• Dear Secretary Salazar: I Strongly
Dear Secretary Salazar: I strongly oppose the Bush administration's illegal and illogical regulations under Section 4(d) and Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, which reduce protections to polar bears and create an exemption for greenhouse gas emissions. I request that you revoke these regulations immediately, within the 60-day window provided by Congress for their removal. The Endangered Species Act has a proven track record of success at reducing all threats to species, and it makes absolutely no sense, scientifically or legally, to exempt greenhouse gas emissions -- the number-one threat to the polar bear -- from this successful system. I urge you to take this critically important step in restoring scientific integrity at the Department of Interior by rescinding both of Bush's illegal regulations reducing protections to polar bears. • “People Get Ready”
“People Get Ready” Excerpt from Lyrics By Curtis Mayfield People get ready, there's a train a comin' You don't need no baggage, you just get on board All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin' Don't need no ticket, you just thank the Lord Excerpt from the Chapter Essay by Craig Werner No song captures the feel of the early Movement better than Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-inflected “People Get Ready,” which culminates in an invitation to “get on board.” The center of a vibrant Chicago soul scene, which in terms of pure talent rivaled Detroit and Memphis, Mayfield embodied the relationship between Civil Rights, gospel and soul. Known as "the gentle genius," Mayfield grew up attending the Traveling Souls Spiritualist Church, a storefront church pastured by his Grandmother on Chicago’s poverty-stricken West Side. The experienced shaped both his politics and his approach to music. “Gospel was your foundation,” Mayfield said when asked about the inspiration for his songwriting. “All you had to do was just change some few lyrics. ‘Keep on Pushing’ was intended, written as a gospel song. All I needed to do to lock it in with The Impressions was say ‘I’ve got my strength’ instead of “God gave me strength and it don’t make sense.’ Nothing else needed to be changed.” WWW.TEACHROCK.ORG That quiet determination was part of what made Mayfield’s music more than just background for the Movement. When Martin Luther King, Jr., launched an ultimately unsuccessful campaign targeting housing discrimination in Chicago, organizers tapped into The Impressions' local popularity even more directly.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 95 OCTOBER 7TH, 2019 Welcome to Copper #95! This is being written on October 4th---or 10/4, in US notation. That made me recall one of my former lives, many years and many pounds ago: I was a UPS driver. One thing I learned from the over-the- road drivers was that the popular version of CB-speak, "10-4, good buddy" was not generally used by drivers, as it meant something other than just, "hi, my friend". The proper and socially-acceptable term was "10-4, good neighbor." See? You never know what you'll learn here. In #95, Professor Larry Schenbeck takes a look at the mysteries of timbre---and no, that's not pronounced like a lumberjack's call; Dan Schwartz returns to a serious subject --unfortunately; Richard Murison goes on a sea voyage; Roy Hall pays a bittersweet visit to Cuba; Anne E. Johnson’s Off the Charts looks at the long and mostly-wonderful career of Leon Russell; J.I. Agnew explains how machine screws brought us sound recording; Bob Wood continues wit his True-Life Radio Tales; Woody Woodward continues his series on Jeff Beck; Anne’s Trading Eights brings us classic cuts from Miles Davis; Tom Gibbs is back to batting .800 in his record reviews; and I get to the bottom of things in The Audio Cynic, and examine direct some off-the-wall turntables in Vintage Whine. Copper #95 wraps up with Charles Rodrigues on extreme room treatment, and a lovely Parting Shot from my globe-trotting son, Will Leebens.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens The Reverend Alison Wilbur Eskildsen, Parish Minister The Reverend Don Randall, Community Minister “Singing to Selma” © by Myrna Adams West and Herb West, Lay Ministers A sermon delivered on March 8, 2015 At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, GA Centering Thoughts The freedom songs are playing a strong and vital role in our struggle. They give the people new courage and a sense of unity. Martin Luther King, Jr. Singing provided an outlet of protest for those who might normally have been intimidated by racist authority or mobs, and allowed those outside the struggle to become directly engaged. Smithsonian Folkways Singing is running this sound through your body. You cannot sing a song and not change your condition. Bernice Johnson Reagon, SNCC Freedom Singer and founder of ‘Sweet Honey in the Rock’ Sermon Herb Intro to Gathering Songs: As we gather for this morning’s worship service, let us begin with two familiar folk songs which became part of the Civil Rights movement in the 50’s and 60’s, primarily thanks to Peter, Paul, and Mary who performed them at the August 1963 March On Washington as well as during the march from Selma to Montgomery 50 years ago this month. Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind” in 1962, adapting the melody from an old African-American spiritual, “No More Auction Block.” It soon became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement. Mavis Staples, of the famous Staples Singers, expressed her astonishment on first hearing the song, and said she could not understand how a young white man could write something which captured the frustration and aspirations of black people so powerfully.
