Les Musées royaux d’Art et d’Histoire De Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en comprennent le Musée du Cinquantenaire, le Musée Geschiedenis bevatten het Jubelparkmuseum, het des Instruments de Musique, la Tour Japonaise, le Muziekinstrumentenmuseum, de Japanse Toren, het Pavillon chinois, le Musée d’Art Japonais et la Porte Chinees Paviljoen, het Museum voor Japanse Kunst de Hal. en de Hallepoort.     BE CONTEMPORARY BE.BRUSSELS Brussels has been a real crossroads for contemporary art for some years now. In the heart of Europe, the capital city has everything going for it: high-quality artists, numerous collectors, an international audience and great exhibition spaces. The combination of these various criteria is attracting a new wave of galleries, both national and international, which have come to set up in the capital. Thus, galleries, artists, private viewings, exhibitions and fairs are all contributing to the attractiveness and boundless vitality of the city and offering visitors the opportunity to share their passion for art. The WIELS Art Centre has also helped to put Brussels on the world map of contemporary art, while other art centres and private collections are also opening their doors. In the Belgian capital, contemporary art is alive and evolving in all its forms. It’s even spilling out onto the streets and walls of the city. Brussels also intends to fill a gap with the opening, scheduled for 2019, of a Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This will probably be housed in a magnificent building with a surface area of 16,000 m² alongside the canal.     ART DECO PARCOURS Enjoy this nice cycling tour of approximately 40 kilometres alongside the most beautiful Art Deco buildings of Brussels. This cycling tour starts at the biggest Art Deco building of Western Europe, the Basilica of Koekelberg. The tour continues alongside some famous buildings of Brussels, like Flagey or Bozar, but doesn‟t forget the less known Art Deco constructions of the city. ROUTE: 1. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Koekelberg The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence. Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. It has also an important cultural function. It‟s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels! At the basilica, there are 500 free parking places. Therefore, its an excellent take off location of this beautiful Art Deco cycling tour. The basilica is also easily accessible by public transport. Visit the impressive interior of the basilica, and go with the elevator to the panorama just under the dome, from where you have an excellent view over Brussels and Brabant. The basilica is open every day, in winter from 10 to 16 hours and in summer from 9 to 17 hours.

    USA honours Belgium Nr. 16 / May – June 2011 Belgium strengthens its ties with the USA At the end of June, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium led a Belgian economic mission to the USA. The objective was to highlight the extraordinary opportunities for investment, trade and innovation offered by Belgium’s dynamic economy. Over nine days, the delegation visited New York, Washington DC and Boston. Numerous seminars, visits and networking events were organised as part of this mission. For example, the Belgian delegation visited the headquarters of Johnson & Johnson and IBM. HRH Prince Philippe opened the Belgian pavilion at the International Biotechnology Industry Convention and presided over the signing of numerous cooperation agreements between Belgian and US companies or institutions, notably between: • 4DDynamics & Digital Signal Corporation • Septentrio & Altus & BMI/SBI • Van Hool & Coach USA • Press Club Brussels Europe & The National Press Club • Brewery Corsendonk & L Knife and Son • Brussels‐Capital Region & District of Columbia • Visit Brussels & Destination DC HRH Prince Philippe with James C. Greenwood, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. In addition to the purely economic aspects, the mission was also aimed at highlighting themes of a more social nature such as child literacy, the fight against cancer, poverty eradication, philanthropy and culture. It was in this context that HRH Princess Mathilde participated in events on microfinance and social entrepreneurship. The Princess visited a home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor and attended a meeting of the Council of Women World Leaders, during which she gave a very committed speech on combating violence against women.

Victor Horta, with his organic style, and Paul Hankar, with his more geometric style, created a new architectural language, which soon became internationally famous, earning Brussels the title of European Art Nouveau Capital to this day. Art Nouveau, meaning “new art”, was a fleeting moment in art history, lasting just over ten years and falling out of favour just before World War I.

The spectacularly diverse show is staged at the foundation’s home in the Villa Empain, an Art Deco gem in Elsene. It includes work by 27 artists, including Salvador Dali, contemporary British artist Grayson Perry, Brussels’ Thierry Bosquet and Antwerp-based David Claerbout. Media spans painting, sculpture, photography and film. “This show is about the act of looking, so we’re not putting much information on the walls,” co-curator Sam Bardaouil says. “It’s your point of view that’s important.” The exhibition was also created with the villa and Belgium in mind, Bardaouil adds. It features mosque lamps designed for one of Baron Empain’s collaborators, fascinating photos of schoolchildren visiting Tervuren’s Royal Museum of Central Africa and Bosquet’s “The Uprising in front of La Monnaie in 1830”, commemorating Belgium’s independence. (He painted it in 1980, though in Neoclassical style.) ‘Looking is political’ Particularly striking are rare editions of Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin. “The art of looking is also political,” Bardaouil explains.

    WHAT Architect WHERE Notes Zone 1: City Center- Bruxelles-Ville Galerie Ravenstein was built in 1958 as a shopping center. Its original aim was to give a new boost to the neighbourhood, which was heavily affected by the destructive works for the Nord-Midi (north-south) junction. Designed as a shopping gallery which could house 81 shops, it was built between 1954 and 1958 in the International style, according to Alexis and Philippe plans by the architects Alexis and Philippe Dumont, who designed the *** Galerie Ravenstein Rue Ravenstein 18 Dumont nearby building which houses Shell’s offices. From rue Ravenstein, a huge porch gives access to a staircase under a cupola which compensates for the ten-metre height difference that exists between the two streets. When it opened, it accommodated over 80 shops. The innovative skylight and stellar artwork incorporated into the design of the arcade are striking features to be admired. A cinema documentation centre has recently opened with thousands of books, magazines and more than a million photographs, which can be perused in the reading room. Forty displays trace the early days of Victor Horta cinema i.e. the main inventions that led to the discovery of *** CINEMATIC and Robbrecht & Rue Baron Horta 9 cinematography by the Lumière brothers. For the renovation and Daem (renovation) refurbishment of the Film Museum, located in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, the architects used new and old means. The light and the visual angles in Victor Horta's building were used to let Cinematek connect with the rest of the structure.
