This will be a virtual event this year which will provide you with the opportunity to learn and practice the art of fine dining and business etiquette while in the comfort of your own space. Crystal Bailey, an etiquette expert from The Etiquette Institute of Washington, and a consultant for Fortune 500 companies will be the host and instructor for the evening. The meal for the event will be provided by the Office of African American Affairs and you will be able to dine as Ms. Bailey walks us through the social graces and rules of etiquette. More information about how to receive your meal will be available once you are registered. Spaces are limited so please RSVP by March 18th. This is a very special event that is co-sponsored by OAAA and McIntire School of Commerce and one that will no doubt increase your executive presence. We have to step up as women and take the lead." – Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter Faculty Spotlight Cortney Hawkins is the new Diversity Officer for the University Police Department. She recently completed the following interview with Antoinette Thomas, Associate Dean. Where are you from and what did you do before coming to UVa? I am from Birmingham, Alabama but I refer to it as Bombingham Alabama so that people will remember the 40 plus homes that were bombed on Dynamite Hill. Before coming to UVa I worked for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. I had a variety of responsibilities including planning special events such as Juneteenth. While there I also had the pleasure of meeting a real life super hero like Sarah Collins Rudolph. She was the 5th little girl who survived the bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church (She is on Facebook. You should look her up). Prior to working at the Civil Rights Institute, I was a high school teacher at Holy Family Christo Catholic High School. I taught English, American and World history and was the first teacher to incorporate African American history into the curriculum. I am a proud product of the Birmingham City School and graduated from The Ramsay High School. I played basketball in high school and for Troy University where I obtained a B.S in History with an emphasis in American and European history and a minor in Human Services. I am currently in law school and will obtain my Juris Doctoral in May 2021. Why did you decide to come to UVa? I wanted to make help make a difference in the world and UPD provides me the opportunity to advocate for civil rights and human rights. What are some of your goals as the Diversity Officer? I want us to move from being in a community to being neighbors that can really make a change. A community is just a group of people who live in a certain area but a neighborhood and a neighbor is someone that you get to know and can borrow sugar from. I encourage students and faculty to use me as a resource so that together we can make a difference in our neighborhood. Do you have any hobbies or activities that you enjoy? I enjoy playing basketball and listening to Nina Simone, I also like to do things that scare me and push me beyond my comfort zone like shark diving. Mind you, I haven’t done it yet but it is something I want to experience. I love cooking traditional southern food and drinking sweet tea. I also enjoying traveling, and reading history books. Beyoncé, who had nine nominations, the most of any artist in 2021, made history with her 28th win. "Black Parade" took Best R&B Performance. She also grabbed Best Rap Performance with Megan Thee Stallion. Adding to the family’s Grammy wins, Blue Ivy, 9 years old, also won her first Grammy in 2021 Grammy Best Music Video for "Brown Skin Girl." Blue Ivy received a writing credit for the song. "Brown Skin Girl" is featured on Beyoncé's "Lion King: The Gift" album.

    “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies—Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe At the intersection of social media, a trend in organic products, and an interest in do-it-yourself culture, the late 2000s opened a space for many Black American women to stop chemically straightening their hair via “relaxers” and begin to wear their hair natural—resulting in an Internet-based cultural phenomenon known as the “natural hair movement.” Within this context, conversations around beauty standards, hair politics, and Black women’s embodiment have flourished within the public sphere, largely through YouTube, social media, and websites. My project maps these conversations, by exploring contemporary expressions of Black women’s natural hair within cultural production. Using textual and content analysis, I investigate various sites of inquiry: natural hair product advertisements and internet representations, as well as the ways hair texture is evoked in recent song lyrics, filmic scenes, and non- fiction prose by Black women. Each of these “hair moments” offers a complex articulation of the ways Black women experience, share, and negotiate the socio-historically fraught terrain that is racialized body politics

For a moment, she lifted the veil of white supremacist thought that has dehumanized the African Diaspora. Black Is King, her new visual album released on Disney+ on Friday, reinforces the ancestral lineage of Black people as divine beings, born from the natural and spiritual forces of the universe. In the film, Beyoncé plays an omnipresent spirit who prepares the Black body to be born anew through the beliefs and practices of our ancestors who knew that to be Black was to be holy. “Let Black be synonymous with glory,” she says in a voiceover early in the film.     1 When Mars and Venus Collide: The Struggle for Power and Respect in Romance as told by The Carters In the wake of the recent public reconciliation of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s marriage in their latest joint project, Everything is Love, we are reminded yet again of the cultural supremacy of The ​ ​ Carters as they continue to place themselves as the ‘power couple’ we can base our understandings of love and relationships upon. While this current project lives on a cloud of renewed trust through forgiveness, it is still fresh in our mind the first gauntlet that was thrown by Beyonce through her hallmark Lemonade project, ​ ​ and its effect on our perception of The Carters and their place in our culture. Renowned as an aesthetic and cultural tour de force, Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade is an ​ ​ exposition of the emotional hardships women undergo in romantic relationships. The pop culture relevance of Lemonade is rooted in its ability to give rhetorical form to the experiences of ​ ​ women in relationships, thus validating and supporting these experiences. Specifically, Beyoncé shows the struggle for power and respect that often takes place in heterosexual romantic relationships is rooted in a patriarchal model of love and romance. In this article I briefly analyze several poems from Lemonade that most saliently display its ​ ​ themes of love, womanhood, and the struggle for power and respect in relationships. To supplement my analysis I reference Bell Hooks’s book, All About Love, because of its explicit ​ ​ discussion of the shifting state of power within male/female romantic relationships.

The purpose of this essay is to provide a close reading of the poetry, music, lyrics and visuals in four sections from Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade (2016). To this end, I have chosen what I believe are the most representative sections of Lemonade together with their respective songs. Thus, I focus on the song “Hold Up” from Denial; “Daddy Lessons” from Accountability, “Freedom” from Hope, and “Formation,” where Beyoncé addresses topics such as infidelity, racism, women’s representation, and racism and inequality. I analyse these topics through a close-reading and interpretation of Warsan Shire’s poetry (a source of inspiration), as well as Beyoncé’s own music, lyrics, and imagery. From this analysis, it is safe to say that Lemonade is a relevant work of art that will perdure in time, since it highlights positive representations of African-Americans, at the same time Beyoncé critically denounces the current racial unrest lived in the USA.
