But yeah, he did, slapping that astral avenger smack dab in the middle of the Forever People. Said quintet of space hippies were the junior partners in Kirby’s Fourth World saga. Published by DC in the early 1970s, it was an epic that sprawled across four titles. In those comics, Kirby’s indefatigable imagination spun off one amazing character after another. The least of these was Forager. Introduced in New Gods #9 June-July 1972 (below) Forager was a Bug. Semi-human insectoids who scavenge a sorry lif from the scraps of New Genesis, home of the New Gods, the Bugs wer Kirby’s way of showing that even Utopia isn’t perfect. Such was the pow- er of the King’s ideas that characters like Bug which failed in their day have led second lives thanks to later generations of fans turned pro. His Ed Piskor is the cartoonist behind the award-winning series Hip Hop Family Tree (available from Northside). The influence of Mar- vel comics always showed in Piskor’s art, but no one knew how intense the connection between the alternative star and the House of Ideas truly was. Piskor learned how to chase down the details of rap history thanks to his life-long immersion in the complicated lore of the X-Men.

In the Southeast region, Mainline Health Systems, Inc. are doing their part by op- erating one day drive through free testing across the region. Area residents in Drew County were offered the chance to be tested Tuesday, May 19, at Pauline Baptist Church. There was no need for a physician referral, test takers did not need to be showing signs or be in a high risk category and the tests were free. According to Mainline CEO Gary Nichols, Mainline is doing their part, with help of grant money received for COVID-19, to make sure residents of ru- ral Southeast Arkansas have the chance to be tested and to help meet the gover- nor’s goal. Those who came through the site on Tuesday stayed in their cars where they were registered and given stickers and testing kits with their information on them. After registering the cars pulled around to another stopping point where nurses swabbed them for their tests. Mainline tested residents of Lake Vil- lage earlier and are adding new sites to ensure as many Arkansans as possible are tested. According to the Center for Disease Control and other health organizations, testing is key to reopening the economy in a safe manner.

Free Supplement THE ISSUE #67A, SPRING 2016 Collector [A message from Charles Hatfield, curator of the CSU Northridge exhibition Comic Book Apocalypse: The Graphic World of Jack Kirby and moderator of the CSUN panel discussion that appeared in The Jack Kirby Collector #67:] Due to editorial mistakes on my part, the version of the panel transcript that ran in the print edition of TJKC #67 was not approved by the other panelists, Scott Bukatman, Doug Harvey, Adam McGovern, Andrei Molotiu, Steve Roden, and Ben Saunders. Further, it contained a number of mistaken names, mis- attributed statements, and mis-heard lines. The responsibility for these errors is mine, and I apolo - gize to my fellow panelists for rushing into print an unapproved and faulty transcript that did not reflect their input. Fortunately, John Morrow has graciously made it pos - sible for us to include this revised, corrected tran - script in the digital edition, and as this free download - able supplement to the issue. • A View to a Kill
Dusseldorp A view to a kill The sophistication of Neanderthal behavioural strategies have been the subject of debate from the moment of their recognition as a separate species of hominin G.L. Dusseldorp in 1856. This book presents a study on Neanderthal foraging prowess. Novel ethnographic and primatological insights, suggest that increasing dependence on high quality foods, such as meat, caused the brain to evolve to a large size and thus led to highly intelligent hominins. From this baseline, the author studies the Neanderthal archaeological record in order to gain insight into the “knowledge-intensity” of Neanderthal hunting behaviour. In this research, an optimal foraging perspective is applied to Pleistocene bone assemblages. According to this perspective, foraging success is an important factor in an individual’s evolutionary fitness. Therefore foraging is organised as efficiently as possible. The prey species that were selected and hunted by Neanderthals are analysed. The author investigates economic considerations that influenced Neanderthal prey choice. These considerations are based on estimates of the population densities of the available prey species and on estimates of the relative difficulty of hunting those species. The results demonstrate that A view to a kill when Neanderthals operated within poor environments, their prey choice was constrained: they were not able to hunt species living in large herds. In these environments, solitary species were the preferred prey. It is striking that Neanderthals successfully focussed on the largest and most dangerous species in poor environments. However, in richer environments, these constraints were lifted and species living in herds were successfully exploited. In order to assess the accuracy of this approach, bone assemblages formed by cave hyenas are also analysed.
