Burr and August Bruno, from Original Designs, Sketches and Photographs harrisburg, pa. James M. Place, Publisher 1890 Copyrighted, JAMES M. PLACE, 1889. INTRODUCTION A book on such a subject, written to give a plain statement of facts and do something for a good cause, could have no intro- duction better than this letter from one of the eminent divines of the age : 57 West Forty-Sixth Street, New York, Nov. 4, 18S9. Esq., Harrisburg, Pa. J. J. McLaurin, My Dear Sir ; I see by Governor Beaver's letter to the publisher that you propose to write a book on the Johnstown Flood. It should be done at once, while the scenes and incidents of those dreadful days are fresh and unfaded in our minds. Let the story of the awful calamity be put into enduring type for future gene- rations. It ranks among the great calamities of the world and deserves a place in History.

REENGAGING BLUES NARRATIVES: ALAN LOMAX, JELLY ROLL MORTON AND W.C. HANDY By Vic Hobson A dissertation submitted to the School of Music, In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of East Anglia (March 2008) Copyright 2008 All rights reserved © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author’s prior, written consent. i Acknowledgments This for me has been a voyage of discovery and I count myself fortunate to have enjoyed the process. This has been due, in no small part, to the support, help and encouragement that I have received along the way. People who, in the early days of my research, had been only names on the covers of books are now real; all have been helpful, most have been enthusiastic and some I now count as friends. The School of Music at the University of East Anglia is a small school in a rapidly expanding university which was led for many years by David Chadd who sadly died before the completion of this work. Fortunately the foundations he laid are secure and I have benefited from the knowledge and experience of all of the staff of the school, in particular my supervisor Jonathan Impett. Among Jonathan’s contributions, above and beyond the normal duties of a PhD supervisor is to have shown faith in a thesis that initially must have seemed rather unlikely.

RCA Discography Part 57 - By David Edwards, Mike Callahan, and Patrice Eyries. © 2018 by Mike Callahan RCA Camden Label Discography The RCA Camden label was started in 1953 as a budget label. It was named after Camden New Jersey which was the manufacturing and distribution center of RCA Victor records. Much of the material released by Camden were reissues of albums released by RCA Victor, usually with a few less songs. Initially the label was used for classical releases but soon started releasing popular, country and comedy albums. Albums released by Camden included ones released by RCA of Canada using the same numbering system. These RCA of Canada albums were only distributed in Canada and were not listed in the Schwann catalogs. UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA GRADUATE COLLEGE WILLY LEY, THE SCIENCE WRITERS, AND THE POPULAR REENCHANTMENT OF SCIENCE A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By JARED S. BUSS Norman, Oklahoma 2014 WILLY LEY, THE SCIENCE WRITERS, AND THE POPULAR REENCHANTMENT OF SCIENCE A DISSERTATION APPROVED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY OF SCIENCE BY ___________________________ Dr. Hunter Heyck, Chair ___________________________ Dr. Katherine Pandora ___________________________ Dr. Joann Palmeri ___________________________ Dr. Stephen Weldon ___________________________ Dr. Benjamin Alpers © Copyright by JARED S. BUSS 2014 All Rights Reserved. Acknowledgements Many helpful scholars have guided this dissertation. Hunter Heyck has provided advice and encouragement as the project matured from a collection of primary sources into a biography. Katherine Pandora’s scholarship and perspectives have also contributed to this work in remarkable ways. Additionally, Michael Neufeld has spent many years providing guidance, advice, and sources. I would also like to thank committee members Joann Palmeri, Benjamin Alpers, and Stephen Weldon for their helpful comments and reactions. This project owes a special thanks to Sandra and Xenia Ley. As the daughters of Willy Ley, they shared memories and reflections. In particular, I wish to thank Sandra for many long telephone interviews. Her personal stories and memories helped to reassure me that I understood her father and his personality. Although this biography focuses on Ley’s professional and public activities, I hope that this biography accurately reflects his personality. I would also like to thank other authors, researchers, and archivists. William H. Patterson provided much assistance in navigating the Heinlein Archives and interpreting key documents.
