Five years is a long period for project‐funded research and non‐palaeolimnologists may forgive me when I first recognize the fact that additional five varves (annual laminations) and tree rings have accumulated during the project time extending our geoarchives of landscape change. Obviously, our Virtual Institute is documented not only in our publications, PhD theses, outreach and other commonly used evaluation parameters, but and measurable also in our archives. These five varves and tree rings probably are amongst the best studied and we made significant steps forward in understanding how they formed and how environmental signals were transferred into our archives. We are gathering here to present our main achievements and share them with the scientific community, but we also want to make use of this symposium to address new challenges for our research and discuss novel approaches and methodologies to address these challenges. The overarching goal of landscape research is to better anticipate regional impacts of future global change in order to create intelligent adaptation strategies to limit negative consequences of such changes for our societies. However, landscape evolution is the result of complex coupled processes working at different time scales. Anticipating future developments will not be possible by simply extrapolating trends of the last few decades because of inherent legacies and landscape controlling mechanisms that function on longer time scales. We, therefore, need to integrate information from the past in a holistic and time‐integrating approach. However, the concept of learning from the past is easy to be claimed, but its realization in detail still is challenging and not straightforward to accomplish. Information from the past is recorded in different natural archives including lake sediments, tree rings, palaeo‐soils and geomorphological features. All of them have been intensively studied within ICLEA. Each of these archives contains information about different environmental aspects at different time resolution and a comprehensive picture about past landscape evolution and its driving mechanisms requires integrating all available information. In order to be able to achieve this, we first must know how to reliably interpret the data from our archives in terms of past changes. Proxy data are for geoscientists like hieroglyphs for archaeologists for which a dictionary is lacking. In ICLEA, we implemented the task to write such dictionary for our proxy data. We made good progress in proxy calibration as this will be presented during our symposium. However, we also disclose some fundamental challenges that we would like to discuss in the next three days. One of these concerns is the question of a non‐analogue situation today due to the comprehensive human impact that might not allow the transfer of observed climate – environment – proxy relations far back in time. Even without human impact the proxy responses to climate and environment changes might not always have been stationary on longer time scales. In ICLEA, we have demonstrated that STR 17/03. DOI: 10.2312/GFZb103-17037 4 ICLEA Final Symposium 2017 ‐ GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany we have to seriously consider these limitations in proxy calibration, but that there are potential solutions to deal with these limitations in a differentiated way and, ultimately, minimize them. In ICLEA our focus particularly is on terrestrial geoarchives, because they have the advantage over marine and ice cores of providing regional climate and environment information directly from the human habitat. As above mentioned, this advantage implies the problem of possible direct and indirect human‐induced modifications of proxy signals in these archives. On the other hand, this can provide new windows into the way of life of pre‐historic societies which did not deliver written documents. Exploiting our archives with respect to past human activities is a major chance especially for palaeolimnological research in the next decade. The main objective and challenge will be to disentangle human and natural signals in these archives. In contrast to the progress in climate and environment proxies, we still have a great demand in developing proxies for human activity like, for example, specific fire proxies and human biomarkers. Some first attempts in this direction have been developed in ICLEA that will presented during this symposium. We will present our main results in an integrated way according to the main themes of relevance rather than following the classical work package ordering based on archive type and disciplines. The order of sessions partly reflect the development of research in ICLEA during course of the project. We started with a strong focus on deciphering the role of natural variability and its driving mechanisms and increasingly considered man – climate – environment interactions as a highly intriguing topic not only for the industrialization period, but even for the prehistoric period. Session 1: Abrupt and High Frequency Climate Variability since the Late Glacial Session 2: Recent change and instrumental observations Session 3: Integrating time‐scales and regional synchronization Session 4: Man ‐ climate ‐ environment interactions We have invited international experts for each of these themes to give keynote presentations and further stimulate our discussions. In addition to the oral sessions, we give room for detailed discussions in front of posters as in our previous workshops. Finally, we keep a good ICLEA tradition to discuss new results not only in lecture rooms but also in front of the objects that we are investigating, i.e. during field excursions.

The survey project collected information on 65 archaeological sites. A total of 177 archaeological sites had been recorded prior to the 1986 project making a total of 242 sites on file at the end of the survey work. Since that time, other archaeological sites have been added to the North Carolina site files at the Office of State Archaeology, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources in Raleigh. The updated inventory presented here includes 410 sites across the county and serves to make the information current. Most of the information in this document is from the original survey and site forms on file at the Office of State Archaeology and may not reflect the current conditions of some of the sites. This updated inventory was undertaken as a Special Project by members of the Alamance County Historic Properties Commission (HPC) and published in-house by the Alamance County Planning Department. The goals of this project are three-fold and include: 1) to make the archaeological and cultural heritage of the county more accessible to its citizens; 2) to serve as a planning tool for the Alamance County Planning Department and provide aid in preservation and conservation efforts by the county planners; and 3) to serve as a research tool for scholars studying the prehistory and history of Alamance County.

Walker © 2011 Ting Wang ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TING WANG: Paleoclimate Reconstruction in Northwest Scotland and Southwest Florida during the Late Holocene (Under the direction of Dr. Donna M. Surge) The study reconstructed seasonal climate change in mid-latitude northwest Scotland during the climate episodes Neoglacial (~3300-2500 BP) and Roman Warm Period (RWP; ~2500-1600 BP) and in subtropical southwest Florida during the latter part of RWP (1-550 AD) based on archaeological shell accumulations in two study areas. In northwest Scotland, seasonal sea surface temperature (SST) during the Neoglacial and RWP was estimated from high-resolution oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of radiocarbon-dated limpet (Patella vulgata) shells accumulated in a cave dwelling on the Isle of Mull. The SST results revealed a cooling transition from the Neoglacial to RWP, which is supported by earlier studies of pine pollen in Scotland and European glacial events and also coincident with the abrupt climate deterioration at 2800-2700 BP. The cooling transition might have been driven by decreased solar radiation and weakened North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) conditions. In southwest Florida, seasonal-scale climate conditions for the latter part of RWP were reconstructed by using high-resolution δ18O of archaeological shells (Mercenaria campechiensis) and otoliths (Ariopsis felis).

DOI: 10.1051/swsc/2020082 Abstract In addition to the regular Schwabe cycles of approximately 11 y, “prolonged solar activity minima” have been identified through the direct observation of sunspots and aurorae, as well as proxy data of cosmogenic isotopes. Some of these minima have been regarded as grand solar minima, which are arguably associated with the special state of the solar dynamo and have attracted significant scientific interest. In this paper, we review how these prolonged solar activity minima have been identified. In particular, we focus on the Dalton Minimum, which is named after John Dalton. We review Dalton’s scientific achievements, particularly in geophysics. Special emphasis is placed on his lifelong observations of auroral displays over approximately five decades in Great Britain. Dalton’s observations for the auroral frequency allowed him to notice the scarcity of auroral displays in the early 19th century.

Het betreft analyse- en assessment werk dat beoogt een gebalanceerde beoordeling te geven van de stand van de kennis ten behoeve van de onderbouwing van beleidsmatige keuzes. Deze analyse- en assessment activiteiten hebben een looptijd van enkele maanden tot ca. een jaar, afhankelijk van de complexiteit en de urgentie van de beleidsvraag. Per onderwerp wordt een assessment team samengesteld bestaande uit de beste Nederlandse experts. Het gaat om incidenteel en additioneel gefinancierde werkzaamheden, te onderscheiden van de reguliere, structureel gefinancierde activiteiten van het consortium op het gebied van klimaatonderzoek. Er dient steeds te worden uitgegaan van de actuele stand der wetenschap. Klanten zijn met name de NMP-departementen, met VROM in een coördinerende rol, maar tevens maatschappelijke groeperingen die een belangrijke rol spelen bij de besluitvorming over en uitvoering van het klimaatbeleid.

September 2017 Berlin 2017 Abstract Abstract The glacial landscape of the northern Central European lowlands in Germany and Poland is characterized by a large number of lakes. These lakes fulfill important ecosystem services, however, they are sensitive to climate change, land use changes, and human impact. Very few of them are regularly monitored in situ. This thesis tests the potential of remote sensing imagery for the long-term monitoring of lakes in northern Central European lowlands, because remote sensing imagery enables an area wide monitoring with the possibility of multi-temporal observations. The thesis comprises the results of four scientific papers aiming at the development and evaluation of new remotely-sensed lake monitoring methods, in combination with instrument and proxy-based monitoring. The monitoring is focused on 1) the reconstruction of lake levels and the monitoring of 2) shoreline vegetation and 3) calcite precipitation as part of the Helmholtz Virtual Institute for Integrated Climate and Landscape Evolution Analyses (ICLEA). The lakes are characterized by seasonal and long-term lake level changes, which affect the shoreline vegetation (reed belts). In this thesis, lake levels are reconstructed by intersecting water-land borders that were derived from remote sensing imagery together with topographic data.

Some of these prolonged minima have been regarded as grand solar minima, which are arguably associated with the special state of the solar dynamo and have attracted significant scientific interest. In this paper, we review how these prolonged solar activity minima have been identified. In particular, we focus on the Dalton Minimum, which is named after John Dalton. We review Dalton’s scientific achievements, particularly in geophysics. Special emphasis is placed on his lifelong observations of auroral displays over approximately five decades in Great Britain. Dalton’s observations for the auroral frequency allowed him to notice the scarcity of auroral displays in the early 19th century.
