Services face the challenge of devising support packages that keep the person at the centre and recognise diverse and different needs. The expression 'people with dementia' implies for many workers that all individuals have the same needs and that they are all old. In reality individuals with dementia are of different ages who have a range of needs that include: emotional, physical, economic, health and lifestyle issues. Given the wide range of circumstances, this conference will focus on how intervention can maintain the person's Presentersquality of life. and Workshop Leaders Professor June Andrews is the Director of the Dementia Services Development Centre and previously was Director of the Centre for Change and Innovation at the Scottish Executive. Alan Chapman is Associate Director (Education & Training) at the Dementia Services Development Centre and has written and co-edited numerous training publications and leads workplace training courses for workers in health, social work and voluntary agency settings. Sylvia Cox is an independent consultant in the field of housing, health and care services and chaired the expert group on Alcohol Related Brain Damage during 2005. She was previously planning consultant at the Dementia Services Development Centre. Colm Cunningham is Associate Director for Health and Social Care at DSDC and manages the consultancy services of the Centre. He has a background in and social work. Recent publications on supporting people with dementia include issues in acute care, pain management and people with a learning disability. Maria Dick is team manager of the Sensory Impairment Team for Falkirk Council. Anne Ferguson is the National Project Manager with responsibility for the Age Concern Scotland Elder Abuse project. Dr Graham Jackson is a Consultant in Old Age psychiatry and an Honorary Lecturer of the Dementia Services Development Centre. He previously worked as a GP and is co-author of ‘Understanding Dementia’ and ‘What Behaviour - Whose Problem’. Dr Ray Lang is an international disability consultant and speaker who specialises in national/international disability issues with a particular focus on policy development and service provision. He is frequently involved with governments and voluntary agencies in providing assessment of services. Colin MacDonald is an Associate of the Centre and is seconded to the Centre for 12 months from his role as charge nurse of a Behaviour Ward at Bonnybridge . Annabelle Meredith & Bob Siman. Tor Nursing Home, Edinburgh. Annabelle and Bob work together and use music and words to trigger memory with residents in the care home. Allison Thomson, Prior to her present post Alison worked in NHS Continuing Care for people with dementia in Scotland, and Canada and has studied Law and Ethics. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Recognising and Responding to Pain in People with Dementia Colm Cunningham From his experience as a researcher the latest thinking on pain and dementia will be described, with practical examples of management in acute hospital and other care settings.

Workshop 2. Effective Services for those with Alcohol Related Brain Damage Sylvia Cox From her experience as chair of a national working group creating strategies for the management of ARBD, this researcher will explore the practical issues. Workshop 3. Ethical Issues for Providing Support June Andrews Caring for people at the end of life and when they have a condition which may lead to risky behaviour raises ethical questions. Issues such as the need for restraint, observation, and how this relates to a person centred response will be considered.

Workshop 4. Responding to the Behaviour of People with Dementia Colin MacDonald A charge nurse and associate trainer with extensive experience will lead a workshop on current thinking and practical strategies in responding to the behaviour of people with dementia.
