VOLTAIRE AND ROUSSEAU: HUMANISTS AND HUMANITARIANS IN CONFLICT by Virgil W Topazio Whether judged as men, philosophers, or writers, it would be difficult to imagine two persons more different than Voltaire and Rousseau, yet they were both literary giants of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment who believed they had devoted most of their adult lives to the cause of political and moral freedom and justice. Voltaire was the beneficiary of a formal classical education that served as a solid base to his broad cultural background and wide reading. He un- abashedly enjoyed the flourishing eighteenth-century salon life with its pre- mium on wit, conversational skills, and intellect. And despite his capacities for strong emotions, his manner of coping with the overriding problen~of injustice was through the exercise of reason and intellect. Theodore Bester- man informs us in his recent biography of Voltaire: "The truth is that this nlost profound conviction (i.e., love of justice) was the fruit of Voltaire's reason, but it was expressed with all the deepest passions of his being.. Indeed, Voltaire was utterly a man of the mind."' Rousseau, on the other hand, possessed neither the classical education nor the broad systematic learning of Voltaire, though he was an unusually well- read autodidact in the eyes of Marguerite Reichenburg.' What is more important, Rousseau was by nature much more introverted than his extra- verted contenlporary, lacked Voltaire's conversational skills and sharp wit, and what is more, notwithstanding his protestations, was almost totally devoid of a sense of humor. He himself would probably have admitted that in his youth he had sold his soul to a Mephistophelian Paris. -

Così accade alla poesia e alla pittura di Dante Gabriel (1828-1882) e di Christi- na Rossetti (1830-1894), oggi parte dell’Olimpo dell’arte inglese e del mondo. Uno dei loro nonni ebbe origine toscana. Gaetano Polidori (1764-1853), medi- co e poeta, nacque a Bientina, che oggi lo ricorda nel nome della sua biblioteca pubblica. Nel 1785 divenne segretario di Vittorio Alfieri, appena stabilitosi a Pisa; poi, lasciato il commediografo, si recò a Londra dove sposò un’istitutrice privata ed ebbe quattro figli e quattro figlie. Il maggiore, John William Polidori, fu medico personale di lord Byron e autore della prima storia di vampiri in lingua inglese. La figlia Frances sposò l’esule abruzzese Gabriele Rossetti, al quale Polidori aveva aperto la sua ricca biblioteca per la continuazione degli studi danteschi, e dette alla luce i figli Maria Francesca, Dante Gabriel, William Michael e Christina Rossetti. Il nonno sostenne gli studi e le opere dei nipoti. Dante Gabriel e Christina ebbero per lui grande affetto e riconoscenza. E se le sue opere rimangono poco note, forse perché troppo “settecentesche”, dovunque e pure nel web appaiono le pitture del nipote e della Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti, l’associazione di ispirazione simbolista che promosse nel 1848. Sono splendidi dipinti e facil- mente riconoscibili. La poesia di Christina fu lo specchio della sua intelligenza e grande sensibi- lità religiosa. -
Introduction
INTRODUCTION [T]he new poetry seemed to have achieved no progress in the eye of the public since the experiment of The Germ in 1850. Then at last came Christina Rossetti with her brilliant, fantastic, and profoundly original volume of Goblin Market in 1862, and achieved the earliest popular success for Pre-Raphaelite poetry. Swinburne never failed to recognize the priority of Christina; he used to call her the Jael who led their host to victory.1 iterary scholars and the reading public have long appreciated Christina Rossetti’s “bril- liant, fantastic, and profoundly original” poetry. Over the last twenty-five years, renewed Linterest in women writers and in the pre-Raphaelite movement has spurred a full-scale reassessment of Rossetti’s work that has firmly established her status as a major Victorian poet. Rossetti’s writing in other genres — including short fiction, essays, and devotional writing have also attracted considerable scholarly attention. The reevaluation of Rossetti’s work has yielded an abundance of new and important scholarship, including a critical edition of Rossetti’s po- ems by Rebecca Crump (1979-1990), biographies by Georgina Battiscombe (1981), Kathleen Jones (1991) and Jan Marsh (1995), numerous critical studies including the important early es- say collection The Achievement of Christina Rossetti (1988), and an edition of Rossetti’s letters by Antony Harrison (1997-2004). Scholarly efforts to understand Christina Rossetti within her contemporary context have also flourished, including any number of critical and biographical studies of the Rossetti family (and of Christina’s role and relationships within it), as well as wider considerations of Christina’s place within the pre-Raphaelite movement, Victorian women’s writ- ing, writing for children, and Victorian religious and devotional literature. -

1 BIOGRAPHY OF SISMONDI HELMUT O. PAPPE I. Jean Charles Léonard Simonde was born on the 9th May 1773 into a Genevan family. In later life he changed his family to de Sismondi after an old Pisan aristocratic family from which he believed the Simondis to be descended. Charles’s parents were the pasteur Gèdèon François Simonde and his wife Henriette Ester Gabriele Girodz; a sister, Sara, called Serina by the family and her friends, saw the light of day two years later. The families of both parents were du haut the Simondes being on the borderline between nobility and upper bourgeoisie, the Girodz being members of the well-to-do upper bourgeoisie. Both the Simondes and the Girodz had come to Geneva as members of the second éimgration after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, that is, both families were Protestant fugitives from religious persecution in France. The Girodz had come to Geneva from Chàlons-sur-Saône in 1689. Henriette’s father, Pierre Girodz, became a successful and highly respected businessman engaged in various commercial enterprises connected with the watchmaking trade. He owned a substantial town house close to the cathedral in the Bourg-de-Four and an imposing country seat ‘Tourant’ at Chênes, both to be the residences of Sismondi after his return from exile in Italy. On the occasion of the marriage of his daughter on the 12th January 1770 Pierre Girodz was able to give her a dowry his town house worth 30,000 Livres as well as 10,000 Livres in cash and 2,000 Livres worth of jewellery. -

RARE ENGLISH INCUNABLE TITLE PAGE, WITH A LARGE WOODCUT, of William Caxton’s translation of the Lives of the Holy Fathers: printed by Wynkyn de Worde, assistant and successor of Caxton, England’s first printer. One of Wynkyn’s earliest woodcuts, and a pioneering use of a large woodcut on a title page. Probably originally from Holland, Wynkyn de Worde met Caxton in Cologne in 1470, and accompanied him back to England in 1475. He then worked in Caxton’s printing shop in Westminster until Caxton died in 1492, at which point Wynkyn took over the business. -

THE LOOKING-GLASS WORLD Mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite Painting, 1850-1915 TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I Claire Elizabeth Yearwood Ph.D. University of York History of Art October 2014 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite painting as a significant motif that ultimately contributes to the on-going discussion surrounding the problematic PRB label. With varying stylistic objectives that often appear contradictory, as well as the disbandment of the original Brotherhood a few short years after it formed, defining ‘Pre-Raphaelite’ as a style remains an intriguing puzzle. In spite of recurring frequently in the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly in those by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, the mirror has not been thoroughly investigated before. Instead, the use of the mirror is typically mentioned briefly within the larger structure of analysis and most often referred to as a quotation of Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) or as a symbol of vanity without giving further thought to the connotations of the mirror as a distinguishing mark of the movement. I argue for an analysis of the mirror both within the context of iconographic exchange between the original leaders and their later associates and followers, and also that of nineteenth- century glass production. The Pre-Raphaelite use of the mirror establishes a complex iconography that effectively remytholgises an industrial object, conflates contradictory elements of past and present, spiritual and physical, and contributes to a specific artistic dialogue between the disparate strands of the movement that anchors the problematic PRB label within a context of iconographic exchange. -

It focuses on her sources in Mme de Staël’s, J.C.L. Simonde de Sismondi’s, August Schlegel’s and Henry Francis Cary’s critical readings of Dante. By analysing Mary Shelley’s use of Dante in Rambles, it will be shown that Mary Shelley became a mediator and introduced contemporary Italian political readings of his work and anticipated the Victorian interest in Dante’s Vita Nuova.
