A DNA-based cladistic analysis con- firms that it belongs to the Euptychiina, as sister to Forsterinaria and closely related to Taygetis, Posttaygetis, Parataygetis, Pseudodebis, and Harjesia. Although immature morphology also sug- gests that this species is closely related to Forsterinaria, none of the adult morphological synapo- morphies for the genera in the aforementioned clade occur in E. pronophila, a highly autapomorphic species. Because we were unable to place it with confidence in an established genus, the monotypic satyrine genus Guaianaza Freitas & Peña New Genus is described, with Eup- tychia pronophila Butler as the type species. Introduction The butterfly family Nymphalidae is composed of about 7200 species distributed through- out the world (Ackery et al. 1999). Nymphalid species exhibit a great variety of color pat- terns and morphological features, but are united by the synapomorphy of “tricarinate” antennae (Vane-Wright 2003). -

Ogyris represents one of several Australian endemic butterfly radiations that is well characterised in terms of basic biology but lacking in data useful for discriminating among the potential factors promoting divergence and speciation. A phylogeographic approach was used to document structuring in mitochondrial DNA markers (mtDNA) across the geographic range of two groups of closely related taxa. These include a pair of sister species: Ogyris zosine and O. genoveva, and the polytypic species O. amaryllis which is comprised of four subspecies. Topological relationships among recognised taxonomic units were tested and polyphyletic patterns investigated as a potential source of information relating to divergence and speciation. Sister species Ogyris zosine and O. genoveva were found to exhibit a polyphyletic relationship based on mtDNA. The deepest divergence within the group separated allopatric populations of O. zosine in northern Australia which do not correspond to a recognised taxonomic entity. -

We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. Why do the ithomiines (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae) aggregate? Notes on a butterfly pocket in central Brazil. This study provides information on the species composition and the number of butterflies in different phases of an ithomiine aggregation during the 2004 dry season in central Brazil, and tests some hypotheses concerning the pocket formation. The results obtained suggest that ithomiine pockets constitute primarily an adaptation of butterflies to the adverse climatic conditions of the dry season, such as high temperatures and low air relative humidity, rather than the occurrence of large concentrations of adult food resources (flowers visited for nectar were not found in the pocket site) or defense against visually hunting predators (contrary to the prediction tested, the frequency of butterflies bearing birds beak marks on the wings significantly increased along the period of pocket formation, especially in the case of Mechanitis polymnia, the most abundant species in the pocket). Other hypotheses concerning the pocket formation are also discussed. KEYWORDS. Beak marks; insectivorous birds; ithomiine pockets; Müllerian mimicry. RESUMO. [email protected] ABSTRACT During more than half a century, Luis Peña and later his collaborator Alfredo Ugarte, gathered all known butterfl y data and suspected Chilean specimens to publish their seminal book on the butterfl ies of Chile (Peña and Ugarte 1997). Their work summarized the accumulated knowledge up to the end of the 20th century. Since then much additional work has been done by the authors, resulting in the descriptions of numerous new species as well as establishing new species records for Chile, especially in the families Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae (Satyrinae). The list of these two families is still not com- plete, as several new species will be published soon and will appear in part II of this paper. The present work involving four families updates the Chilean list by: 1) describing one new species of Pieridae, 2) describing one new subspecies of Nymphalidae (Heliconiinae), 3) adding in total 10 species and two subspecies to the Chilean list.
