We are therefore tempted to believe the nationalist rhetoric that accompanied many urban projects of the early 20th century. Taking the example of Marcello Piacentini, the most successful architect in Italy during the dictatorship of Mussolini, the article traces how international trends in civic design and urban planning affected the architect’s work. The article aims to show that architectural and urban form cannot be taken as genuinely national – whether or not it may be called “Italian” or “fascist”. Concepts and forms underwent a versatile transformation in history, were adapted to specific needs and changed their meaning according to the new context. The challenge is to understand why certain forms are chosen in a specific case and how they were used to create displays that offer new modes of interpretation. The birth of town planning as an architectural discipline When Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960) began his career at the turn of the 20th century, urban design as a profession for architects was a very young discipline. -

One of the first trips that Muirhead Bone made outside Britain was a long stay of two years - from October 1910 to October 1912 – in central and northern Italy, accompanied by his wife Gertrude and their children. After spending several weeks in Florence, the Bone family settled in Rome in the early months of 1911, and from October 1911 lived in a flat overlooking the Piazza del Popolo. During his time in Italy Bone produced thirty-two copper plates and numerous fine drawings, several of which were sent from Italy to London and Glasgow to be sold by his dealers. A number of Bone’s drawings of Italy were exhibited at the Colnaghi and Obach gallery in London in 1914, to very positive reviews. The present sheet depicts part of the outer façade of the city gate known as the Porta del Popolo, a section part of the Aurelian Walls encircling the city of Rome. The gate was the main entrance to Rome from the Via Flaminia and the north, and was used by most travellers arriving into the city for the first time. Built by Pope Sixtus IV for the Jubilee year of 1475, the Porta del Popolo was remodelled in the 16th century under Pope Pius IV. The Pope had asked Michelangelo to design the new outer façade of the Porta, but the elderly artist passed the commission on to the architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio, who completed the work between 1562 and 1565. -

The location of the centers and infrastructures of such services is a subsequent question (we would say "secondary" if with this adjective is meant not inferiority in importance, but rather a temporal and conceptual subordination). The polycentrism supported here in Rome means, first of all, a theoretical assignation of the potentiality of the catchment area of the Roman system to respective "units" of service that locationally assume the 1 role of realizing the objectives, reasserted by everybody numerous times of: integrating functions, improving accessibility, distances, traveling times, not exceeding the thresholds that have been indicated as "overloading". #iorestoacasa con il MAXXI Architettura 1/5 Quartiere Flaminio Come tutte le città che hanno una lunga storia, Roma è il risultato della stratificazione di anni e anni di costruzioni, demolizioni e ricostruzioni; strato dopo strato ognuno dei quartieri che la compongono è diventato quello che ci appare adesso. Il quartiere in cui sorge il MAXXI è detto quartiere Flaminio perché si sviluppa lungo l’antica via Flaminia che in epoca romana collegava Porta del Popolo con l’antico Ponte Milvio. Poiché questa strada attraversava una distesa di campi periodicamente inondati dal fiume Tevere, in questo quartiere non era mai stato costruito nessun insediamento fino ai primi anni del ‘900, quando iniziarono a comparire i primi fabbricati industriali usati più avanti come caserme militari. Nel 1960, anno dei Giochi Olimpici, vengono costruiti il Palazzetto dello Sport, lo Stadio Flaminio e il Villaggio Olimpico, per ospitare gli atleti provenienti da tutto il mondo. Nel 1994 il quartiere Flaminio affronta una nuova sfida con la costruzione dell’Auditorium Parco della Musica, con i tre volumi delle sale da concerto disposti attorno alla grande cavea e un giardino in quota per godere del verde anche in piena città. Nel 1998 viene bandito il concorso per riqualificare una parte delle caserme militari ormai in disuso; nasce così il Centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee che oggi conosciamo come museo MAXXI. Nel 2011, l’ultimo passo nell’espansione del quartiere è la costruzione del Ponte della musica per collegare via Guido Reni - su cui affaccia l’attuale caffetteria del museo - all’altra sponda del Tevere; un ponte leggero, in acciaio e legno, progettato per essere attraversato solo da mezzi pubblici, pedoni e biciclette. -

Rethinking the city through the museums of contemporary art - the case of the MAXXI in Rome Extended abstract Gaspar Crespi Dissertation for the Master degree in Architecture Advisor: Prof. Dr. Helena Barranha Co-Advisor: Prof. Dr. Paola Guarini November 2016 1 Abstract This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the case of the MAXXI, located in Flaminio, Rome, and it is integrated in the research area of Museum Architecture. As its name suggests, the Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo appears as a reference to the contemporary art museography, establishing a case study of wide potential, and that represents a great challenge for the art and for the city encompasses it. Founded in 2010 and designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, despite being a recent project is an important landmark. In this sense, the thesis aims at the discussion and interpretation of the impact of museum and to explore its importance to Rome, discussing how the MAXXI may constitute an integrated model for this type of equipments. Keywords: MAXXI, Rome, museum of contemporary art, urban revitalization, Zaha Hadid Contemporary art museum architecture and the city The true meaning of the modern museum was only established at the end of the 18th century, after the French Revolution in 1789, which encompassed the progressive view that the art was destined to the people. That is how begins, in the 19th century, the development of the architecture of museums, influenced by the ideas of Jean-Nicolas- Louis Durand (1760-1834) and by the Altes Museum (1830) of Berlin. The Museum "is born within the city, in the large monumental buildings of the past: the palace and the temple", assuming a "prominent location within the bourgeois town", linked to "areas of high political and social representation" (Lorente & Almazán, 2003: 110). -

Premise Facing issues that interact with the socio cultural aspects deeply rooted in the cities history is speaking of Public Art in Italy and Rome. The city cannot be dissociated by its evident historic roots or by the cultural heritage on which the cities art is based upon. Indeed the role of architecture and urban planning, at the core of the territories development in the aftermath of the war, cannot be underestimated. Urban art together with the street art and it’s artists is a western overseas heritage, nevertheless it has now days become part of us and our daily life, changing the citizens approach to art. Paintings and sculptures overwhelm museums and invade the streets where people accept and identify art as an enrichment of their souls and the environment. Indeed Rome and its history have disseminated Public Art in the world, the commonplaces of the city show a citizens day to day approach to art. 2. Historic Public Art The roman citizen does not notice the art that surrounds him, unless pointed out. Historic Public Art present in the central streets of Rome such as classic obelisks, horse shape statues and fountains witness the bond between the artistic development and the urban development of the city which spreads innovation.
