LOCAL STUDENTS GRADUATES FROM UM LAW SCHOOL

MISSOULA —

Todd Robert Hillier of Spokane was one of about 80 students

who graduated June 11 from the University of Montana School of

Law.

Hillier won the 1988 Phi Delta Phi Outstanding Student

Award. He is the son of James and Lois Morrison of Spokane and

Tom and Elizabeth Hillier of Missoula.

Hillier graduated from West Valley High School in 1980 and

earned a bachelor's degree in political science from UM in 1984.

He is a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.

He plans to practice law in the Northwest and to specialize

in litigation, possibly with an insurance company.

LOCAL STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM UM LAW SCHOOL

MISSOULA —

Michael Aaron and Elizabeth Rogers, both of Alberton, were

among about 80 students who graduated June 11 from the University

of Montana School of Law.

Aaron earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1933 from

Southeastern College in Lakeland, Fla.

Rogers is a 1984 economics graduate of New Mexico State

University in Las Cruces.

Gail Hammer of Sidney has graduated with honors from the

University of Montana School of Law.

One of about 80 law students who graduated June 11, she is

the daughter of Robert J. and Carol Hammer. She graduated in

1971 from Sidney Senior High School and in 1978 earned a

bachelor's degree in sociology from UM.

Hammer was a member of the Women's Law Caucus, the National

Lawyers Guild and the American Trial Lawyers Association. She

plans to specialize in poverty law, women's issues and

constitutional law.

MISSOULA —

Seven students from Great Falls and one from Black Eagle

have graduated from the University of Montana School of Law.

The Great Falls law graduates are John Bulger, Kraig Kazda,

Lisalyn Lovell, Jim Lumsden, Robert Pfennigs, Gregg Smith and

Susan Weber. The Black Eagle law graduate is Melody Brown.

Bulger is a 1984 UM graduate in journalism. Kazda graduated

with high honors from the law school. He is a 1979 graduate of

the College of Great Falls with a bachelor's degree in sociology.

Lovell, who received the American Judicature Society Service:

Award for 1988, is a 1981 graduate of C.M. Russell High School.

In 1985 she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and

history from UM. In law school she was president of the Student

Lawyers Association. She will be a law clerk for Montana

Supreme Court Chief Justice Turnage for one year and then plans

to enter private practice as a trial lawyer. Her parents are the

honorable Charles and Maxine Lovell of Helena.

Lumsden earned a bachelor's degree in government and public

administration from Evangel College in Springfield, Mo., in 1983.

Pfennigs, a 1980 forestry graduate from UM, graduated with high honors from the law school.

Smith, who graduated with honors, is a 1981 graduate of

C.M. Russell High School and a 1985 UM graduate with a bachelor’s

degree in accounting. As a law student he participated in the

Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program. He will enter law

practice as an associate attorney with the Smith, Walsh, Clarke

and Gregoire law firm in Great Falls. His parents are Marvin and Elaine Smith.

Weber is a 1980 graduate of C.M. Russell High School and a

1985 UM graduate with a bachelor's degree in political science

and history. She is a member of the American Bar Association --

Law Student Division and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. The

daughter of Janet and Elmer Bortnem, she will enter law as an

associate with the Miller and Cook law firm in Great Falls.

LOCAL STUDENT GRADUATES FROM UM LAW SCHOOL

MISSOULA —

Marcelle Compton Quist of Manhattan is one of about 80 law

students who graduated June 11 from the University of Montana

School of Law.

Quist won a 1988 John P. Archer Memorial Award. She

graduated in 1972 from Seward Park High School and in 1976 earned

a bachelor of science degree in animal science from the

University of California at Davis.

She was a member of UM's Student Bar Association, the

American Trial Lawyers Association, the American Agricultural Law

Association and the Women's Law Caucus. She co-authored an

issue of the Montana Law Review dealing with the Montana Close

Corporation Act. In 1986 she held the $1,000 Alpha Phi Graduate Scholarship.

Quist plans to become district court clerk for Judge Tom Olsen in Bozeman.

Five University of Montana students from Butte have

graduated from the UM School of Law.

They are: Bernard Cassidy, a 1974 UM graduate; John

Johnston, a 1985 Western Montana College graduate; Eileen Joyce,

a 1985 UM graduate; William Joyce, a 1985 UM graduate and Terry

John MacDonald, a 1984 UM graduate.

Cassidy earned his bachelor's degree in history and

political science from UM in 1974.

Johnston, a 1980 graduate of Butte Central High School,

graduated with honors from UM's law school. The son of Mr. and

Mrs. John F. Johnston, he plans to join the law firm of Corette, Smith, Pohlman and Allen.

Thomas and Dorothy Joyce are the parents of Eileen and

William Joyce. Eileen graduated with honors from the law school.

She is a 1980 graduate of Butte Central High School holds a

bachelor's degree in business administration. William, a 1981

graduate of Butte Central High School, earned his bachelor's

degree in economics. He was voted Outstanding Law Student by

the Montana Student Bar Association, and he plans to practice law in Butte.

MacDonald, a 1980 graduate of Butte High School, graduated with high honors in business finance and graduated with honors in law. The son of Fraser and Charlotte MacDonald, he plans to enter law as an associate with the Garlington, Lohn and Robinson law firm in Missoula.

Sydney McKenna-Oldenburg of Lewistown has graduated from the

University of Montana School of Law.

One of about 80 law students who graduated June 11, she won

a 1988 American Judicature Society Service Award.

McKenna-Oldenburg is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle

McKenna. She graduated in 1981 from Fergus High School and in

1985 earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education from UM.

McKenna-Oldenburg was the executive officer of the UM's

Student Bar Association and a member of the American Trial

Lawyers Association. She will go into private practice as a

general practitioner.

Eight of the 80 students who graduate June 11 from the

University of Montana School of Law were from Billings.

The law school graduates are Deborah Anspach, Susan Dunn,

Carolyn Ennis, Shelley Gordon, Ingrid Gustafson, Dale Robbins,

James Swenson and Regan Whitworth.

Anspach earned a bachelor's degree in English from Eastern New Mexico University in 1973.

Dunn, the daughter of Carl G. and Eldora Klein, is a 1976

graduate of Billings West High School. A 1980 graduate of

Eastern Montana College, Dunn holds a bachelor's degree in

English. She plans to enter private practice in Montana.

Ennis will be an associate of McNamer & Thompson law firm in

Billings. She has been on the board of directors for the Alberta

Bair Theatre Corp. and chair of the Montana Cultural Advisory Council.

Gordon, a 1981 graduate of Billings Senior High School,

earned a bachelor's degree in English from Gonzaga University in

Spokane in 1985. The daughter of Alice E. Gordon, she received

the American Jurisprudence Award for Professional Responsibility

and served as an intern for the Department of Revenue's Child

Support Enforcement Bureau and also for the Montana Defender

Project.

Gustafson, who graduated with honors, is a 1979 graduate of

Billings West High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business and commerce from in 1983. She is the daughter of Monty and Gayle Gustafson and plans to practice law in the Northwest.

Robbins, a 1976 graduate of Billings Senior High School, holds a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration from UM. He is also a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, American Bar Association and the Christian

Legal Society. He has been a teaching assistant in UM's business and law schools. The son of Mr. and Mrs. G.D. Robbins, he plans to be a law clerk for U.S. Magistrate Jack D. Shanstrom in

Billings.

Swenson earned a bachelor's degree in economics from

Stanford University in 1971.

Whitworth graduated with honors. He is a 1971 graduate of

Eastern Montana College and holds a bachelor's degree in history.

Charles Frederick Unmack of Lakewood has graduated with

honors from the University of Montana School of Law.

One of 79 law students who graduated June 11, he won the

Edward A. Cremer III Environmental Law Award and a 1988 American

Judicature Society Service Award.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis L. Unmack of Yucaipa,

Calif. He graduated in 1973 from Lakewood High School and in

1979 earned a bachelor's degree in natural resources from the

University of California at Berkeley.

At UM Unmack served as editor of the Public Land Law Review.

He plans to practice natural resource law.

Three University of Montana students from Stanford have

graduated from the UM School of Law.

They are: William Hammer, a 1981 Montana State University

graduate; James Hubble, a 1964 graduate of The Citadel, the

Military College of South Carolina and Michael John Ridgeway, a

1985 MSU graduate.

Hammer, a 1976 graduate of Stanford High School, earned his

bachelor’s degree at MSU and graduated with honors from UM's law

school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. William Hammer.

Hubble, who earned his bachelor's degree in history,

graduated with high honors from the law school. He is a 1988

recipient of the American Judicature Society Service Award and

the Scribes Award. He has been the editor of the Montana Law

Review and belongs to the Association of Trial Lawyers of

America. The son of Mrs. R.A. Hubble, he plans to join the law

firm of John Christensen in Stanford.

Ridgeway, a 1980 graduate of Stanford High School, earned

his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics and graduated

with high honors from UM's law school. The son of John and Emma

Four University of Montana students from Helena have

graduated from the UM School of Law.

The law graduates are: Ann Brodsky, Allen Lanning, Michael

Rapkoch and Martha Sheehy.

Brodsky, who graduated with high honors, received the 1988

American Judicature Society Service Award, the Order of

Barristers Award and the Weymouth D. Symmes Award. She

is a 1977 graduate of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.

She has been a member of the Women's Law Caucus and the regional moot court team.

Lanning earned a bachelor's degree in politics and public

affairs from the University of Miami in 1985.

Rapkoch graduated with high honors and won the 1988

International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award and the Order of the

Barristers Award. He is a 1982 graduate of Carroll College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy.

Sheehy also graduated with high honors and received the 1988

American Judicature Society Service Award, the Bancroft-Whitney

Award, Order of Barristers Award, Outstanding Law Student Award,

and the West Publishing Company Award. She earned a bachelor's

LOCAL STUDENT GRADUATES FROM UM LAW SCHOOL

MISSOULA —

Janet Lee Freeman of Hardin has graduated from the

University of Montana School of Law.

One of about 80 law students who graduated June 11, she is

the daughter of Doug and Gladys Freeman. She graduated in 1981

from Hardin Senior High School and in 1985 earned a bachelor's

degree in business administration from UM.

Freeman was a member of the American Trial Lawyers

Association. She served on the youth services committee of the

Montana Board of Crime Control and as an intern for the Missoula

County Attorney. In October she'll begin working as a trial

attorney with the Criminal Section of the Tax Division of the

U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Robert McAnally and Rene Albert Martell, both of Poplar,

were among about 80 students who graduated June 11 from the

University of Montana School of Law.

Martell is a 1988 recipient of the American Judicature

Society Service Award. He is a 1970 graduate of the University

of San Francisco with a bachelor's degree in production

management. He also earned a master's degree in counseling from

the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1974.

McAnally graduated in 1967 from Poplar High School and in

1979 graduated from Antioch College in Ohio with a degree in

communication development.

McAnally, who received the Bureau of National Affairs Award,

was a member of the Indian Law Clinic and held a scholarship from

American Indian Scholarships Inc. of Albuquergue, N.M. He plans

to enter private practice in Montana, focusing on Indian and

federal law, natural resources law and civil litigations.

He is the son of William and Irene Watt and a graduate of

Hardin High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from UM in 1975.

Nancy C. Ivarinen of White Bear Lake was one of about 80

students who graduated June 11 from the University of Montana School of Law.

Ivarinen won a 1988 American Judicature Society Service

Award. She is the daughter of Henry and Ladonnah Ivarinen of

Pequot Lakes, Minn. She graduated in 1972 from White Bear Lake

^-^-Uh School and in 1976 earned a bachelor's degree in physical

education from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn.

Ivarinen was president of the Women's Law Caucus and a

member of the National Lawyers Guild and the American Trial

Lawyers Association. She held an Erasmus Scholarship at UM.

Ivarinen will specialize in poverty law and women's issues.

She will begin working with Idaho Legal Aid Services in

Pocatello, Idaho, on July 1.

University of Montana School of Law.

One of about 80 law students who graduated June 11, he is

the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barnes of Clarkston, Wash. He

graduated in 1970 from Clarkston High School and in 1975 earned a

bachelor's degree in mathematics from Washington State

University.

He was treasurer of UM's Student Bar Association and held

the Sullivan Dean Roberts Scholarship and the Finlen Memorial Law

Scholarship. He plans to enter general practice in Libby.

Andrew P. Suenram of Kelseyville has graduated from the University of Montana School of Law.

One of 79 law students who graduated June 11, he is the son

of Beverly Suenram. He graduated in 1979 from Kelseyville High

School and earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the

University of California at Santa Cruz in 1984.

He plans to enter practice as an associate with the Max A. Hansen Law Firm in Dillon, Mont.

Deborah Kim Christopher Belden of Poison has graduated from

the University of Montana School of Law.

One of about 80 law students who graduated June 11, she is

the daughter of Richard and Corinne Christopher. She graduated

in 1978 from Poison High School and in 1982 earned a bachelor's

degree in liberal arts from UM.

Belden was a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity at UM

and worked in ASUM's Legal Services. She was UM's 1981

Homecoming Queen and was Montana's woman powerlifting champion in 1988.

Lisa Hudson of Lynnwood graduated with honors from the

University of Montana School of Law.

Hudson, who won a 1988 Order of Barristers Award, was one of

about 80 students who graduated June 11.

She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Eastern

Montana College in 1985.

MISSOULA —

One student from Bonner and 12 students from Missoula have

graduated from the University of Montana School of Law.

The Bonner law graduate is Katherine Donnelley, who

graduated with high honors. The Missoula law graduates are:

Kelly Beard, Kerry Delaney, Debbie Waltari, Amy Guth, Gail

Haviland, Sharon Hester, Charles Jordan, Mike Magone, Andrea

Olsen, Jean Ross, Marcus Smith, Michael Stehle and Terry Wolfe.

Beard graduated with honors from the law school. She is a

1975 graduate of Cascade High School and graduated magna cum

laude with a bachelor's degree in music from the College of Great

Falls in 1980. She won a 1988 Order of Barristers Award and the

Weymouth D. Symmes Award. As a law student she was the

legislative chair of the Womem's Law Caucus. She also

Par^-^c-'-Patsd in the American Trial Lawyers Association and Moot

Court competitions. She plans to work in the litigation

department of the Crowley, Haughey, Hansen, Dietrich and Toole law firm in Billings.

Delaney, a 1981 graduate of Loyola-Sacred Heart High School,

earned a bachelor's degree in political science from UM in 1985.

She has been a student representative to the American Bar

Association as well as law school committees. she is also a member of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity and the Student Bar

Association. Her parents are Dexter and Tink Delaney.

Waltari is a 1977 graduate of Great Falls High School and a

1981 UM graduate in resource conservation. She has directed the law school's Volunteer Tax Assistance Program and is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association. She is the daughter of

Jeanette Waltari of Great Falls.

Guth won the 1988 John P. Archer Memorial Award. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Montana State

University in 1985.

Haviland graduated with honors and is the 1988 recipient on the Norman Hanson Legal Writing Award. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1975 from UM.

Hester, who graduated with honors, won the 1988 Phi Delta

Phi Outstanding Student Award and the American Judicature Society

Service Award. She is a 1970 graduate from Abilene Christian

University, Abilene, Texas, with a degree in modern languages.

Jordan, who graduated with honors, won the 1988 Emmett C.

Angland Memorial Award. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1978.

Magone graduated from the law school with honors and received a 1988 American Judicature Society Service Award. He graduated from UM in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in English.

Olsen earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from UM in

Ross, a 1985 history graduate from Eastern Montana College, graduated with honors from the UM law school.

In 1982 Smith earned a bachelor's degree in history and government from Beloit College in Beloit, Wis.

Stehle graduated with high honors and received a 1988 Order of the Barristers Award. He graduated from MSU in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and religion.

Wolfe graduated with honors and won the 1988 James H.

Kilbourne Memorial Award. He is a 1979 graduate of UM with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Linda Murray Trueb of Hayfork was one of about 80 students

who graudated June 11 from the University of Montana School of

Law.

Trueb graduated with honors and received the Norman Hanson

Legal Writing Award. She is the daughter of Dick and Mary

Murray. She graduated from Hayfork High School in 1977 and

earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of

Massachusetts in 1984.

As a law student she served on the editorial board of the

Montana Law Review and was a member of the Student Bar

Association. She was also a teaching assistant for UM's Legal

Robert J. McCarthy and Patrick W. Mehrens of Anaconda were

among about 80 law students who graduated June 11 from the

University of Montana School of Law.

McCarthy earned a bachelor’s degree from Carroll College in

Helena in 1976 and graduated with honors from the law school.

Mehrens, a son of John "Sandy" Mehrens and Helen Torgerson,

is a 1970 graduate of Anaconda Central High School. In 1974 he

earned his bachelor's degree in English from UM.

Mehrens had the Thomas E. Mulroney Scholarship and was a

member of UM's Student Bar Association, the Association of Trial

Lawyers of America and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association. He

plans to enter private or governmental practice in Montana.
