Results of botanical survey of translocated Phase 3.1 material July 2018 Bioscan UK Limited E1297R5 3 Long Drowpits Inert Landfill: Revised Phase 2 and 3 Restoration and Mitigation Strategy to accompany extension of time application 1 BACKGROUND 1.1 Planning context 1.1.1 Barton Plant operate an inert landfill facility at the Boughton Estate, near Kettering, Northamptonshire (approximate site centre SP878814) pursuant to planning permissions 12/00068/WASVOC, 08/00081/WAS and 08/00082/WAS. 1.1.2 The permissions cover the linked infilling and restoration of a worked out ironstone gullet partially restored in the past to a shallow east-west type valley landform. The concave void space created is being infilled with inert materials and restored to convex profile, working from west to east. Phase 1 was completed previously and is not relevant to the current permissions. Final restoration of the infilled Phase 2 area is being achieved in stages using materials derived from advance preparation of the westernmost Phase 3 extension (Phase 3.1) prior to landfilling there. The extent of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 areas of the site is shown at Figure 1. 1.1.3 In 2010, an Ecological Management Plan (EMP) was submitted to the Waste Planning Authority pursuant to condition 13 of permission 08/00082/WAS, and subsequently approved. The EMP covered restoration and mitigation requirements for both the Phase 2 and Phase 3 areas. It also set out strategies to mitigate for possible effects on protected great crested newts and common reptile species (principally common lizard). These measures were subsequently put into practice over the course of 2012 and since. The works in respect of great crested newts, and the ongoing measures to prevent them coming into conflict with the operational activities, have been carried out under the terms of a derogation licence number EPSM 2011-3359(D) issued by Natural England, and subsequent versions of this licence (current ref 2017-32664-EPS-MIT). Exclusion fencing maintains the Phase 2 and Phase 3 areas clear of any constraint imposed by these protected species. 1.1.4 In 2013 and 2014, revisions to the EMP were submitted to and ultimately approved by the Waste Planning Authority (WPA) to address changes brought about by the slowing of landfilling operations during the economic downturn and the resultant need to extend the timetable for completion of restoration. 1.1.5 Progress on infilling and restoration has continued to be retarded by ongoing economic factors and a further application is therefore being made to vary the conditions pertaining to timescales for completion of restoration of Phases 2 and 3 and specifically to extend the end date from December 2019 to the end of 2024. 1.1.6 Northants County Council, as Waste Planning Authority, have requested that a revised EMP be submitted with the application to reflect this change in timescale, and also to reflect the position on the ground viz a viz progress on restoration to date. Le raccolte hanno preso in considerazione la maggior parte dei taxa superiori di Invertebrati, ma i risultati, qui sinteticamente riportati, sono limitati all’entomofauna: Mantodea, Orthoptera, Hemiptera Heteroptera, Coleoptera, per un totale di 355 specie. Dal punto di vista faunistico, risultano inedite per il Gran Sasso 26 entità, di cui una nuova per l’Italia, 8 per l’Appennino, 19 per l’Abruzzo. Concludono il lavoro brevi note su alcune specie molto peculiari e l’analisi del popolamento com- plessivo e stazionale, nella quale vengono rimarcate le tre componenti ecologiche più significative rilevate: la compo- nente steppica, la componente termofila e la componente silvicola. SUMMARY - Steppic areas of southern Gran Sasso slopes: account on some entomological orders - The Gran Sasso massif has been investigated more from a geological and botanic than zoological point of view. Invertebrates and some Insect orders (Orthoptera, Macrolepidoptera, Hemiptera Heteroptera, Coleoptera) are quite known, but no studies were carried out on entomological fauna of the xeric southern slopes (from Barisciano to Forca di Penne).

However when large populations of a single species spread over a wide area, choking out and replacing the pasture grasses that provide nutrition to livestock, weeds become an economic issue. Many of the plants that are considered weeds in Canada were accidentally or misguidedly introduced into North America from other parts of the world. For example, purple loosestrife, which invades wetlands and ditches and out-competes and replaces native plants, was introduced into eastern Canada and the United States in the 1800s for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Bindweed, native to Eurasia, was also sold as an ornamental plant in the 1800s. Other plants, such as bull thistle, were likely introduced by seeds stuck to European settler’s belongings. In their native lands, insect pests evolved with these plants, thus helping keep them in check. When the plants are introduced in parts of the world where their insect pests don’t exist, they often spread more rapidly than in their native habitat. As early as the 1920s, scientists began studying insect pests as a means to control the spread of non-native weeds.

SPECIES CHARACTER DESCRIPTION Although usually described as a biennial, teasel is perhaps more appropriately described as a monocarpic (plant that bears fruit once and dies) perennial. The plant grows as a basal rosette for a minimum of one year (this rosette period frequently is longer) then sends up a tall flowering stalk and dies after flowering and seed production. The period of time in the rosette stage apparently varies depending on the amount of time needed to acquire enough resources for flowering to occur. During the rosette stage, leaves vary from somewhat ovoid in young plants to large and oblong leaves that are quite hairy in older rosettes. During the rosette phase teasel develops a large tap root. The tap root may be more than 2 feet (0.6 m) in length and 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter at the crown. Cut-leaved teasel blooms from July through September. Common teasel blooms from June through October. Flowering plants have large, oblong, opposite, sessile leaves that form cups (the cups may hold water) and are prickly, especially on the lower midrib. Stems also are prickly. Teasel's unique inflorescence makes the plant readily identifiable when blooming. Flowers are small and packed into dense oval heads. The heads (inflorescences) are subtended by upcurved bracts and are located terminally on the flowering stems. Cut-leaved teasel usually has white flowers, while common teasel usually has purple flowers. Flowering stems are hollow, have spines on the ridges along the entire length of the stems, and may reach 6-7 feet (1.8-2.1 meters) in height.

Alena Bučánková 2 Biologie, vývoj a zoogeografie vybraných saproxylických skupin orientálních druhů čeledi Stratiomyidae Abstrakt Je popsána morfologie, biologie a zoogeografie larev čtyř druhů z čeledi Stratiomyidae. Dva z nich, Pegadomyia pruinosa a Craspedometopon sp. n., patří do podčeledi Pachygasterinae, další dva, Adoxomyia bistriata a Cyphomyia bicarinata , patří do podčeledi Clitellariinae. Larvy byly sbírány Dr. D. Kovacem pod kůrou padlých stromů v Malysii a Thajsku. Saproxylický způsob života larev v rámci celé čeledi je zde diskutován jako původní stav. Byly vytypovány morfologické a biologické znaky larev s možným fylogenetickým významem a jejich platnost byla vyzkoušena v kladistických programech Nona a Winclada. Zjištěný fylogenetický vztah hlavních podčeledí odpovídá v podstatě současnému systému čeledi. Překážkou detailnímu vyhodnocení jsou zatím jen nedostatečné popisy larev a jejich malá znalost, zvláště v tropických oblastech. Biology, development and zoogeography of some saproxylic Oriental species of Stratiomyidae (Diptera) Abstract The morphology, biology and zoogeography of four larvae of Stratiomyidae are described. Two of them, Pegadomyia pruinosa , Craspedometopon sp. n. belong to the subfamily Pachygasteinae, the others, Adoxomyia bistriata and Cyphomyia bicarinata are placed to the subfamily Clitellariinae. The larvae were collected under the bark of fallen trees in Malaysia and Thailand by Dr. D. Kovac. The saproxylic habitat of stratiomyid larvae is discussed in this thesis as an original state. The morphological and biological characters of possible phylogenetic significance are evaluated and their value was verified with use of Nona and Winclada programs.

This article deals with the Agathidium vaderi beetle named in 2005 by Kelly B. Miller and Quentin D. Wheeler after the fictional character Darth Vader due to the postulated similarity of the beetle's head with Darth Vader's helmet which is ultimately based on Japanese Samurai helmet designs. A. dichotoma bildet im Land der aufgehenden Sonne einen fest verankerten Bestandteil der Populärkultur und man lässt dort Männchen dieser Spezies gegeneinander kämpfen. In den Wettbewerben geht es darum, wessen Käfer die schwerste Last ziehen kann und um Spiele, bei denen man die Käfermännchen dazu bringt um ein Stück Wassermelone zu kämpfen (LAURENT 2001: 70) – somit "eine Insekten- version des Sumo-Ringens" (HERZOG 2012: 57).
