Footprint Ecology / CCW. 1 Summary It is increasingly recognised that recreational access to the countryside has a wide range of benefits, such as positive effects on health and well-being, economic benefits and an enhanced understanding of and connection with the natural environment. There are also negative effects of access, however, as people’s presence in the countryside can impact on the nature conservation interest of sites. This report reviews these potential impacts to the Welsh countryside, and we go on to discuss how such impacts could be mapped across the entirety of Wales. Such a map (or series of maps) would provide a tool for policy makers, planners and access managers, highlighting areas of the countryside particularly sensitive to access and potentially guiding the location and provision of access infrastructure, housing etc. We structure the review according to four main types of impacts: contamination, damage, fire and disturbance. Contamination includes impacts such as litter, nutrient enrichment and the spread of exotic species. Within the section on damage we consider harvesting and the impacts of footfall on vegetation and erosion of substrates. The fire section addresses the impacts of fire (accidental or arson) on animals, plant communities and the soil. Disturbance is typically the unintentional consequences of people’s presence, sometimes leading to animals avoiding particular areas and impacts on breeding success, survival etc. We review the effects of disturbance to mammals, birds, herptiles and invertebrates and also consider direct mortality, for example trampling of nests or deliberate killing of reptiles.

    HACQUETIA 12/2 • 2013, 95–185 DOI: 10.2478/HACQ-2013-0012 FOREST AND SCRUB COMMUNITIES WITH GREEN ALDER (ALNUS VIRIDIS) IN SLOVENIA Igor DAKSKOBLER1,2, Andrej ROZMAN2 & Andrej SELIŠKAR3 Abstract This paper provides phytosociological tables that describe scrub and forest communities with Alnus viridis in the Slovenian Alps. We described three new associations: Rhododendro hirsuti-Alnetum viridis (a green alder community on calcareous bedrock in the Eastern and Southeastern Alps), Huperzio selagi-Alnetum viridis (a green alder community in the silicate rocks under Mt. Komen in the eastern Savinja Alps) and Alno viridis- Sorbetum aucupariae (a successional stage of mountain ash and green alder on potential beech sites in the foot- hills of the southern Julian Alps; similar stages are known also elsewhere in the Alps), and presented additional three associations (Polysticho lonchitis-Fagetum, Rhodothamno-Laricetum and Rhododendro hirsuti-Pinetum mugo) whose stands comprise green alder. Izvleček V članku s fitocenološkimi tabelami opisujemo grmiščne in gozdne združbe, v katerih v slovenskih Alpah uspeva vrsta Alnus viridis. Opisali smo tri nove asociacije: Rhododendro hirsuti-Alnetum viridis (združba zelene je- lše na karbonatni podlagi v vzhodnih in jugovzhodnih Alpah), Huperzio selagi-Alnetum viridis (združba zelene jelše v silikatnem skalovju pod goro Komen v vzhodnih Savinjskih Alpah) ter Alno viridis-Sorbetum aucupariae (sukcesijski stadij jerebike in zelene jelše na potencialno bukovih rastiščih v prigorju južnih Julijskih Alp, po- dobne stadije poznajo tudi drugod v Alpah) ter predstavili še tri druge asociacije (Polysticho lonchitis-Fagetum, Rhodothamno-Laricetum in Rhododendro hirsuti-Pinetum mugo), v čigar sestojih uspeva zelena jelša.

ČRNA PRST AND POREZEN) Igor DAKSKOBLER*, Wilfried ROBERT FRANZ** & Gabrijel SELJAK*** Izvleček Po standardni srednjeevropski metodi (Braun-Blanquet 1964) smo v južnih Julijskih Alpah (Črna prst, Kobla, Slatnik, Porezen) preučili rastlinske združbe na nekdanjih subalpinskih senožetih in pašnikih, v katerih uspe- va vrsta Eryngium alpinum. Njihovo vrstno sestavo smo primerjali z vrstno sestavo podobnih združb visokih ste- blik in subalpinskih travišč drugod v Alpah (Aichinger 1933, Braun-Blanquet 1969, 1976, Béguin 1972, Sutter 1978, Gehu-Franck & al. 1984, Franz 2004 mscr.) in v Dinarskem gorstvu (Horvat 1930, 1962, Fukarek 1957, Horvat & al. 1974). Na podlagi te primerjave večino sestojev z vrsto Eryngium alpinum v južnih Julijskih Alpah uvrščamo v naslednje sintaksone: Carici ferrugineae-Eryngietum alpinae Seljak ex Dakskobler, Franz & Seljak 2005 ass. nova (zveza Caricion ferrugineae in razred Elyno-Seslerietea), Allio victorialis-Eryngietum alpinae Franz (1997) 2004 mscr. var. Serratula macrocephala prov. (zveza Adenostylion alliariae in razred Mulgedio-Aconitetea) in Salice- tum waldsteinianae Beger 1922 corr. Zupančič & Žagar 2001 var. geogr. Homogyne sylvestris Zupančič & Žagar 2001 (zveza Alnion viridis in razred Mulgedio-Aconitetea). Abstract Applying the standard Central-European method (Braun-Blanquet 1964) we studied the plant communities on former subalpine hay-fields and meadows with Eryngium alpinum in the southern Julian Alps (Mts. Chaetospora is lectotypified on C. curvifolia R.Br. A new combination, Chaetospora subbulbosa (Benth.) K.L.Wilson & R.L.Barrett, is made for Schoenus subbulbosus Benth. Lectotypes are selected for Chaetospora aurata Nees, Chaetospora curvifolia R.Br., Chaetospora turbinata R.Br., Elynanthus capitatus Nees, Schoenus subbulbosus Benth., Schoenus subg. Pseudomesomelaena Kük. and Schoenus sect. Sphaerocephali Benth. Two species are endemic to south-western Australia, while the third is endemic to south-eastern Australia. Full descriptions, illustrations and a key to species are provided. All species have anatomy indicative of C3 photosynthesis. Introduction Chaetospora R.Br. is here reinstated as a segregate from Schoenus L., with a novel circumscription.
