NAILSEA “Strays” in 1881 Those people who were born in Nailsea but were living elsewhere in the UK at the time of the 1881 census Book Two Includes only those in resident in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucester, Somerset* and Wiltshire (* Excludes Nailsea) For residents of other Counties see Book ONE compiled by Peter Wright This ebook version, © Peter Wright and Nailsea & District Local History Society, PO Box 1089, Nailsea BS48 2YP, has been made available in January 2008, so that an individual may download and read this document, for private research purposes only. It must not be reproduced or passed to a third party without written permission of the copyright holders Introduction About 10 years ago when I first purchased the set of disks comprising the 1881 census I had the idea of trying to see where many coalminers and glassworkers moved following the failure of both industries in Nailsea. As I prepared data I noticed several families who had obviously moved away from Nailsea and returned and moved away later. Unfortunately for various reasons I did not complete my survey nor draw any conclusions from the data extracted. Recently I was asked for more data to be made available on our web site and I remembered that which follows. I have found it convenient to make the data available in two “volumes” Book One covers those born in Nailsea who moved a fair distance, while Book Two covers those who remained in the South West. The various stages through which this data has gone before being presented here means that there is a greater chance of there being some errors.
