Our aim is to assist writers to improve their craft and thus, in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support, move them closer to achieving their goals. The Community of Writers holds its summer writing workshops in Squaw Valley in a ski lodge at the foot of the ski slopes. She was a college student working with scientist Jane Foster. Another scientist, ForDr. Erik Selvig, sat in the passenger seat. In the back of the van, Jane- opened the roof and climbed onto it. Selvig followed her, and they looked up into the darkness. “So what exactly are we looking for?” Selvig asked. He was a friend of Jane’s father and knew her well. “Why did you ask me to join you here in New Mexico?” “I told youSample. Something strange is happening in the night sky and I need your help,” Jane replied. “It’s a little dierent each time. Once it was a pool of stars in a corner of the sky. But last week it was a rainbow—” A noise from her computer stopped her. “Wait for it!” she said excitedly. Nothing happened. The sky above them stayed calm and black. But yeah, he did, slapping that astral avenger smack dab in the middle of the Forever People. Said quintet of space hippies were the junior partners in Kirby’s Fourth World saga. Published by DC in the early 1970s, it was an epic that sprawled across four titles. In those comics, Kirby’s indefatigable imagination spun off one amazing character after another. The least of these was Forager. Introduced in New Gods #9 June-July 1972 (below) Forager was a Bug. Semi-human insectoids who scavenge a sorry lif from the scraps of New Genesis, home of the New Gods, the Bugs wer Kirby’s way of showing that even Utopia isn’t perfect. Such was the pow- er of the King’s ideas that characters like Bug which failed in their day have led second lives thanks to later generations of fans turned pro. His Ed Piskor is the cartoonist behind the award-winning series Hip Hop Family Tree (available from Northside). The influence of Mar- vel comics always showed in Piskor’s art, but no one knew how intense the connection between the alternative star and the House of Ideas truly was. Piskor learned how to chase down the details of rap history thanks to his life-long immersion in the complicated lore of the X-Men. -

19 NEW MODES OF SELF-FASHIONING THE ZEN MASTER’S COMICS: SELF-AWARENESS AND POPULAR CULTURE IN GLEN DAVID GOLD’S I WILL BE COMPLETE ALEXANDRU BUDAC West University, Timişoara Abstract: Raised in a chic California mansion at the peak of the counterculture movement, novelist Glen David Gold recounts the tormenting relationship with his estranged parents, and especially with his bohemian and deeply troubled mother. When the latter leaves him alone in San Francisco, at the age of twelve, he has to find ways to survive and attend school. I assess how comic books, movies, music, Gold’s passion for the Japanese culture, and his perception of time make for the labyrinthine structure of his memoir. Probably not, but we have found the means to make this need a public – and global – asset. Or at least many people belive it to be so. Technically, in the age of the Internet and social media, everyone’s private life might come under everyone’s scrutiny and it is increasingly difficult to tell the mere online confession from dishonest self-advertising, or truth-telling from malicious fabrications. Assessing the impact of generalized “confessionalism”, as he calls it ironically, on memoir writing – a venerable genre besieged by fraud and commercial success during the last decades – William Giraldi (2018: 99) notices that “social media has turned untold citizens into hourly memoirists in miniature. We live now in a culture of incessant confession and self-discovery: a non-stop spelunking into empty caves.” It comes as no surprise then that professional writers stand up for the memoir as an artistic form and genuine self-examination, rather than self-interest. -

Introduction The superhero is one of modern American culture’s most popular and pervasive myths. Though the primary medium, the comic book, is often derided as juvenile or material fit for illiterates the superhero narrative maintains a persistent presence in popular culture through films, television, posters and other mediums. There is a great power in the myth of the superhero. The question “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” could be answered simply. Wonder Woman matters because she is a member of this pantheon of modern American gods. Wonder Woman, along with her cohorts Batman and Superman represent societal ideals and provide colorful reminders of how powerful these ideals can be.1 This answer is compelling, but it ignores Wonder Woman’s often turbulent publication history. In contrast with titles starring Batman or Superman, Wonder Woman comic books have often sold poorly. Further, Wonder Woman does not have quite the presence that Batman and Superman both share in popular culture.2 Any other character under similar circumstances—poor sales, lack of direction and near constant revisions—would have been killed off or quietly faded into the background. Yet, Wonder Woman continues to persist as an important figure both within her comic universe and in our popular consciousness. “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” To answer this question an understanding of the superhero and their primary medium, the comic book, is required, Wonder Woman is a comic book character, and her existence in the popular consciousness largely depends on how she is presented within the conventions of the comic book superhero narrative. -
