Planning for Combined Trips of Bicycling and Public Transport in the Capital Region of Denmark PLANNING FOR COMBINED TRIPS OF BICYCLING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN THE CAPITAL REGION OF DENMARK A RESEARCH STUDY OF A TRANSFORMATION PROCESS (Copenhagenize, 2017) Simon Mølgård Larsson MSc in Engineering in Sustainable Cities Master Thesis Aalborg University Supervisor: Morten Elle 12th of January 2018 Simon Mølgård Larsson MSc in Engineering in Sustainable Cities Master Thesis Aalborg University Supervisor: Morten Elle 12th of January 2018 1 Preface This thesis has come about as I think it is important to focus on how the increasing car traffic in The Capital Region of Denmark can be reduced. In that perspective the combination of public transport and bicycling will be a good alternative to the car. There have not been made many investigations of this synergy, thus this thesis will analyze how it can be a more dominating transport mode in the region. I will like to give a special thanks to my supervisor Morten Elle for providing good feedback and knowledge, and for guiding me through the process. I will also thank the eight interviewees for the useful empirical knowledge and data they have provided this thesis with, and for inviting me to conferences and meetings about the topic. They are: Lene Wagner Hartmann – The Municipality of Furesø Annette Kayser – The Municipality of Copenhagen Jakob Schiøtt Stenbæk Madsen - The Municipality of Copenhagen Zofia Jagielska - The Road Directorate Jan Jørgensen - The Transport, Construction and Housing Authority Ole Bjergager - DSB Properties Jakob Skovgaard Villien - The Capital Region Anna Hviid Garrett - The Cycle Superhighway Secretary 2 Abstract This thesis will investigate how the combined trip of bicycling and public transport can be planned and governed in order to transform it into a more dominating transport mode in The Capital Region of Denmark. Even though it is a highly used transport mode already, the car traffic is increasing in the region, and it is assessed that there is an unfulfilled potential in making the combined trip a better alternative. Therefore it will be analyzed how a transformation of the combined trip can be established in the frame of ‘transition theory’ and with scientific research of ‘state of the art’ of this synergy between bicycling and public transport. It will be analyzed how this transformation can be planned and governed on a regional, municipal and local scale in The Capital Region. On the regional planning level in The Capital Region it is analyzed how a reorganization of the governing of regional bicycle and public transport projects can be integrated in a reflexive mannered governance approach with multi-actor participation and long-term planning. Through a case study of Furesø Municipality in the suburbs of Copenhagen, it will be analyzed how a municipality, which is considered to be a pioneer of bicycle integration, still has to experiment with new solutions to reduce the high number of car trips which is conducted in Furesø. These experiments have to be anchored across the plans and strategies within the municipality, but also in the surrounding municipalities in The Capital Region and in the traffic companies. The case study of Ny Ellebjerg Station, which is a future traffic hub in Copenhagen, will contribute with solutions on how collaboration between the actors and installation of new bicycle infrastructure can improve the combined trip. • People to Walk More
MORE PEOPLE TO WALK MORE The Pedestrian strategy of Copenhagen 2 More People to Walk More... ... it’s healthy ... you protect the environment ... you contribute to a living city ... you get new ideas ... you discover more ... you meet other people ... it’s free 3 PREFACE We are all pedestrians – every day. Sometimes we’re just out for a walk, other times we have a specific goal in mind. Even when we take our bike or car, go by bus, train or metro the trip usually starts and ends on foot. Most of us can walk in the city with no problems, whereas some of us need a bit of help on our walk. If you use a walking stick, a walker, a wheelchair or something similar, then you’re particularly dependent on the pavements, roads and so on being easy to access. This, however, does not change the fact that we are all pedestrians. In Copenhagen, we are very keen to focus on pedestrians so we can achieve an even better city life for everybody even more healthy citizens and a better environment. It is essential for us to create an even more interesting, exciting and safe city. For this reason, I would like to introduce here one of the goals in the City of Copenha- gen’s proposal for city life entitled “Metropolis for People”: ”More People to Walk More”. The pedestrian strategy “ More People to Walk More” contains a number of proposals as to how Copenhagen can become an even better city for pedestrians, showing how to achieve the goal of 20 % more pedestrians by 2015.

The Train Driver Recovery Problem – a Set Partitioning Based Model and Solution Method Natalia J. Rezanova Informatics and Mathematical Modelling, Technical University of Denmark Richard Petersens Plads 1, Building 305, DK-2800 Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark e-mail: [email protected] David M. Ryan The Department of Engineering Science, Faculty of Engineering The University of Auckland Private Bag 92019, Auckland Mail Centre, Auckland 1142, New Zealand e-mail: [email protected] IMM-TECHNICAL REPORT-2006-24 Abstract The need to recover a train driver schedule occurs during major disruptions in the daily railway operations. Using data from the train driver schedule of the Dan- ish passenger railway operator DSB S-tog A/S, a solution method to the Train Driver Recovery Problem (TDRP) is developed. The TDRP is formulated as a set partitioning problem. The LP relaxation of the set partitioning formulation of the TDRP possesses strong integer properties. The proposed model is there- fore solved via the LP relaxation and Branch & Price. Starting with a small set of drivers and train tasks assigned to the drivers within a certain time period, the LP relaxation of the set partitioning model is solved with column generation. If a feasible solution is not found, further drivers are gradually added to the prob- lem or the optimization time period is increased. Fractions are resolved with a constraint branching strategy using the depth-first search of the Branch & Bound tree. Preliminarily results are encouraging, showing that nearly all tested real-life instances produce integer solutions to the LP relaxation and solutions are found within a few seconds.
