AVC Dean=S Honor Roll Students AVC honours students and faculty at 2016 Fall Awards and Recognition Night Students and faculty at the Atlantic Veterinary College were honoured at the College’s annual Fall Awards and Recognition Night held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Approximately $148,000 in scholarships and awards was given out at the awards ceremony, and two faculty members were presented with teaching awards. As well, students who achieved an average of 80% or higher in the 2015–16 academic year were named to the AVC Dean’s Honour List. Congratulations, everyone!     CCHA, Historical Studies, 68 (2002), 7-23 Gender and Nationalism: Acadians, Québécois, and Irish in New Brunswick Nineteenth-Century Colleges and Convent Schools, 1854-1888 Sheila ANDREW The role of Quebec classical colleges in encouraging nationalism is already clear and several excellent studies have shown the importance of Quebec convents in developing women’s role, but we know less about nationalism among women or in New Brunswick classical colleges or convents, where the Acadian self-image developed as a counterpoint to Québécois or Irish nationalism.1 Nationalism developed in both colleges and convents, but it took different forms that related to gender. College and convent administra- tors encouraged bilingualism but colleges also developed aggressive Acadian, Québécois, and Irish nationalism, sometimes as a by-product of tensions in New Brunswick or within the college and religious commu- nity, and sometimes deliberately, as a valued manifestation of masculine emulation. As a BBC Presenter and Chief International Correspondent, she has reported from around the world for the past thirty years and her postings have included Abidjan, Kabul, Islamabad, Tehran, Amman, and Jerusalem. In recent years her travel has often taken her to the Middle East, including Syria, as well as to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Her work has won a series of journalism awards and she holds honorary doctorates from universities in both Canada and the UK. DOUGLAS W BRYANT (1913 – 1994) was educated at Stanford, Munich and the University of Michigan. Following service as a US naval officer in World War II, he served as Associate Librarian of the University of California at Berkeley.     Rundquist: C3b Y DNA Study 8/12 C3b Y Chromosome DNA Test Results Point to Native American Deep Ancestry, Relatedness, among United States and Canadian Study Participants By Marie Rundquist August 2012 Introduction: A study of Amerindian ancestry by way of DNA testing involves the comparison of participant test results with genetic sequences established for indigenous, Native American populations. The primary objective of a Y chromosome DNA study of Amerindian ancestry is to confirm, by way of DNA testing, the likelihood that a male project participant descends directly from a Native American paternal-line ancestor. A secondary objective, important to a study of genealogy, is to establish that project participants of the same surname have shared a common, paternal-line, ancestor within recent generations. Surname studies benefit from Y chromosome DNA tests as the male chromosome passes from a father to a son, by way of inheritance, virtually unchanged except for mutations, and matching genetic sequences, discovered among surname study participants, can determine the probability of a most recent common ancestor -- a family patriarch - within a genealogically significant period of time. Within DNA surname studies that trace the paternal line, short tandem repeats (STRs) are particularly useful; a close, Y chromosome DNA match, calculated at 67 (STR) markers, points to a high probability that a common, male, paternal line ancestor exists within recent generations of a family genealogy. DNA tests may also be used to uncover deepest ancestral origins. The C3b Y DNA haplogroup, at the center of the study, is characterized by the P39 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), a genetic indicator of deep, Native American ancestry.
