The research notebooks have been rehoused for preservation purposes. The material in Box 2 was found in an accordion file, but is treated here as a notebook. The materials in Box 3 were removed from two three-ring binders. Each notebook has been counted as a single item. 2. Subjects identified in Ellen Robinson's letters are indexed from the originals. The same subjects may also be present in the transcripts and in Dolley's manuscript of the Robinson letters. 3. A box of photographs was transferred to the Photo Archives (year unknown) and assigned call number photCL 123. These photographs are included at the end of this finding aid. Biographical Note Frank Steve Dolley (1885-1961) was born in Maine, graduated from Pomona College in 1907, and completed Bowdoin Medical School in 1911. He settled permanently in Los Angeles, California, in 1929, where he was a prominent thoracic surgeon. Beyond his medical interests, he was a collector and student of the history of the western United States, particularly the lower Colorado River. Scope and Content This collection consists of research materials compiled by Southern California physician Frank Dolley for his study of the lower Colorado River, especially related to steam navigation, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The bulk of the collection is comprised of research materials from the 1950s including two manuscripts written by Dolley, research notes, Dolley's correspondence, and copy prints, negatives, and lantern slides of historic photographs. There are also some original materials including correspondence of Ellen Robinson (died 1913), the wife of a Colorado River steamboat pilot, and approximately fifteen photographs dating from the late 1880s. The collection includes two manuscripts written by Dolley: "Early Pilots of the Colorado River" and "Wife at Port Isabel: A Pioneer Woman's Colorado River Letters." The first is a history of navigation on the lower Colorado River that includes a brief discussion of Spanish explorations of the Delta region but emphasizes the region's nineteenth-century history, with Frank S. Dolley Collection: mssDolley; photCL 123 2 Finding Aid particular attention paid to steamboat design and pilots. Included in this manuscript are discussions of the Chemehuevi, Cocopah, and Yuma Indians, the Colorado Steam Navigation Company, Captains George H. Derby and William H. Hardy, J.C. Ives, and A. H. Wilcox. The second manuscript is an edited version of Ellen M. Robinson's letters, most between Ellen at Port Isabel on the Colorado Delta and her family in Maryland. These letters depict the experiences of a young woman moving across the country in 1869 with David Robinson, a husband she barely knew, as she tried to narrate the journey and describe her new home to her family. Among the notable experiences she relayed in her letters was a visit to the unfinished Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, a parade in San Francisco featuring General William T. Sherman, and a visit to Woodward's Gardens while staying in that city. This second manuscript was published in as "Wife at Port Isabel: A Pioneer Woman's Colorado River Letters," The Westerners Brand Book (Los Angeles Corral) vol. 7 (1957): 271-285. The correspondence section contains Ellen Robinson's original letters from the 1870s, often with copies made by Dolley, and Dolley's correspondence with Ellen's daughter Margaret Robinson (born 1872) in the 1950s. Three of Dolley's research notebooks are included, covering numerous subjects related to the lower Colorado River region and the Colorado Delta, with particular focus on the river's steamboat activity. These notebooks have been divided for preservation and ease of use, but remain in the order in which they were found, which is loosely alphabetical by subject. There is repetition from one notebook to the other, though each also includes unique material. Most of these notes represent Dolley's research in published sources, including periodicals, narrative accounts, and regional histories, but also includes correspondence with Percy Carter Linss, a descendent of Colorado River ferry operator and landowner Hall Hanlon. There are 95 photographic prints (chiefly copy prints with some originals including carte-de-visite portraits), 94 copy film negatives, and 12 lantern slides of various images of steamboats and towns along the Colorado River and people related to the steamers, dating from approximately 1860-approximately 1910. There are several photographs of Yuma, Arizona, taken from the 1860s to the 1890s; Ehrenberg, Arizona; and Andrade, California. Among the steamboats shown are the St. Vallier, Colorado No. 1, Colorado No. 2, Mohave, Searchlight, and Silas J. Lewis. This collection also includes maps of the Lower Colorado River and Yuma, and advertising material for a river excursion and the Pacific and Colorado Steam Navigation Company. Ives, Corps of Topographic Engineers, United States Army, with his small steamboat, the "Explorer," left the mouth of the Colorado on December 31, 1857 (I-38), and reached the lower end of Black Canyon, nea.r the site of the present Hoover Dam, on March B, 1858 (I-80), a distance of approximately 420 miles in 68 days, or six miles per day. He rightly concluded that this was the head of navigation for his vessel and then went by rowboat upstream through Black Canyon and past the mouth of Virgin River (I-87). He returned to the "Explorer" and on or about March 13 (I-88) started back down- stream. Those are the bare essentials. Let us see what brought about the expedition, whether or not it was the first one, what were the problems and conflicts, and what became of the participants. Following the discovery of gold in California in 1849, there was a stream of emigrants pouring westward into that state, many of them coming by the southern route which crossed the Colorado River near the present site of Yuma, which was first known as Arizona City. One of the persons who crossed here was a Dr. Able B. Lincoln of New York and Illinois (IV-I39) who saw the possibilities of a good income in a ferry at that site, so he stayed there and built one.

    Steamboats on the Colorado River Steamboats on the Colorado River operated from the river mouth at the Colorado River Delta on the Gulf of California in Mexico, up to the Virgin River on the Lower Colorado River Valley in the Southwestern United States from 1852 until 1916. The shallow draft paddle steamers were found to be the most economical way to ship goods between the Pacific Ocean ports and the settlements, military forts, and mines along the river, putting in at landings in Sonora State, Mexico, Baja California Territory, California, Arizona Territory, New Mexico Territory, and Nevada. They remained the primary means of transportation of freight until the advent of the more economical railroads that began cutting away at their business in 1878 when the first line entered the Arizona Territory. The first steamboat on the Colorado River was the Uncle Sam, launched in 1852 by James Turnbull, who had been awarded a contract to supply goods to Fort Yuma. But the Uncle Sam sank, and the contract was given to George Alonzo Johnson. In 1854, Johnson purchased the General Jesup. The General Jesup was also a side wheeler and at 104 feet and with a much more powerful engine, it survived until 1859 when it was dismantled. It was also more successful than the Uncle Sam not only because of its larger engine but the fact that Johnson established wood- yards along the river and hire Cocopah Indians to supply him with cut wood for the engine. In 1856 Captain Johnson was responsible for getting the approval of Congress to explore the upper Colorado River for the military.

    'The Devil IN EARLYWINTER 1852, some Yuma Indians took one look at the strange craft on the Colorado River and ran away in fear. "The devil is coming!" they cried. One of them might even have suggested that this devil was "blowing fire and smoke out of his nose and kicking water back with his feet." These Yumas, or Quechans, had seen various boats on the river before, but never a paddle-wheeler, with its smoke­ stack belching smoke and sparks and its paddle wheel toss­ PADDLE- ing the water into the air. For years, the river steamboats had performed enormous service in the development of the West. In 1809 Robert Ful­ ton, inventor of the first successful steamboat, founded the Mississippi Steamboat Company and on the C began commercial river transportation from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. By 1814 steamboats had entered the Red River, When a steamboat first appeared on the followed by the Arkansas and the Min- nesota. But the longest and by far most they would get plenty of chances to become important river for opening the Western frontier was the Missouri, along with its tributaries. More than 3,000 miles of water connected St. Louis with the head of navigation of the Missouri at Fort Ben- ton, in what is now Montana. Tuttle) The American people are united in determination to develop the full resources of this great stream which has for untold ages been rolling its yellow flood from its sources in the snowy peaks of the Rockies and its auxiliary ranges, down to the Gulf of California and, in the process of time, has cut its way through the Grand Canyon; through its different strata of marble pillars, castellated sandstones, granite peaks, great beds of schists, shales and carboniferous deposits; carving out valleys, filling depressions, and carrying life to the dry desert wastes until it found a resting place in its great mother, the ocean. No one lives to tell its story; no human record had been kept, but the record is there to be read by the student of geology in the walls of the mile-deep canyon of its upper reaches, registered as the footprints of time. The rocks and shells of the ages past tell us how high or how low its red turbid waters have rolled in its maddening glee, or silently glided to the sea. The records are there to show that in the past, during the revolving epochs of time, it has freely poured its vast contents into the ancient sea at Salton.

    S COUNTY PROFILE YUMA COUNTY, ARIZONA EST:1864 History Yuma’s first settlers were the Native American Tribes whose descendants continue to occupy the Cocopah Reservation in Yuma County, and the nearby Quechan Reservation. Yuma’s first recorded historic event was in 1540 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Alarcon became the first European to see the area of the City and County of Yuma. It was clear that Yuma was a great natural crossing of the Colorado River and an ideal location for a city. In 1701, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino was the first person to recognize the Yuma Crossing as a gateway to California. About a hundred years later, Father Francisco Garces led Juan Bautista de Anza and his pioneering expedition to the Yuma Crossing in their search for a land route to California. Garces founded two missions at the Crossing in 1779, but was killed in the last major Indian uprising shortly after. Kit Carson rediscovered the Yuma Crossing in the 1850’s when Yuma became the major river crossing for California gold-seekers. From 1540 to 1854 Yuma was under Spanish and Mexican control. Through the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, Yuma became a territorial possession of the United States. Yuma County became one of the original four counties in the State of Arizona when it was created in 1864. In these early years, the City of Yuma held several different names. From 1854 through 1858 Yuma was known as Colorado City. From 1858 to 1873 it was named Arizona City. Finally in 1873 the Territorial Legislature settled on Yuma.
