Prior to the Second World War the village of Whyteleafe ran a football club called Whyteleafe Albion who competed at a local level for many years. Albion was disbanded as a result of the war and new club simply called Whyteleafe FC was formed in 1946. The new club commenced Junior football as members of the Caterham and Edenbridge, the Thornton Heath & District and the Croydon Leagues. Of these early years season 1951/2, was the most successful, with a strong 'Leafe line-up becoming Thornton Heath League Champions, Winners of two local Charity Cups and runners-up in both the Surrey County Junior Cup and the League Cup. Two years later they progressed to the Surrey County Intermediate League (Eastern Division) and were Division 1 Champions in 1955/6. 1958 saw the signifi - cant transition from Junior to Senior status and entry into the Surrey Senior League. This change required the club to move from the New Barn Lane School ground which was inadequate for senior football and with a dynamic committee under the leadership of Secretary Dick Baxendine, the club purchased approxi - mately four acres of farmland in nearby Church Road, where the club still play today. Play commenced on the ground in season 1959/60, and in the early sixties the club gained minor rewards with the reserve team playing under the guidance of former Crystal Palace hero Roy Greenwood. The next success came as the 1960s drew to a close which saw 'Leafe as Surrey Senior League Champions and runners up to Bracknell Town in the League Cup. These successes came under the guidance of manager Tom Sweetman with Les Brown the former Wimbledon and Guildford City amateur international as player- coach. Les later went on to become manager for a short while. In the 1970s the floodlight training area and stand were built and in 1975, after sev - enteen happy years with the Surrey Senior League, the club moved into the London Spartan League, where the best they achieved was third place on two occasions in the six years of their membership. In 1981 the club joined the Athenian League and it was at about this time in the early 80s that the main pitch floodlights were installed and the dressing rooms were moved to a new location on the top bank enabling the clubhouse to be extended. In November 1986 Steve Kember joined the club as Manager having been associ - ated with the club for some years previously when with Crystal Palace with whom he had won considerable success. In two successive seasons Kember engineered the club through to the third Qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Woking in 1988/89 and Wokingham in 1989/90 after having held them to a 1-1 draw at Wokingham. A highly successful in 1988/89 saw the club win promotion as runners-up in Division Two South to Division One. For the first time ever the club reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup when a crowd of 2,164, easily beat the previous season’s record in a match which saw them hold league opponents Chester City to a 0-0 draw before going down 1-3 in a replay at Chester. An imposing new stand was built at the top end of the ground just in time for the big match thanks to a superb effort from all involved with the club. To cap this a highest ever league position of 7th was attained. The 2000/01 season ended in disappointment when ‘Leafe’s promotion hopes were blighted by end of season fixture congestion, primarily caused by the win - ter’s atrocious winter. However, having a successfully undertaken a programme of continued ground improvement and not without considerable hard work by supporters and club management, enabled the club achieved the much sought after ‘A’ grading of their ground. Paul Owens' seven years as chairman ended in 2001 and Tony Lidbury replaced Paul for his third period of office as Chairman with Youth Secretary Graham Douce being elected Vice Chairman. 2001/02 brought troubles in its train. Following the promotion battles of the pre - vious two seasons, the ‘Leafe’s form slumped and despite a promising start early exits from all cup competitions was followed by a 20th place in the league. A further reorganisation of the Ryman League saved the club from it's first rele - gation Tony Lidbury resigned as chairman in October 2002 and was replaced by Mark Coote.. Lee Richardson’s reign came to and end when he resigned , following a heavy defeat , in December 2003. Stuart Massey took over as player-manager on 1st January 2004 and immediately set about bringing promising youngsters to the team . 2005-2006 ended in disappointment when the young team failed to attain its achievements of the previous year and finished 17th in the league. In October 2006 Massey resigned along with coach Curtis Warmington after a string of poor results. He was succeeded by David Swindlehurst who immedi - ately brought in several new players to shake up the squad. Relegation was avoided albeit by only one place. In 2007-2008 Swindlehurst’s team reached the Final of the Surrey Senior Cup before being pipped in extra time by Merstham. Swindlehurst quit the club immediately after the game. For 2008-2009 Stuart Massey took over the reins again , bring back Bernie Donnelly as his assistant. RRYYMMAANN LLEEAAGGUUEE NNEEWWSS Midweek action from the Premier Division

Good afternoon everyone,

As Tom is off on a jolly up at the moment, I am back in the seat for this week’s game against Whyteleafe. Just so that you all know, he will be getting fined a weeks money for having a holiday during the season and is kindly donating this all to the ‘end of season players fund’!

Just to let you all know that I had a double hernia operation a couple of weeks ago and am now on the mend! It was a lot worse than I was expecting to be honest but I should be able to start light training early next week and with any luck I will be back to full fitness in about 4 weeks time. I have never been one who can run very fast so no need to worry too much. Obviously it’s very frustrating not playing and being involved week in week out but hopefully it will not be too much longer.

As we have had quite a few away games recently I have not been able to get to them to watch and don’t really know how we have been playing. However, having spoken to Abbo and Brades, they are happy with how things are going, especially in the league and consider - ing the young squad that we have (not including me obviously). For the last couple of games we have missed Bradders who is our main striker and against Burgess Hill we were also missing Lawrence, both of these players will make a big difference when they are back. I am told by a reliable source that Tuesday’s result against Burgess Hill was in no way a fair reflection of the game and that there were quite a few positives to take from it.

We have got a few tough games coming up this month starting today with Whyteleafe. They have always given us a good run for our money both home and away so we will need to be at our best. If we are, then I have got no doubt that we will take three points and move on to Tuesday’s cup game against Faversham.

Cheers and all the best.

Joe

Just over four years ago, Hinckley United’s Matt Gadsby collapsed and died during a Conference North game at Harrogate Town.

Former Walsall, Mansfield, Kidderminster and Forest Green defender Gadsby had just turned 27 and had been living with an undetected heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC).

His wife, Sarah, had given birth to their first child, Amelia, just eight months earlier. As a Non-League player with a daughter of the same name and age, I sat with tears streaming down my face as I read Internet tributes from family, team-mates, opponents and strangers. An interview with Sarah on the first anniversary of the husband’s death was the most heartrending I’ve done.

Gadsby’s condition also claimed the life of Motherwell’s Phil O’Donnell, and was similar to the more high-profile death of Manchester City midfielder Marc Vivien Foe, who suffered hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Gadsby wasn’t, and won’t be, alone in passing away during a Non-League game. Just a few months earlier, striker Paul Sykes died during a game for Folkestone Invicta against his for - mer side Margate.

Sykes was a year older but, like Gadsby, had recently become a father for the first time and was suffering from ARVC, where the right ventricular muscle cells are progressively replaced by fibrous tissue and fat.

The startling truth is that wherever you are watching your football today, there is likely to be at least one player in that league playing with potentially fatal heart condition they know nothing about.

Steve Cox, director of screening at Cardiac Risk in the Young, recently told our sister publi - cation, The Football League Paper: “We’ve been screening people for 15 years and what we’ve found is that around one in 300 people will have an underlying cardiac abnormality that they are unaware of.”

Screening in the form of an electrocardiogram (ECG) costs just £35, and there are calls for it to be mandatory for all professional footballers. But what about the thousands in the game’s grass-roots? In a 22-team league there are 352 footballers every Saturday and most Tuesdays not being screened. Cox added: “Academy players will be screened, as will guys in the . But these incidents don’t occur very often at that high level. They occur on the way up, often in grass-roots football, but they only get published in local papers so nobody hears about it. “Obviously finance is an issue. There are a lot of people playing football at all the different levels and to screen them all would be very expensive. But we feel that £35 is a reasonable amount.”
