The facts contained in Scott's paper are of value at the present time to those in search of information concerning the early history of the south-western portion of Tasmania, and as in years to come information may be desired concerning the condition of the south-western regi-on half a century after Scott's account was written, the writer desires to place on record certain brief general obser vations concerning this interesting area. The remarks made in the present instance are the out come of two brief visits to this area. In January, 1926, I visited the South Coast as far as New Harbour in my own yacht Telopea. Again, in January, 1927, at the kind invi tation of Mr. M. R. Freney, I visited the S-outh C-oast and Port Davey in the ketch Len'IUL (S. Purdon, Skipper). Messrs. P. B. Nye and F. Blake of the Mines Department were also members of this latter excursion. During the recent visit to this area we landed at Cox Bight, and camped for some days before walking across and rejoining our !boat at Port Davey. -

However, many islands remain data-poor especially for invertebrate fauna, and non-vascular flora, and information sources are dispersed across numerous platforms. While more than 90% of Tasmania’s offshore islands are statutory reserves, many are impacted by a range of disturbances, particularly invasive species with no decision-making framework in place to prioritise their management. This paper synthesises the significant contribution offshore islands make to Tasmania’s land-based natural assets and identifies gaps and deficiencies hampering their protection. A continuing focus on detailed gap-filling surveys aided by partnership restoration programs and collaborative national forums must be strengthened if we are to capitalise on the conservation benefits islands provide in the face of rapidly changing environmental conditions and pressure for future use. -

Green and J.L. Rainbird Queen VICtoria Museum, Launceston ABSTRACT Records of lizards and snakes from 110 islands within the pOlitical boundaries of Tasmania are summarised. Dates, literature, references and materials collected are given, together with some comments on numerical status and breeding conditions. INTRODUCTION Very little has been published on the distribution of reptiles which occur on the smaller islands around Tasmania. MacKay (1955) gave some notes on a collection of reptiles from the Furneaux Islands. Rawlinson (1967) listed and discussed records of 13 species from the Furneaux Group and 10 species from King Island. Green (1969) recorded 12 species from Flinders Island and Mt Chappell Island and Green and McGarvie (1971) recorded 9 spedes from King Island following fauna surveys In both locations. Rawlinson (1974) listed 15 species as occurring on the Tasmanian mainland, 12 on islands in the Furneaux Group and 9 on King Island. Hutchinson et al. (1989) gave some known populations of Pseudemoia pretiosa on islands off the southern coast, and haphazard and opportunistic collecting has produced occasional records from various small islands over the years. In 1984 Nigel Brothers, a field biologist with the Tasmanian Department of Environment and Parks, Wildlife and Heritage, commenced a programme designed to gain a greater knowledge of the small and uninhabited isrands around Tasmania. The survey Involved landing on rocks and small islands which might support vegetation and fauna and to record observations and collect specimens. -

October 2000 ABSTRACT Increasing exploitation of pelagic fish populations worldwide has often resulted in overfishing and the collapse of commercial fisheries and associated serious declines in many marine predator populations, including seabirds. These events higMight the competing demands for limited marine resources. Recent emphasis for the ecologically- sustainable management of commercial fisheries has stimulated attempts to manage fisheries by incorporating knowledge of trophic interactions and ecosystem functioning, known as ecosystem-based fisheries management. Seabirds are often highly visible, wide-ranging upper trophic level consumers that aggregate in areas of increased ocean productivity and therefore be used as natural monitors of marine environmental conditions. Further, many seabirds commonly fed on commercially-exploited fish stocks (often targeting prey of similar size). In this study, the population dynamics of Australasian gannets {Moms serrator) breeding in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, is investigated and competition between gannets and commercial fisheries is determined. In addition, the potential use of seabird reproductive and population parameters as indicators of the abundance of commercially exploited fish stocks, and pelagic conditions generally, is assessed. -
Approved Conservation Advice for Niveoscincus Palfreymani (Pedra Branca Skink)
This Conservation Advice was approved by the Minister on 29 Apr 2014 Approved Conservation Advice for Niveoscincus palfreymani (Pedra Branca skink) (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Niveoscincus palfreymani (Pedra Branca skink), Family Scincidae, also known as the red- throated skink, is a moderately large and strongly built skink with well-developed limbs, a stout tail and smooth dorsal scales. The skinks vary in the intensity of colour and patterning. Adults can be grey, green or glossy black. Juveniles are light-tan, darkening on maturity. The head is variegated and spotted. A thin, light-coloured, dorso-lateral stripe exists in some specimens. There is a mid-lateral line apparent from behind the eye to the hind leg and below this the flanks are dark with scattered pale or bronze flecks. The ventral surface is grey with a tan to reddish tone. The adult males and females are similar in size with a mean snout–vent length of 88 mm and a mass of 17.7 g (Brothers and Pemberton, 1997). This species was previously known as Pseudomoia palfreymani (Cogger, 2000). Conservation Status The Pedra Branca skink is listed as vulnerable. This species is eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as vulnerable under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth).
