Dear Visitor,

In recent years Bridport has become known as the leading arts community in the West Country and our annual Open Studios event celebrates this vibrant Visual Arts Scene over the 10 days leading up to the Launch Night! August Bank Holiday weekend. Follow the six maps in this Guide to over 70 artists in dozens of studios, galleries and even some artists’ homes. We encourage you to explore the great wealth of talent in the towns, villages and hamlets across West Dorset, where you’ll find a wide variety of art on display, from well-known names to emerging artists and keen newcomers. Whatever your taste in art, we're sure you'll find something to enjoy – whether it’s for investment, pleasure or simply to support our talented artists.

Open Studio events offer a rare opportunity for the public to visit artists’ studios and workplaces (which are usually private). Please feel free to talk to the artists about their creative process and enjoy their most recent work. Most artists will have original works for sale, as well as cards and prints.

Please join us for the Launch of Bridport & West Dorset Open Studios from 6 - 9pm on Wednesday 19 August at the Bridport Arts Centre! Meet the artists and enjoy the 'Six by Nine' exhibition of small works in the Café & Foyer Galleries – Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm, until 12 September. Open Studios Launch Night With many thanks to our Sponsors, Yarn Magazine. and 'Six by Nine' exhibition Wed 19 August, 6 - 9pm Bridport Arts Centre 9 South Street, DT6 3NR

5 Billie Willcocks, Brian Cocks & Mike Jackson Painting Billie: Sense of place and natural forms are what inspire me. The textural effects of time and weather creating their own compositions encourage me to collect raw material and let them create a cameo of the wild landscape. I do not plan a piece – it just evolves. Brian: Most of the paintings exhibited are concerned with light and colour – either with tree forms appearing to glow with an inner light or varying effects of light on the sea, sky and land along the Jurassic coast. Others are derived from breaking waves on the shingle beach. Mike: Atmospheric landscape paintings which explore the effect of the elements and light on the Dorset countryside and coastline. They provide a contrast to other more abstract works derived from natural forms and patterns. The development of these is subject to alterations, stress marks and re-working.

Specifically, the object as artefact situated in this landscape. I explore ideas of the lost, the found, the concealed and the revealed. Greta: Working mostly in cut and welded steel I am showing a selection of small steel bird sculptures. Bronagh: Bringing to life a vision of nature through the use of either stone or wood, using traditional techniques of chisel and hammer to create a classical form with a contemporary undertone. Claire: Working in silver and gold, preferably recycled, her work is inspired by the sea. She incorporates beach combed finds, including sea glass, pottery and pebbles in her work. Each piece is individual, tactile and quirky. She welcomes commissions using clients' found treasures to make beautiful bespoke pieces.

26 John Boyd, Marion Taylor & Charlotte Miller Various Media / Acrylic and Gouache / Painting, Oil and Acrylic John: Painting for me is quite a challenge, demanding great self-discipline. I enjoy the process of seeking out an image, making sketches/photographs in the landscape and experimenting in my studio with various media. It is most satisfying to see a painting come to life from a blank white surface. Marion: Her well known, colourful depictions of Colmer’s Hill and other local landscapes can be seen on display in her studio at St. Michael’s. Also Still Life paintings, Giclee Prints, cards and signed copies of Marion’s book Colmer’s Hill, One Artist’s Obsession. Charlotte: Inspired by the beautiful landscape of West Dorset, my work often portrays the hidden valleys and almost vertical hills beneath the ancient Hill Fort of Eggarden. Simple line sketches and memorised images then become larger semi-abstract paintings on canvas and paper within the studio.
