Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis concerns the teachings of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (known by the acronym of his title and name as Rashaz; 1745-1813), founder of the Habad movement, which remains to this day one of the largest and most influential schools of Hasidism. It focuses on his concept of time, which features in various contexts in both his mystical and his legal writings. The thesis challenges the commonly held view that Rashaz’s teachings form primarily a mystical doctrine concerned with supra-temporal transcendence. It begins with a description of his teachings as an integration of the philosophical definition of time into his kabbalistically informed worldview. Next, it analyses the historiosophical underpinnings of these teaching, claiming that messianic redemption played a key role in Rashaz’s model of spirituality. His messianic awareness is further explored in a critical discussion of his view of the imminence of the messianic advent, the role of the messianic figure, and the various ways in which the redeemed world will be experienced in the future-to-come. By focusing next on the significance that Rashaz ascribed to setting regular times for normative Torah study, the thesis demonstrates his keen awareness of the crucial role of time in the service of the divine, an insight which enabled him to turn Habad into a movement that attracted not only the spiritual-intellectual elite but also many ordinary, non- scholarly Jews.     1 SHABBETAI TZVI The Biggest Hoax in Jewish History While faith in the coming of the messiah is a linchpin of Judaism, Jews have traditionally taken a patient, quiet approach to their messianic beliefs. Since the devastation wreaked by false messiah Bar Kochba and his rebellion against the Romans, and the centuries of persecution caused by another messianic movement — Christianity — Jews have been understandably suspicious about anyone’s claim to be God’s anointed. The rabbis of the Talmud went so far as to introduce specific prohibitions against messianic agitation, instituting the “three oaths” which prohibited any attempt to “force the end” by bringing the messiah before his allotted time (Babylonian Talmud. Yet in the mid-17th century, belief in the false messiah Shabbetai Tzvi spread like wildfire throughout the Jewish world, sweeping up entire communities and creating a crisis of faith unprecedented in Jewish history. Shabbetai Tzvi was said to be born on the 9th of Av in 1626, to a wealthy family of merchants in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey). He received a thorough Talmudic education and, still in his teens, was ordained as a hakham — a member of the rabbinic elite. However, Shabbetai Tzvi was interested less in Talmud than in Jewish mysticism. Starting in his late teens he studied kabbalah, attracting a group of followers whom he initiated into the secrets of the mystical tradition. Shabbetai Tzvi battled with what might now be diagnosed as severe bipolar disorder. He understood his condition in religious terms, experiencing his manic phases as moments of “illumination” and his times of depression as periods of “fall,” when God’s face was hidden from him.

The spread of printing meant that distinct scribal styles became generic fonts, erratic spellngs became uni- form and sequential numbering of pages became standard. The first printed books (incunabula) were typeset copies of manu- scripts, lacking pagination and often not uniform. As a result, incunabu- la share many characteristics with manuscripts, such as leaving a blank space for the first letter or word to be embellshed with an ornamental woodcut, a colophon at the end of the work rather than a title page, and the use of signatures but no pagination.2 The Gutenberg Bibles, for example, were printed with blank spaces to be completed by calligra- phers, accounting for the varying appearance of the surviving Bibles. It is pro- foundly pleasurable to reveal how two Torah ideas which, ostensibly, are unrelated, are in fact intimately connected to one another. Ya’akov Avinu first found his small jar of oil in 1435 BCE. He went back for it 34 years later. The Chashmonaim did not find THEIR jar of oil for another 1,263 years. The only question is, WHY are they connected? The truth is, the story did not begin with Ya’akov Avinu. It only went THROUGH him. Nothing But Light!!23 And, it is not about the oil. It is about what the oil represents. It is also not about the connec- tion between Ya’akov Avinu and the Chash- monaim. In the end, they are but two “pearls” on a strand that stretches all the way back to Creation and forward to Yemos HaMoshiach, and then some. It’s about light. It’s ALWAYS about light. Is there anything else? Long before there was “good” and “evil” there was the light, unimag- inably intense and unlimited light, predating EVERYTHING, except itself. We’re not talking about physical light. That’s a creation. Photons and waves may be imperceivable by the human eye, but they are nevertheless quite physical, in existence only since the beginning of Creation. The light we are talking about is COMPLETELY spiritual. It was NEVER created, only filtered and manip- ulated by God to execute His will. What was His will? As far as we know, to make Creation, and to make it in such a way as to allow a free will being to exist who could EARN a life of eternal pleasure.

    Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The purpose of this group is to gather interested scholars together and review works in progress authored by members of the group and distributed and read prior to the AJS meeting. 2006 will be the sixth year of a formal meeting within which we have exchanged ideas and shared our work with peers in a casual, constructive environment. This is similar to [the matter of] “Whatever HaShem desires He has done in the heavens and the earth etc”.2 The root of this “desire of HaShem” is rooted in the first source (which is called Yachid – Singular etc). This is the aspect of the essential Heyulie desire for kindness in the Essence of the Infinite Light (Atzmoot Ohr Ein Sof) which is [an] absolutely simple [singularity]. This [desire for kindness] is similar to the essentially good and kind nature embedded in the essence of the soul (as explained above in chapter ten). Once it arose in G-d’s will and desire to bestow goodness in a particular way from this general heyulie light,3 [this desire] descended with a great chaining down. [Nonetheless], all [this was] still within Himself [and was still] in the aspect of Infinity (Ein Sof), until this desire reached the aspects of Netzach and Hod of the externality of the vessel of the “Heart”. In other words, [it reached] the external emotions (Midot) of Malchut of the Infinite (Ain Sof), even though as it is there, [in Malchut of Ein Sof] it completely transcends the aspect of limitations of lights within vessels. Rather, it all is literally in an aspect of Infinity (Ein Sof), as “He estimated it within Himself”.4 Afterwards, there was a Tzimtzum [withdrawal] and it descended by means of the aspect of the Line (Kav) within the ten sefirot of Circles (Igullim) etc, until the aspect of Keter of Adam Kadmon.5 [Now, Keter of Adam Kadmon] is the source of the concealed desire (Ratzon HaNe’elam) which becomes revealed as the “desire for the desire” within Keter of Atik Yomin 1 This refers to all the preceding chapters (at least from ten through thirty two).

I would go to his classes once a week and listen with strong intention to try to understand the practice of meditation, a practice that was changing my everyday life.
