Niepodleglosci 22, 02-653 Warsaw, Poland 2Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of History, University of Warsaw, Zurawia˙ 4, 00-503 Warsaw, Poland Abstract: This paper scrutinises the relations between different models of family planning advice and their evolution in Poland between the mid-1950s and the late 1980s, focusing on their similarities and dissimilarities, conflicts and concordances. From 1956 onwards, the delivery of family planning advice became a priority for both the Polish Catholic Church and the party-state, especially its health authorities, which supported the foundation of the Society of Conscious Motherhood and aspired to mainstream birth control advice through the network of public well-woman clinics. As a consequence, two systems of family planning counselling emerged: the professional, secular family planning movement and Catholic pre-marital and marital counselling. We argue that reciprocal influence and emulation existed between state-sponsored and Catholic family planning in state-socialist Poland, and that both models used transnational organisations and debates relating to contraception for their construction and legitimisation. By evaluating the extent to which the strategies and practices for the delivery of birth control advice utilised by transnational birth control movements were employed in a ‘second world’ context such as Poland, we reveal unexpected supranational links that complicate and problematise historiographical and popular understandings of the Iron Curtain and Cold War Europe.

  • The Holocaust (Shoah) (1939-1945)
The Holocaust (Shoah) (1939-1945) This essay is not meant to be comprehensive. Rather, this is a narrative summary of my presentation. Holocaust historian Karl Schleunes wrote about the “Twisted Road to Auschwitz” that explored how the Nazis ended up building camps of mass murder. It is a useful description as it allows us to blend together some of the myriad forces acting together to create a “perfect storm.” As survivor Emil Fackenheim writes, “The murder camp was not an accidental by-product of the Nazi empire. It was its essence.” Nazi Germany was on a trajectory of mass murder and atrocity from its onset. The unfolding of genocides in Europe is a complex phenomenon, but for our purposes we will focus on: Nazi “ideology” and the bureaucratic, competitive, feudal nature of the Nazi state; process and innovation; Hitler’s function as leader and individual initiatives of “working towards the Führer”; the influence of the unfolding wartime situation; and the influence of location, specifically Eastern Europe. Ideology is not something that can be imposed “from the top.” Rather, ideology is a packaged expression of cultural symbols, desires, and perspectives that “make sense” to a public at large. Holocaust historian Doris Bergen sums up Nazi ideology with the phrase, “Race and Space.” Nazism was rooted in racial theory that had become popular within professional circles by the turn of the twentieth century. For the Nazis, “racial” survivor was predicated on a social Darwinist view of natural competition and survival. Not only was it necessary to weed out “threatening” gene pools from the “Aryan” it was also necessary for the “Aryan” to find living space or lebensraum.

After almost a millennium of Jewish presence in the area, despite wars and the Holocaust, 31 buildings or the ruins of former synagogues have remained until the present. It can be claimed that a Jewish cultural heritage of considerable value has survived in the Podkarpacie region to this day, and therefore requires protection and revalorisation. The paper presents the state of research in this area and an outline of the Jewish history of Podkarpacie, as well as a preliminary description of the preserved synagogues with regards to their origin, functional layout and state of preservation. Keywords: Podkarpacie region, synagogues, history, state of preservation Streszczenie Niniejszy artykuł jest prolegomeną do badań nad historią, architekturą oraz stanem zachowania istniejących jeszcze na terenie Podkarpacia synagog.

  • Movement Or Stabilization? the Upper San River Basin in the Second Half of the 1St Millennium BC
ACTA ARCHAEOLOGICA CARPATHICA VOL. LIV (2019): 25–56 PL ISSN 0001-5229 DOI 10.4467/00015229AAC.19.003.11880 TOMASZ BOCHNAK Movement or stabilization? The Upper San River basin in the second half of the 1st millennium BC Abstract: The ‘Celtic episode’ of the prehistoric Sanok region should be associated with a group of colonists from the south who, during phase LT C, used the local brine springs to produce salt and supply it to the population of the Upper Tisa River basin. For now, no finds definitely associated with phases LT B or LT D have been discovered in the region. The settlers probably relied on both agriculture and animal husbandry to sustain their communities. It seems unlikely they were able to produce any food surpluses, considering the unfavourable climate and poor soil conditions. When the expansion of Dacian tribes to the south of the Carpathians began to cause shifts in the political landscape and the trade routes’ network, the San River Valley cultural centre lost its economic significance and entered a period of decline. Presumably, some of the population may have migrated north into the more fertile lands, while others might have returned to the areas of their origin. According to the available data, there seems to be no clear continuity between the La Tène occupation and the oldest Przeworsk culture finds dated to the end of the early pre-Roman period. Keywords: La Tène culture, celtic culture, middle La Tène, San basin, brine springs I. INTRODUCTION During the Iron Age, the drainage basin of the river San became the arena of important cultural change.

The objective required finding and determining the following: (1) factors in the establishment of shrines in Poland during this time; (2) factors in the development of shrines with reference to the transformation of religious worship and to the influence of political factors in Poland; (3) changes in pilgrimage traditions in Poland, and (4) changes in the number of pilgrimages to selected shrines. These changes were determined by archive and library research. Additionally, field studies were performed at more than 300 shrines, including observations and in-depth interviews with custodians. Descriptive–analytical, dynamic–comparative and cartographic presentation methods were used to analyze results.
