Even in death in a city crammed with the rich and famous, everyone wanted to be near Diamond Jim. When he lived they copied what he wore, dined where he dined, and ate what he ate. Those trying to keep up included Pearl Jim Murray, a Montana miner who kept pockets filled with hundreds of thou- sands of dollars’ worth of loose pearls, the “Pittsburgh Million- aires” who had gotten rich when Andrew Carnegie sold his steel business to J. P. Morgan, and the patrons of a Broadway restaurant described by its proprietor as “a cathedral of froth, national museum of habits, bourse of gossip, the clearing house of rumors, and the supreme court of triviality, where the who’s who went to learn the what’s what.” “He was an odd character,” observed restaurateur George Rector. “His name was derived from his jewelry, and when 1 cintro.qxd 6/23/01 2:59 PM Page 2 2 DIAMOND JIM BRADY Diamond Jim had all his illumination in place, he looked like an excursion steamer at twilight. He had powerful diamonds in his shirt front that cast beams strong enough to sunburn an unwary pedestrian. He had diamonds in his cuffs and in sus- pender buttons fore and aft. He wore diamonds on his fingers and there was a rumor that he had diamond bridge work.” When Rector once chided Jim for this excessive display of gems, Jim replied, “Them as has ’em wears ’em.” Six months after Jim’s funeral, the Columbia Trust Company of New York put up for unrestricted public auction at the Madi- son Square galleries of the American Art Association “costly furnishings and embellishments” accumulated by the most aston- ishing and engaging personality of that time. The illustrated catalog listed thousands of items in 1,748 groupings of ivories, bronzes, marbles, porcelains, “bijouterie,” armor, prints, textiles, silver and plated ware, china, glassware, linen and cushions, fur- niture, billiard and other sporting games and sporting pictures, Oriental carpets, Japanese and Austrian objêts d’art, and minia- tures of the world’s most famous actresses. Not on the selling block was more than $2 million worth of adornments that had been the basis of the era’s most famous nickname. Had Dia- mond Jim’s gem-encrusted pins been offered for bidding at one item a day, the sale would have taken a month. The jewels had been the emblem of a singular individual who fashioned him- self into the brash symbol of plush years that historians named the Gilded Age. In the words of one student of the era, Jim was a walking jewelry store, always surrounded by the most beauti- ful women on earth. He was also the unquestioned biggest eater. A typical lunch consisted of two lobsters, deviled crabs, clams, oysters, and beef. He finished with several whole pies. This lasted him until dinner at four-thirty. That meal began with a couple of dozen oysters, six crabs, and bowls of green turtle soup. On such outings he limited his display of diamonds on the advice of police, who feared he might be an easy target for pickpockets. a sirloin steak, two servings of terrapin, and a variety of vege- tables. Desserts were pastries and perhaps a five-pound box of candy. Because Jim did not partake of alcohol, all this was washed down with carafe after carafe of orange juice. When he sat down for a meal he tucked his napkin into his shirt collar because one placed on his knee would have been useless under his big belly. Eating ended when the gap had been closed. “How he ate!” George Rector recalled. “He loved to be sur- rounded by handsome men and beautiful women at the table, and it was no unusual thing for us to lay covers for eight or ten guests of Mr. Brady. If they all kept their appointments, fine! If but two or three were able to be present, fine! And if nobody showed up but Diamond Jim, fine! Mr. Brady proceeded gravely to eat the ten dinners himself.” Rector once pronounced Jim “the best twenty-five customers I ever had.” No one had been Jim’s eating companion more frequently than the area’s most famous actress. Known to one and all as the American Beauty, Lillian Russell had been so lavishly show- ered with jewelry by Jim that a latter-day writer called them a duet in diamonds. Author John Burke wrote, “Fleshly arm in arm, plump shoulder to shoulder, they toddled together into the social history of their time.” During the presidencies of Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Har- rison, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt, Diamond Jim had been a portly prince. He sat ringside for boxing bouts featuring his friend John L. Sullivan. He found himself in the inner circle of the horsey set at Saratoga Springs. He was a big player on Wall Street and in the boardrooms of the country’s railroad tycoons. He’d hobnobbed with everyone in the Gay Nineties, from robber barons to chorus girls, and picked up the tab. The first automobile to scare the horses on the streets of 1890s New York had been his. He attended theatrical first nights of Weber and Fields, Oscar Hammerstein, and Florenz Ziegfeld. Before and after each of these shows he was a regular at Rec- tor’s, Tony Pastor’s, Delmonico’s, and all the “lobster palaces” of Manhattan. Lucius Beebe, the chronicler and arbiter of good food and where it could be found in New York, observed, “The lobster- palace set entered into the historic record.

Consequently, when Dan’s second son was born on the twelfth of August, the beer flowed freely. Presently the parish priest was informed that the boy he would be called on to bap- tize had been named after the Democratic nominee for presi- dent of the United States. If the father of the newborn had his way, James Buchanan Brady and his older brother (their father’s namesake) would follow him in the saloon business. The first years of Jim’s life, therefore, were filled with the voices of hardworking, hard- drinking, mostly Irish longshoremen and teamsters who lived nearby. They earned their wages from the ships whose masts resembled a leaf-bare forest on the edge of the Hudson River that reached from the tip of Manhattan north to the human wasteland of spirit-crushing tenements called Hell’s Kitchen. A dozen years before Jim was born, England’s most famous author, Charles Dickens, had toured the New York waterfront and found the bowsprits of hundreds of ships stretching across the waterside streets and almost thrusting themselves into the 7 8 DIAMOND JIM BRADY windows of adjacent buildings.

    Cunningham The Rajah of the Great White Way: The Self-Made Man, Conspicuous Consumption, and Competitive Masculinity in Gilded Age New York City TIM CUNNINGHAM A larger-than-life figure in the raucous, display-oriented social world of Gilded Age New York, James Buchanan “Diamond Jim” Brady was a man of prodigious appetites. Famed for his realization of the American Dream, his penchant for flashy displays of diamonds, and his animalistic appetite for almost unimaginable quantities of food, Brady conveyed a specific competitive masculinity in a time of male self-mastery and restraint – a competitive masculinity inextricably bound to questions of economic class, wealth display, and conspicuous consumption. This article critically examines aspects of Brady’s embodied gender presentation, and shines a light on the wider, gendered performance of Gilded Age, leisure class masculinity by a new class of ‘robber barons,’ and nouveau riche in turn-of-the-century New York City. By all accounts, James Buchanan “Diamond Jim” Brady was a man of prodigious appetites. A prolific patron of Broadway theater, a self-made entrepreneurial millionaire, a daily consumer of almost unimaginable quantities of food, a man never found without company of the most beautiful women of his age or his eponymous adornment of choice – Jim Brady epitomized large-living masculinity in the heyday of American conspicuous consumption. The dawn of the twentieth century saw masculinity in a time of flux: the rise of industrial capitalism, women’s suffrage and wealth divisions began to restructure society and class, and gave rise to disparate ideas and anxieties around manhood and maleness.

To the newer generation of the cinema public there is interest in comparing the old-time screen stones with the modem ones. “ ” To be technically correct, revival is not the right word, for the old favourites are re-made, but in the majority of cases the original film is not altered to any great extent so far as the story is concerned, though the introduction of spoken dialogue must necessarily be more expensive them that recorded by the printed sub-title of the silent picture. On the whole, the re-making of popular pictures is done so well that it is deserving of the highest praise, but there is one criticism I have to make. I think it is a great mistake to alter the original title. Take a person who saw the original film passing by a cinema which is showing a revival under a new title. There is nothing to indicate that this is a new version of an old favourite, and such a person might well walk on to another cinema, missing what would have been a real treat.

In 2015, Chinaʼs Anbang Insurance Group bought the Waldorf Astoria for nearly $2 billion from Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. Anbang has just closed the hotel for a complete makeover involving conversion of hundreds of guestrooms into privately-owned condominiums. In my book “Hotel Mavens: Lucius M. Boomer, George C. Boldt and Oscar of the Waldorf” (AuthorHouse 2014), I tell the fascinating story of the construction of the new Waldorf-Astoria from 1929-1931, the hoteliers who created it, the singular design and the remarkable guest list. On December 20, 1928, the Boomer-duPont Properties Corporation announced that the original Waldorf-Astoria (designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh) on Fifth Avenue and Thirty-Fourth Street would be demolished. They sold the hotel to real estate developers for $13.5 million to construct the Empire State Building and Boomer was able to obtain the rights to the name Waldorf-Astoria for the payment of one dollar. The new Waldorf-Astoria was to be built on an entire block leased from the New York Central Railroad between Park and Lexington Avenues between Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Streets. Even before the original Waldorf-Astoria closed down for demolition, Lucius Boomer asked the famous architectural firm of Schultze & Weaver to begin planning a new, larger Waldorf-Astoria.
