Email: [email protected] RESUMEN Las 33 especies de lagartos agrupados en seis géneros de la II Región de Chile (Antofagasta) son revisadas taxonómicamente y se establece su patrón de distribución geográfica regional. Se reconocen tres ensambles de lagartijas Que corresponden al de la costa oeste, al desierto interior y la precordillera y cordillera de la Región de Antofagasta. El endemismo a nivel genérico estaría constituido por Phrynosaura. A nivel de especies, los endemismos son distintos según el ensamble. Se examinan algunas evidencias ecogeográficas para dar cuenta de estos patrones de distribución regional. El patrón temporal de esta distribución se examina a la luz de evidencia geológica y climática disponible para el área de estudios. Palabras clave: Chile, Antofagasta, Lagartos, Biogeografía. ABSTRACT Geographical distribution of lizards occurring in Antofagasta region, Chile. Thirty three lizard species, belonging to six genera from the Second Region of Chile Antofagasta, are reviewed, particularly their taxonomy and geographical distribution. Three sets of species are recognized, corresponding to the west coast, inland desert and pre Andes and Andes of Antofagasta. Generic endemism is Phrynosaura. At the species level, endemism is related to generic diversity. Some ecogeographical evidences are examined to explain the distributional pattern. -

Quantifying the Conservation Value of Plantation Forests for a Madagascan Herpetofauna

QUANTIFYING THE CONSERVATION VALUE OF PLANTATION FORESTS FOR A MADAGASCAN HERPETOFAUNA BETH EVANS Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute, Nosy Komba, Madagascar current address: 121 Heathway, Erith, Kent DA8 3LZ, UK, email: [email protected] Abstract.—Plantations are becoming a dominant component of the forest landscape of Madagascar, yet there is very little information available regarding the implications of different forms of plantation agriculture for Madagascan reptiles and amphibians. I determined the conservation value of bamboo, secondary, open-canopy plantation, and closed-canopy plantation forests for reptiles and amphibians on the island of Nosy Komba, in the Sambirano region of north-west Madagascar. Assistants and I conducted 220 Visual Encounter Surveys between 29 January 2016 and 5 July 2017 and recorded 3,113 reptiles (32 species) and 751 amphibians (nine species). Closed-canopy plantation supported levels of alpha diversity and community compositions reflective of natural forest, including several threatened and forest-specialist species. Open-canopy plantation exhibited diminished herpetofaunal diversity and a distinct community composition dominated by disturbance-resistant generalist species. Woody tree density and bamboo density were positively correlated with herpetofaunal species richness, and plantation species richness, plantation species density, sapling density, and the proportion of wood ground cover were negatively associated with herpetofaunal diversity. I recommend the integration of closed-canopy plantations on Nosy Komba, and across wider Madagascar, to help mitigate the negative effects of secondary forest conversion for agriculture on Madagascan herpetofauna; however, it will be necessary to retain areas of natural forest to act as sources of biodiversity for agroforestry plantations. -

Travelling to Cyprus since his early childhood and deeply fascinated by living David J. Sparrow things, he has long been interested in the island’s nature, Hans-Jörg Wiedl especially in reptiles and amphibians. On the basis of intensive zoological reading, he conducted his first field studies while still at school. Civil service at the Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg (Frankfurt/M.) gave him the chance to bring further ideas to fruition. Since 2008, he has been studying biology and philosophy at The Amphibians the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. David J. Sparrow. and Reptiles of Cyprus Born in 1946 in the UK. Dr. David Sparrow is a Singapore-based photographer. He gained BSc (Hons) (1964) and PhD (1970) degrees in chemistry from the University of Birmingham, England. He worked in the chemical industry for 34 years during which time he co- authored, edited, reviewed and refereed numerous sci- entific articles, papers and books. He has had a lifetime fascination with snakes, and this project gave him the opportunity to combine this interest with his passion The Amphibians of Cyprus and Reptiles for photography. Hans-Jörg Wiedl (“Snake George”). Born 1943 in Innsbruck (Austria), he grew up in the wilderness of Häselgehr in the Lechtal (Tirol), now a National Park. As an UN peacekeeper in Cyprus in 1973/1974, he developed his deep concern for the conservation of the herpetofauna of Cyprus. In 1986, he moved permanently to Cyprus, and established the “Snake George Reptile Park” in 1995. -

We describe and compare the advertisement calls of Hyloscirtus antioquia and H. larinopygion, two sibling spe- cies of the Andean stream treefrogs of the Hyloscirtus larinopygion group. We recorded individual calls at seven locali- ties in Colombia, including the type locality of H. antioquia. The advertisement calls of both species consist of a single, low-pitched, multi-pulsed note, with some overlaps in frequency and the duration of pulses (dominant frequency 1642.7– 1756.5 Hz and 5–6 periodic pulses in H. antioquia and 1722.7–1894.9 Hz and 5–6 periodic pulses in H. larinopygion). -

Editor in charge: Ralf Britz Abstract We scrutinize scientifc names erected for or referred to Natrix astreptophora (Seoane, 1884), Natrix helvetica (Lacepède, 1789), and Natrix natrix (Linnaeus, 1758). As far as possible, we provide synonymies for the individual subspecies of each species, identify each name with one of the mtDNA lineages or nuclear genomic clusters within these taxa, and clarify the whereabouts of type material. In addi tion, we feature homonyms and names erroneously identifed with grass snakes. For Natrix astreptophora (Seoane, 1884), we recognize a second subspecies from North Africa under the name Natrix astreptophora algerica (Hecht, 1930). The nominotypical subspecies occurs in the European part of the distribution range (Iberian Peninsula, adjacent France). Within Natrix helvetica (Lacepède, 1789), we recognize four subspecies. The nominotypical subspecies occurs in the northern distribution range, Natrix helvetica sicula (Cuvier, 1829) in Sicily, mainland Italy and adjacent regions, Natrix helvetica cetti Gené, 1839 on Sardinia, and Natrix helvetica corsa (Hecht, 1930) on Corsica. However, the validity of the latter subspecies is questionable.
