Cooper, Mark From: Fuller, Heather Sent: 02 April 2014 10:47 To: Cooper, Mark Subject: FW: Wraxall and Failand Parish - Review of N. Somerset Council ward boundaries From: Robert Hellen [ Sent: 02 April 2014 10:17 To: Reviews@ Subject: Wraxall and Failand Parish – Review of N. Somerset Council ward boundaries I object most strongly to the proposal to split the Parish of Wraxall and Failand between the two Wards of “Wraxall and Gordano” and “Pill and Easton In Gordano” in North Somerset, following “Map B”. I have a strong preference for the proposals in “Map A” for the following reasons: I understand that this proposal results from objections from Portbury and Pill/Easton in Gordano that splitting the parish between two wards would create difficulties in reaching agreements between the representatives. The new proposal regarding Failand is much worse in that four elected representatives, rather than the two we currently have, would have to obtain a full understanding of the Parish Council’s concerns in order to properly represent them. If it was felt that splitting another parish might be problematic, what sense is there in splitting ours? This proposal would be highly detrimental to the interests of Wraxall and Failand Parish Council and the people it represents.

  • The HISTORY FLAX BOURTON
The HISTORY FLAX BOURTON BY THE REV. GEORGE S. MASTER, M.A. Edited by Robert J Evered 1 Nailsea and District Local History Society thanks Robert J Evered for offering this transcription of Master’s History of Flax Bourton. Although the parish is just outside our normal area of interest it seems churlish not to make it available to those whose interests occasionally wander beyond parish boundaries. Peter Wright Editor and Publisher N&DLHS This ebook version, © Robert J Evered and Nailsea & District Local History Society, PO Box 1089, Nailsea BS48 2YP, has been made available in January 2009, so that an individual may download and read this document, for private research purposes only. It must not be reproduced or passed to a third party without written permission of the copyright holders 2 FLAX BOURTON Occupying the centre of a fertile valley, which extends from the river Avon at Bristol on the East to the Bristol Channel between Clevedon and Weston-Super-Mare on the West, and bounded on the North and South by picturesque well-wooded ranges of mountain limestone resting upon red sandstone, the Parish of Flax Bourton, notwithstanding its insignificance in size and importance, as compared with its adjoining neighbours, is rich in natural advantages. I note with approval the colour of its soil, and recal the satisfactory testimony to its value of no less an authority than Dr. Buckland, who, speaking to our Society in 1849, assured his audience that “let the soil be red and the soil will never be bad; let gentlemen buy their estates, and not sell them, upon the red soil.”1 The area of the Parish, comprising only 590 acres,2 includes the beautiful limestone gorge known as Bourton Combe, with its grey precipices on either side, indigenous yew and elder trees growing out of the crannies of the stone, while from the summit is an extensive prospect, the city of Bristol, with the ranges of Dundry and Lansdown, the Bristol Channel, and the mountains of Wales, the slopes of Clevedon and Ashton, and the hanging woods of nearer Tyntesfield.

When I was about 10 I was called young man all the time – a sort of compliment. I was gathering myself together and becoming a grown up person. I enjoyed the title as it promised me adulthood and respect. The young man occasions then waned in the intervening years as I became “sir”.

  • How Congresbury Has Grown
How Congresbury has grown A report for Congresbury Parish Council Authors: Tom Leimdorfer, Stuart Sampson Publication June 2015 Updated January 2018 Population and properties in Congresbury January 2018 [1] Congresbury Key Figures Population 3497 Age breakdown Source: Census 2011, National Office for Statistics Population and properties in Congresbury January 2018 [2] Household properties 1475 Population and properties in Congresbury January 2018 [3] How Congresbury has changed over 100 years The population of Congresbury grew by just over 450 people between 1901 and 1961. During the 60’s the population of the village doubled as by 1971, the census showed 3397 people. This can be seen in diagram 1. Diagram 1 – Total population reported in Congresbury1 A large part of this growth was due to the action of Axbridge Rural District Council in the post-war years to build the Southlands council estate to ensure that local working people had homes in which they could afford to live. Even at that time, when a cottage in the old part of the village became vacant it fetched a price which local young couples could not raise. The Rev. Alex Cran’s history of Congresbury recounts the tensions of the time. Opposition to the Southlands estate came from those who wanted ‘infill’ amongst the rest of the village, but such a scheme would have been too expensive (p216 ‘The Story of Congresbury’). Bungalows in Well Park were partly aimed at persuading older residents to move to smaller houses from Southlands and vacate the larger dwellings for families. Many homes in Southlands Way, Southside and Well Park are now privately owned.
