Day 2: Vilnius – Trakai – Kaunas (100 km) Breakfast at the hotel Optional: Vilnius Sightseeing tour (3 hours) Vilnius Old Town is located on the left bank of the Neris River south of Castle Hill, developed over the centuries absorbed the various cultural trends and today recognized by UNESCO as the largest historic architectural complex in Eastern Europe. In the old town you can see the Gediminas Castle. Today, tourists can explore the west tower, the remains of the ramparts and the castle itself. Near the castle is the Cathedral Square, where you can see the hero of Vilnius - Grand Duke Gediminas. Special attention deserves Vilnius University, one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. Among the famous alumni of the University should be called the Polish poets Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Slovacki, Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, Czeslaw Milosz - Nobel Laureate in Literature and many others. The largest courtyard of University due to the mixing of architectural styles and numerous arches give the impression that you are in the south of Italy. It should be noted that, perhaps, no other city in Eastern Europe there are so many churches and cathedrals as in Vilnius. St. Anne's Church stands out, in fact it is a grand masterpiece of late Lithuanian Gothic. The 14th century red brick castle now houses the Art Museum. The castles of Trakai are the best known works of defensive architecture in Lithuania. The old town of Trakai, which includes the Island and the Peninsula Castles, surrounded by lakes, is one of the most impressive and most picturesque locations in Europe. Kaunas is the city, which was not destroyed during the Second World War; thus now it has a number of ancient architecture monuments. The Old Town is a concentration of the most important, ancient city architectural monuments: the 13th century Castle, the Old Town Hall, nicknamed the “White Swan”, the Archicathedral Basilica, the Church of St. Francis Xavier and the Jesuit monastery, Perkunas House and Vytautas Church. The most outstanding monument of the Baroque epoch is the architectural complex of Pazaislis Monastery. It is one of the most beautiful Baroque style erections in Lithuania. Visit Hill of Crosses in Sauliai (1 hour) The Hill of Crosses, Kryžių Kalnas, located 12 kilometers north of the small industrial city of Siauliai (pronounced shoo- lay) is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity. Nida is a resort town in Lithuania, the administrative centre of Neringa municipality. Located on the Curonian Spit between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea, it is the westernmost point of Lithuania and the Baltic states, close to the border with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast exclave. One year later a summer-house, designed by the architect Herbert Reissmann, was built on "Mother-in-law" hill. Reminiscent of a fisherman's house it became the new residence of the Nobel Prize winner, stimulating his creativity and a place to rest and relax. Thomas Mann and his family spent three consecutive summers in Nida from 1930-1932. During this time Thomas Mann not only relaxed, but he wrote various articles, essays, numerous letters and the novel Joseph and his brothers. Palanga is the biggest seaside resort of Lithuania. Originally a fishermen’s village, Palanga was first mentioned in the written sources in the 12th century. The inhabitants were engaged not only in fishery, they also gathered amber which would reach the distant countries of Europe and Asia via the merchants’ routes. In the 19th century, Palanga started developing into a health resort. One of the most beautiful places in Palanga is the Tishkevichius Palace nowadays Amber Museum which holds a great variety of amber pieces and collections. Visit Amber museum (1 hour) Museum containing one of the most abundant collections of amber inclusions and pieces in the world has about 30 thousand exhibits in total. Optional: Liepaja Sightseeing tour (4 hours) The beginnings of Liepāja date back to the 13th century when a village was founded between the lake and the sea. The village was named Līva after a little river. Liepāja has grown from a small village into the third largest city in Latvia with the population of 85 000 people. It is a port city and the port is handling wide spectrum of transit cargos. Liepāja is a city of students. There is Liepāja University – it got the university status in 2008 but has been a higher education institution since 1954 – as well as branches of several other national higher education institutions. A new generation of musicians and artists is studying at Liepāja music and art schools. Liepāja is rich in well-established cultural traditions.
