We prefer to achieve the high- est level by composing original music, creating unique arrangements, and playing inventively as well as passionately. In fact, it really is jazz with a dynamic orchestral sound, with a clas- sic strength in which each musician is also a brilliant soloist. Call it an “orchestrated passion for jazz” that incites the band to create world-class music. Who comes to play with the orchestra depends on the project. In addition to the band’s own productions, we work with well- known musicians from across the world. In that way, the orchestra has established a reputation at home and on relevant jazz stages abroad. Founded in 1993 by Frank Vaganée, Serge Plume, Marc Godfroid, and Bo van der Werf, the orchestra has been recognized and subsi- dized by the Flemish Government since 1999. The band is orchestra in residence at Flagey in Brussels and a member of the European Music Circle. The orchestra has performed with Philip Catherine, Bert Joris, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Tutu Puoane, Brussels Philharmonic, David Linx, and Richard Galliano. The orchestra has also collaborated with Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Gianluigi Trovesi, Gustavo Bergalli, Norma Winstone, McCoy Tyner, Maria João, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Perico Sambeat, Toots Thielemans, and others. These orchestra projects have received international acclaim: • 2011 South African Music Award, in the category Best Traditional Jazz Album, for Mama Africa. • 2011 Zilveren Griffel for audiobook Vliegen tot de hemel, for which the orchestra composed and performed the original soundtrack. • 2011–2012 Golden Globe, BAFTA, César, and Academy Award for the soundtrack of The Artist. • In December 2013 the orchestra topped off its anniversary year with two Grammy Award nominations for its album Wild Beauty fea- turing Joe Lovano.
