History: WALK AMONG THE ECHOES Three major gold strikes spawned the influx of settlers to Southwest Montana in the 1860s, followed by a silver boom and then the discovery of copper in the 1880s. But as the ore ran out or prices fell, most of those early settlements became ghostly shells of their glory days.

Today, Southwest Montana is beloved for different treasures. Well-preserved ghost towns offer precious windows into 19th-century life. Last Chance Gulch would be the only gold strike to evolve into a viable town — Montana’s capital city, Helena. Butte’s sprawling historic district also lives on, giving vivid testimony to the wealth of the Copper Kings and the diverse cultures that converged in this mountain town.

To come here is to walk among the echoes of pickaxes on stone, of traditional native drumming, of the clatter of spurs. Listen closely and you will hear a history that’s as epic as the scenery.

Soft Adventure: CONNECT TO NATURE’S PULSE You know the experience: You arrive home from your vacation exhausted and (still) feeling like you need a vacation. It doesn’t have to be that way. When you come to Southwest Montana, you can lose yourself in profound quietude right along the roadside. You can while away the days on the banks of a babbling creek, panning for gold and watching bald eagles ride thermals as they fish. You can knock around a golf ball in the foothills of the Continental Divide, the deer and beavers your only spectators. Or you can simply sit, immersed in the restorative mineral waters of one of the region’s natural hot springs.

Soft adventure in Southwest Montana means connecting to nature’s pulse, slowing your pace, and fully experiencing this miraculous place. You may find you don’t ever want to leave; but at least you will feel rejuvenated when you get back home.
