Hall \ THE MISSIONARY SPIRIT IN THE AUGUSTANA CHURCH The American church is made up of many varied groups, depending on origin, divisions, changing relationships. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies. -

The Devotional Writers and Lutheran Spirituality The heart of Lutheran spirituality is found in Luther’s famous axiom Oratio, Meditatio, Tentatio (prayer, meditation, and affliction). The one who has been declared righteous through faith in Christ the crucified and who has died and rose in Baptism will, as the psalmist says, “delight … in the Law of the Lord and in His Law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). He will read, mark, learn, and take the Word to heart. Luther writes concerning meditation on the Biblical truths in the preface of the Large Catechism, “In such reading, conversation, and meditation the Holy Spirit is present and bestows ever new and greater light and devotion, so that it tastes better and better and is digested, as Christ also promises in Matthew 18[:20].”1 Through the Word and Sacraments the entire Trinity makes its dwelling in us and we have union and communion with the divine and are conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29; Colossians 3:10). -

Glencairn invites a diverse audience to engage with religious beliefs and practices, past and present, with the goal of fostering empathy and building understanding among people of all beliefs. The exhibition features items from the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, Special Collections at the Martin Library of Franklin and Marshall College, the Pennsylvania Folklife Society at the Myrin Library of Ursinus College, as well as the private collections of Eric Claypoole, Patrick J. Donmoyer, and the relatives of barn star artist Milton Hill, especially Harold & Esther (Hill) Derr, Lee Heffner, and Bart Hill. This exhibition catalog is dedicated with gratitude to the memory of barn star artist Milton J. Hill (1887-1972) of Virginville, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and to his wife Gertrude (Strasser) Hill, who supported his work, as well as to his family, especially his daughter Esther (Hill) Derr and her husband Harold Derr; his nephew Bart Hill; his grandson Lee Heffner; his granddaughter Dorian (Derr) Featheroff, and all of his descendants living and departed. A true artist of the stars, Milton Hill’s commitment to the celestial orientation of this unique Pennsylvania art form preserved and continued the folk culture’s traditional views for generations to come. -

LUTHERAN QUIZ As I investigated the Lutheran distinctives, I was relieved to see the emphasis Luther placed on fathers teaching the Christian faith to their children. Each Chief Part of the Small Catechism declares, “As the head of the family should teach his household…” It echoes my own conviction about what Scripture teaches. Indeed, during my time as a non-denominational church pastor I was constantly teaching our fathers how to teach the Christian faith to their little ones by the use of various catechisms. We even stepped it up a notch when our parents and children participated in a Bible Trivia match, utilizing competition against other churches. Other churches in our area memorized the same questions and answers, allowing us to compete on both the State and National levels. This ministry was an important piece in teaching the faith to our children. After discussing my experience with Pr. Bruss, we are creating something similar specifically for those children ages, 6 to 11. We want to instill in them the Bible knowledge as well as highlighting the Lutheran difference so that when Pr. Bruss, Deaconess Linda and I have those same children in catechism class, there is plenty to build upon. HOW IT WORKS: First, children and their parents (parents are key to success with this!) begin working on memorizing the questions and their answers. These are simple questions, with many answers containing only one word. When my children were little we reviewed questions at meals, throughout the day and at bed time. -

First of all, we must understand that it is not man who finds the way to God by eventually working his way to Him. No, rather, it is God who finds His way to man’s heart. God begins early, already in baptism. We can never think highly enough of our baptism. In baptism I became a Christian, because in that moment I was met by God’s election. In the same way that God once chose Israel, in the same way that he again and again intervened in its history at definitive points with a decisive message, in the same way that He came down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ to go to the lost and once again establish the covenant with them - in the same way God has also in baptism broken into my life’s story, given me a share in the life of Christ, made a covenant with me, and said that He has chosen me for participation in His kingdom. -

They have a way of testing every nerve, teaching us real patience. Young children seem to act up exactly when we want them to behave most—for instance, at Church. What do you do with toddlers who‘d prefer not to sit still, to listen attentively, or keep quiet? Do you keep them in the sanctuary, causing, what seems to be a disturbance? Do you bribe them? Or, do you take the easy way out, not coming at all—waiting ‗til they get older? Attending Church with children can be difficult—a nightmare, even. But is it worth it? Yes; by all means, yes! It‘s worth every drop of sweat trying to keep them in line. It‘s worth every shred of pride and dignity you feel you‘ve lost for your child acting up. It‘s worth it all—every hassle, struggle, and embarrassment. Why? Well, for many reasons, but two in particular. First, because this is part of their learning, their growing in the faith.
