© 2012 Myra Susan Washington © 2012 Myra Susan Washington BRANDING BLASIANS: MIXED RACE BLACK/ASIAN AMERICANS IN THE CELEBRITY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX BY MYRA SUSAN WASHINGTON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Kent Ono, Chair Professor Angharad Valdivia Professor Lisa Nakamura Professor Ronald Jackson III Professor Norman Denzin Abstract Contemporary multiracial discourses rely on two overarching frames of mixed-race: mixed-race as uniquely new phenomenon and mixed race as resistant to dominant paradigms of race and racism. Both have been necessary for multiracial activists and the mixed race movement, and have served as the foundation for much of the current research in mixed race studies. This dissertation posits that a third frame exists, one that neither sees mixed-race as new or unique, nor as a racial salve to move the United States past the problem of the color line. This third paradigm is pluralistic, fluid in its ambiguity, and allows for the potential of ambivalence and contradictions within mixed-race. This paradigmatic shifting view of race rearticulates what it means to be Black, Asian, Other, and results in the creation of multiracial/other subjectivities which can become a formidable obstacle to the racial order of the United States. Importantly, this dissertation argues Blasians trouble the logic of existing U.S. racial classifications, without establishing their own. Blasians (mixed-race Black and Asian people) are challenging the hegemony of race constructed around the lives of not just Blacks and Asians, but all members of U.S. society, as we are all embroiled in the illogical (and contradictory) discourses framing our identities. I do not offer Blasians as a racial salve, as resistant to or prescription for either race or racism through virtue of their mixed-race bodies. Instead, I have used this dissertation to describe the emergence of Blasians, not to add to the research that divides monoracials from multiracials, but to muddle the lines between them. The analyses of these celebrities acknowledge that to understand what is a Blasian, means to first understand, and then complicate, hegemonic notions of race as it applies to both Blacks and Asians. Contextualized against those dominant discourses, Blasians explode the narrow boundaries of authenticity ii around racialized categories. Blasians, as I discuss them in this dissertation do not escape race, or erase race, but they do force the reconstruction of normative instantiations of identity. iii Acknowledgements If graduate school is a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs, writing this dissertation was a perpetual downhill thrill. I have loved every minute of writing my dissertation so much that I am still not tired of writing, reading, thinking, and talking about Blasians and celebrities. I know without a doubt a large part of why I loved dissertating was because Kent Ono is the very best advisor ever. Thank you Kent for being a never-ending well of encouragement, patience and support, especially during those moments when I doubted the significance of my work. Thanks for answering my many questions – even the ones I asked repeatedly– at all hours of the day (and night). Some of my most favorite moments were our weekly meetings, which lasted longer and longer because I became distracted and took us off track on some unrelated tangent, or would ask you about the meaning of life (for an academic), or would pester you for stories and advice, and you would unwearyingly guide me back to my dissertation each time. At the beginning of this process you said by the end we would be friends, and I thought at the time that was both crazy and implausible, but you were absolutely right, and for that I am the most thankful. I am also thankful to my committee, which I dubbed The Best Committee Ever Assembled, and if I could trademark that I would. The soundtrack features two other successful singles, a remix of the U.S. top twenty "Can't Help But Wait", by Trey Song featuring rapper Plies, and another successful rap single, reaching at 14 in the U.S., "Hypnotized", by rapper Plies and R&B singer Akon. Step Up 2 the Street was released on February 14, 2008 in USA. This movie only consists of one language that is English language. This movie has 1 2 running time of 97 minutes.

In a 2011 interview, King noted that he knew from an early age that he was "going to go into show business." Toward that goal, after graduating from a Scranton public high school, he applied to New York City's Juilliard School, one of the premier performing arts conservatories in the country. Unfortunately, his family could not afford Juilliard's high tuition, and King instead attended the more affordable Mercyhurst University, a Catholic liberal arts college in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mercyhurst had a small theater program at the time, which King later learned to appreciate, explaining that he received invaluable personal attention from the faculty and was allowed to explore and grow his talent at his own pace. However, he left college after three years without graduating, driven, he said, by a desire to move to New York and "make it as an actor." In New York, King worked multiple jobs, such as waiting on tables and unloading buses at night, while studying acting during the day at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

    ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media.     THE FORGOTTEN FIFTH: RURAL YOUTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE Lisa R. Pruitt* This Article seeks to raise the visibility of the roughly twenty percent of the U.S. population who live in rural places—an often forgotten fifth—in rela- tion to the particular challenges presented by adolescent substance abuse. De- spite popular notions that substance abuse is essentially an urban phenomenon, recent data demonstrate that it is also a significant problem in rural America. Rural youth now abuse most substances, including alcohol and tobacco, at higher rates and at younger ages than their urban peers. The Article assesses the social, economic and spatial milieu in which rural adolescent substance abuse has burgeoned. Features of some rural communi- ties, such as a tolerance for youth and lenient and informal law enforcement responses, appear to benefit youth. Indeed, these are consistent with juvenile justice trends, such as diversion programs. Yet other characteristics of rural communities, such as limited social service and healthcare infrastructures, un- dermine the efficacy of such programs. Arguing that national drug policies often reflect urban agendas and leave rural communities disserved, this Article calls for policies that are more sensi- tive to rural contexts. It advocates nuanced empirical research that will provide a more comprehensive understanding of rural risk factors and, in turn, inform rural prevention, treatment, and diversion programs. Finally, it argues that fed- eral, state, and local responses to adolescent substance abuse must tackle defi- ciencies in rural infrastructure, while keeping in mind factors that differentiate rural places from what has become the implicit urban norm in law- and policy- * Professor of Law, University of California, Davis.

    Trap Spaces, Trap Music: Harriet Jacobs, Fetty Wap, and Emancipation as Entrapment SEAN M. KENNEDY Set in a New York City trap house—an apartment that serves as the hub for an outlaw drug business—Fetty Wap’s 2014 song and video “Trap Queen” depicts the stacks of U.S. currency and the manufacture of product that are core aspects of the genre of trap music. But the song and video also portray an outlier to this strategic essentialism: namely, the loving romance at its center which challenges the mainstream common sense of the misogyny of rap. Likewise, the sonics of “Trap Queen”—upbeat, even joyful—contrast with the aural hardness of much of the genre. In these ways, “Trap Queen” is an important pop-cultural political intervention against both the enduring pathologizing of Black life and the sense of siege with which many Black people, especially poor ones, are perceived to live.1 But while Fetty Wap’s persona in “Trap Queen” can be understood as a homo- economicus figure (Wynter 123) of the informal economy—a breadwinner who can self-determine his own life, albeit within the narrow bounds of criminalized enterprise—that burdened self-possession is doubled for his female partner presented as a woman who will happily do anything for her “man,” from cooking crack to giving him a lap dance (see Figure 1). These labors are shown to be uncoerced. Nevertheless, the larger structures of the racial-capitalist formal economy essentially force many Black women into such gendered survival labor. Indeed, the situation of these women, which Fetty Wap’s “trap queen” only partially evokes, illustrates the thinness of freedom under liberal democracy of which emancipation from slavery is considered paradigmatic.

She's no technical master on the mic; her raps are fairly simple, delivered in the slow purr of a heavy-lidded stoner. Yet they're also full of hilariously surreal free associations that fit the off-kilter sensibility of the music to a tee. Actually, Elliott sings more on Supa Dupa Fly than she does on her subsequent albums, making it her most R&B-oriented effort; she's more unique as a rapper than she is as a singer, but she has a smooth voice and harmonizes well.
