Delhi. After the assassination of Mubarak Shah Sayyid in 1434 AD the Sayyid power became feeble and in desperate need for military support to defend Delhi against the ambitions of Khaljis of Malwa and Sharqis of Jaunpur. In this chaotic historical background of Delhi, Bahlul Lodi, muqta of Sirhind, emerged as a defender of titular Sayyid Sultan Muhammad Shah and saved Delhi against the attack of Khaljis of Malwa in 1440 AD. After this successful defence of the imperial city, confidence of Bahlol Lodi was increased which led him to aspire for the sovereignty and he also invaded Delhi thrice and ultimately successful to establish the first Afghan Empire in India in 1451 AD.

  • Pattern of Afghan Migrations to India During Medieval Period Introduction
International Journal of Research in Economics and Social Sciences (IJRESS) Available online at: http://euroasiapub.org Vol. 7 Issue 2, February- 2017, pp. 137~145 ISSN(o): 2249-7382 | Impact Factor: 6.939 | Thomson Reuters Researcher ID: L-5236-2015 Pattern of Afghan Migrations to India during Medieval period Bilal sheikh Junior Research Fellow (UGC) PhD Research Scholar, CAS, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (U.P.) India. Introduction Before the foundation of the First Afghan Empire in India (1451-1526), numerous Afghans had migrated to India who played a prominent role under Delhi Sultanate. The Afghans entered India during this period in varying numbers and capacities at different times. They came as mercenaries, as warriors under the command of mighty alien captains, or as nobles. Some came to escape hardship and adversity that menaced them in their own land,1 while others were lured by the special patronage available to them in India. Sometimes, the influx of the Afghans into India during the Muslim rule was encouraged by the general expansive wave of Islam to India.2 Keeping this in view, an attempt has been made to survey the pattern of Afghan migrations to India during medieval period. The flow of Afghan emigrants to India in search of new lives and the greater opportunities of Hindustan would, in all probability, have occurred under the Hindu rulers 3 before the foundation of Muslim rule in India; the establishment of the Muslim rule under Delhi Sultans certainly accelerated the process. However, before serving the Delhi sultans Afghans had made an attempt to conquer north-western Indian territory much before the establishment of Muslim rule in India and even before the conquest of Sindh by Mohammad bin Qasim in 712 A.D.

  • Mongol-Afghan Conflict During the Delhi Sultans
Himayatullah Yaqubi1 MONGOL-AFGHAN CONFLICT DURING THE DELHI SULTANS Most of the inquiries produced by historians on medieval and Mughal India usually limited the scope of the Mughal- Afghan conflict only to the period of the Greater Mughals (1526- 1707). In fact, there occurred some major Afghan uprisings during the Mughal era, but one cannot overlook the relationship of Mongols, the predecessors of the Mughals, during the Delhi Sultans. The available literature on the subject revealed an overlapping development of the events occurred in Kabul, the Afghan borderland and the Delhi Sultanate. As the Afghans lay on the main route of the Mongol invaders, therefore their policy and response towards them must be judged to understand its varying dimensions. Both the nations portrayed a tribal, social and political cohesion which made them a little closer with each- others. The paper aims at to discover the activities of the Afghan nobility in India during the Mongol’s Indian invasion. The objective of the study is to discover the changed dynamics of their approach to each-others and to comprehend its relative impact on the then political scene. It would try to explore the real cause of the conflict between the two martial races. The Emergence of Afghan Nobility in India At the dawn of the eleventh century the Afghans were influential and politically strong in eastern Afghanistan, Peshawar, the borderland areas and its suburbs. One Shaikh Hamid Lodhi was a jagirdar (fief-holder) in Laghman and Multan on behalf of a Hindu Raja Jaipal. Raja Jaipal concluded a treaty with him, through which Raja Jaipal conferred his suzerainty on Laghman and the surrounding areas and he, in return, agreed to guard the frontier against the inroads of the Arabs.
