Perkins, Anthony (1932-1992) by Tina Gianoulis Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2007 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The life and career of actor Anthony Perkins seems almost like a movie script from the times in which he lived. One of the dark, vulnerable anti-heroes who gained popularity during Hollywood's "post-golden" era, Perkins began his career as a teen heartthrob and ended it unable to escape the role of villain. In his personal life, he often seemed as tortured as the troubled characters he played on film, hiding--and perhaps despising--his true nature while desperately seeking happiness and "normality." Perkins was born on April 4, 1932 in New York City, the only child of actor Osgood Perkins and Janet Esseltyn Rane. His father died when he was only five, and Perkins was reared by his strong-willed and possibly abusive mother. He followed his father into the theater, joining Actors Equity at the age of fifteen and working backstage until he got his first acting roles in summer stock productions of popular plays like Junior Miss and My Sister Eileen. He continued to hone his acting skills while attending Rollins College in Florida, performing in such classics as Harvey and The Importance of Being Earnest. Perkins was an unhappy young man, and the theater provided escape from his loneliness and depression. "There was nothing about me I wanted to be," he told Mark Goodman in a People Weekly interview. "But I felt happy being somebody else." During his late teens, Perkins went to Hollywood and landed his first film role in the 1953 George Cukor production, The Actress, in which he appeared with Spencer Tracy.

Tab Hunter Confidential, LLC. “TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL” FEBRUARY 25, 2015 TRANSCRIBED BY: WORD OF MOUTH (RL) [00:00:26] TAB HUNTER : I would go out occasionally to a cocktail party and I was fascinated by all of what I saw there. There were a few guys dancing with a few guys, a couple of gals dancing with a couple of gals. It was just a party and people were dancing and having a good time. Parties like this were illegal. [00:00:53] And then the next thing I know the cops came in. Doors burst open, there they were. They were arresting a bunch of, uh, queers. They took us down to the police station. You know, I thought oh my God, this is terrible. I thought what would my mother think of my being arrested? Will it affect this career that I’m trying to get started in motion pictures? [00:01:27] An attorney, Harry Weiss appeared. He was well known for taking care of situations like that with many, many Hollywood people. He said you gotta be a lot sharper than you are. You’re in Hollywood now, you want to be an actor, and really laid down the Tab Hunter Confidential - 2 law to me. And then I was released. I had no idea it was gonna jump up and be thrown out at me years later. [00:01:57] [FILM CLIP] DICK CLARK : Here’s the young fellow you’ve been waiting for. Ladies and gentleman, Tab Hunter. VOICEOVER : Six feet of rugged manhood to stir the heart of every woman.

  • Hollywood Legend and Icon Kicks Off the 18Th Annual California Independent Film Festival
LAMORINDA WEEKLY | Hollywood Legend and Icon Kicks off the 18th Annual California Independent Film Festival Published August 26th, 2015 Hollywood Legend and Icon Kicks off the 18th Annual California Independent Film Festival By Derek Zemrak In the 1950s there were three leading men in Hollywood: James Dean, Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter. Tab Hunter was a product of the golden age of Hollywood and became Hollywood's golden boy. He was discovered at the age of 19 and the Hollywood machine made him a star. Hunter landed his first leading role in 1952 in the romantic South Sea adventure, "Island of Desire," opposite Linda Darnell. From that time forward the Hollywood marketing machine took over his life. They found their golden boy and capitalized on him. Hunter starred in over 40 studio films, including "Ride the Wild Surf," and the Academy Award nominated film, "Damn Yankees." He also co-starred opposite several screen legends such as Sophia Loren, Natalie Wood, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner and Debbie Reynolds. All his film success, though, was not good enough for Hollywood - it was time to make more money off their newfound "Teen Idol." Hunter had an amazing recording career with his song "Young Love" which soared to No. 1 on the record charts and knocked Elvis out of that spot for the first time. "Young Love" remained the number one record in the U.S. for six weeks and Hunter was now every teenage girl's dream. His popularity led him to his own television show on NBC, "The Tab Hunter Show." Hollywood created Hunter - but who is the Image provided real Tab Hunter? Find out on Opening Night of the 18th Annual California Independent Film Festival at 6:30 p.m.

  • Tab Hunter, Who Died Recently at Age 86
FEATURE TAB THE HOLLYWOOD ARCHIVE HOLLYWOOD THE HUNTER: LEGEND Fifty years ago, a chiseled young star fired up the box office and created the standard for modern Hollywood’s heartthrob heroes. That screen legend was Tab Hunter, who died recently at age 86. By Matt Myers ooking at photographs of Tab Hunter in his prime, with his chiseled good-looks, athletic physique and a pearly smile, it’s Leasy to imagine him suited-up to play a Marvel hero or Disney prince in a 20-teens blockbuster. “With blond hair and a tan,” Tab Hunter was the prototype Frankenfurter desired when he created Rocky. Tab embodied the pristine 1950s boy-next-door in Eisenhower’s America. He was so dreamy, Hollywood coined the phrase, “the sigh guy” especially for him. But behind the movie-star visage was humble Arthur Kelm, a sensitive, closeted, gay man. While many of Tab’s contemporaries suffered the pitfalls of fame and the studio system, Tab/Arthur managed to avoid them and live happily – although there were bumps along the way. Born in 1931, Arthur Kelm grew up in sunny California alongside his older brother Walter, who was later killed in the Vietnam War. He never knew his father, and he looked after his mother, Gertrude, well into the latter stages of his own life. In his youth he joined the coast guard, became a champion horseback rider and a figure skater. During his acting career, he also became an accomplished singer, releasing over 45 singles. Arthur’s entry into Hollywood, after being renamed Tab Hunter by his agent, got off to a great start with roles alongside John Wayne, Gary Cooper and Robert Mitchum playing soldiers, sailors and cowboys.

Contact: Jon Lambert P.O. Box 1029 Ojai Film Festival Ojai, CA 93024 Phone 805/640-1947 Ojai Film Festival [email protected] Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tab Hunter to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award from Ojai Film Festival August 28, 2016 – Ojai, CA . Ojai Film Festival executive director Maryse Gartner announced today that the Festival will honor famed Hollywood actor and singer Tab Hunter with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Film Festival will screen two Tab Hunter movies, Damn Yankees as the opening film on Thursday, November 3, 2016 and Tab Hunter: Confidential on Saturday, November 5, 2016. The second screening will be followed by a moderated Q&A with Hunter and producer Allan Glaser. During the 1950’s and 60’s, Tab Hunter was America’s heartthrob, receiving top billing in films like Battle Cry and The Burning Hills and topping the pop music charts. With his matinee idol looks and charming screen persona, Hunter was linked to several of Hollywood’s leading ladies, including Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds, and Sophia Loren. Behind the scenes, Hunter fended off rumors of homosexuality even as he maintained long-term partnerships with Anthony Perkins and figure skater Ronnie Robertson. According to Hunter, "[life] was difficult for me, because I was living two lives at that time. A private life of my own, which I never discussed, never talked about to anyone. And then my Hollywood life, which was just trying to learn my craft and succeed.” “It’s a real honor to be selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Tab Hunter.
