This edition has a really wide range of articles covering everything from Martin Leadbetter’s review of the AP100 Campaign Launch at the House of Commons to the Chamber Orchestra’s Italian tour. This year’s IB results are superb and they’re a hearty endorsement of the Chief Master’s bold decision to take the school along this more rigorous academic path, returning it to its rightful place at the leading edge of education. In no small part the increase in the number of Assisted Places has contributed to this success and I am pleased to say that the OEA has again played its part with a donation to the AP100 Campaign which will be followed by a significantly larger donation later this year. Coming up on Tuesday 23 September at 1.00pm is the AGM of the Association. Whilst I recognise that AGMs are not the most popular of events, this year’s AGM is important as a new constitution is being introduced. The aim is, now that the school has taken over the running of the OEA, to modernise the Articles of Association to meet its needs going forward. In the future we are aiming to have a committee of the Association that represents each decade of OEs to advise Simon Lerwill and his team on the best way to maintain contact with the general body Front cover image: of alumni. Panorama: The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II TX: 15/02/2016 Dur: 29'00" Broadcaster: BBC 1 Production Company: Blakeway This film – for the BBC, Arte and PBS - made headlines in newspapers around the world. It was the result of a 4-year investigation by journalist Edward Stourton. He discovered hundreds of letters and photographs that revealed an intense emotional relationship between Pope John Paul 11 and a married woman, Polish born American philosopher, Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which spanned 30 years (from his time as a Cardinal until his death as Pope). The letters had been acquired for a six figure sum by the Polish National Library, and were then hidden away while the process of securing sainthood for John Paul was in progress. The revelations turned what might have been a history programme into a current affairs investigation. It would seem there was a cover-up. Following a tip-off that the letters existed, it took two years to track them down and another year to gain access to them. It was clear Anna Teresa had fallen in love with John Paul and had declared that love. There is no evidence that the relationship was physical, but the prudent course would have been to end it. John Paul was determined it should continue, and even tried to justify it in religious terms. The letters had been sold to the Polish Library by Anna Teresa after the death of her husband, and Stourton assumed that the archive consisted simply of John Paul’s letters to her.

    Reference: FS50150782 Freedom of Information Act 2000 (Section 50) Decision Notice Date: 25 March 2008 Public Authority: British Broadcasting Corporation (‘BBC’) Address: MC3 D1 Media Centre Media Village 201 Wood Lane London W12 7TQ Summary The complainant requested details of payments made by the BBC to a range of personalities, actors, journalists and broadcasters. The BBC refused to provide the information on the basis that the information was held for the purposes of journalism, art and literature. Having considered the purposes for which this information is held, the Commissioner has concluded that the requested information was not held for the dominant purposes of journalism, art and literature and therefore the request falls within the scope of the Act. Therefore the Commissioner has decided that in responding to the request the BBC failed to comply with its obligations under section 1(1). Also, in failing to provide the complainant with a refusal notice the Commissioner has decided that the BBC breached section 17(1) of the Act. However, the Commissioner has also concluded that the requested information is exempt from disclosure by virtue of section 40(2) of the Act. The Commissioner’s Role 1. The Commissioner’s duty is to decide whether a request for information made to a public authority has been dealt with in accordance with the requirements of Part 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the “Act”). In the particular circumstances of this complaint, this duty also includes making a formal decision on whether the BBC is a public authority with regard to the information requested by the complainant.

    CHAPTER 12 Footballers and Conductors: Between Reclusiveness and Conviviality Anders Høg Hansen Introduction: Historic Occasions---A Football Match and a Human Exhibition In a personal correspondence in April 2018, British cultural theorist Paul Gilroy comments on a particular event concerning one of the cases of this chapter. It was clear that this was a historic occasion and I was delighted to have had the chance to witness it / Laurie had lit up that season and we all knew he was leaving so there was a mood of farewell about that. He and I are the same age and grew up in the same area of London so I always had a particular identification with him / The game wasn’t much though it was nice to see so many black spectators in the ground. Laurie took one of those artistic corner kicks. The historic occasion which Gilroy commented upon was ‘just’ a testi- monial football match for a player named Len Cantello that took place A. H. However, it had a particular formation of players that made it novel, at a particular time in British history—and in football his- tory. Gilroy mentions a Laurie. That was Laurie Cunningham (from now on just Laurie), characterised as a soul boy, music-lover and dancer by his biographer Dermot Kavanagh (2017: 44)—often gliding elegantly over the muddy pitches until envious tackles began to damage his promising career.
