Picket-Line Press OperationCheer.com Page 2 WORKING TOGETHER TO DEFEND THE NE XT GENERATION By Sid Ryan - President, Ontario Federation of Labour Toronto, ON - This year’s Christmas holidays will come at a time when anxiety about the future of jobs is on everyone ’s mind. For the first time in history, today’s children may find themselves less well off than their parents’ generation. Job losses, two-tier wages and increasingly precarious employment could mean that good jobs will be gone before today’s youth enter t he workforce. Over the past year, when CAW, CUPW and CUPE members have pushed back against this attack on the next generation, Prime Minister Harper has sid ed with employers and stripped workers of their colle ctive bargaining rights. Meanwhile, corporate crooks with bad labour records continue to find their stockings filled with gifts from the Harper government. Corporate taxes, which have been cut ten times since the year 2000, were dropped again this year to an all-time low of 25 percent in combined federal and provincial rates, down from 42 percent a decade ago. However, rather than converting these massive savings into new jobs and investments, CEOs and shareholders are pocking this public money and invest ing 7.7 percent less in job-creating machinery, equipment and technology. It looks like this year the top one percent will be getting fat on Christmas turkey while the rest of us get starved out of house and home. Without corporations paying their fair share, the government is left with a $4 billion annual shortfall that will translate into the layoff of 80,000 federal public service employees and thousands of provincial public sector workers. Challenging these cuts isn’t just about sa ving jobs, it is about defending the communities helped by public services and calling on our government to serve the public good, not private profit. For workers and their families who are caught up in protracted labour disputes, the outpouring of solida rity demonstrated on picket lines and through Operation Christmas Cheer is a lifeline that gives the strength needed to continue fighting for a better future for us all. Unions need to bring this optimistic and principled spirit – which was so wonderfully personified by Jack Layton, but is being lived every day by labour activists and volunteers – from the bargaining table to the streets. It is time to mobilize together to put pressure on all levels of government to protect good jobs, public services and retirement security for the next generation. This gesture not only put a smile on these CAW members’ faces, it also ensured that they felt part of a bigger and very supportive labour family. This support came at a crucial time for these workers. The lock out ended in May 2011 with all members returning to work. Thanks again and in solidarity. Abbot Harvey, President of CAW Local 252 USW District 6 – Eastern Canada On behalf of USW mem bers and their families across District 6, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your organization for the tremendous work you do to provide the much needed relief during this special time of the year. In 2010, your organization worked clo sely with volunteers from the District. Together we were able to put smiles on the faces of our members during the holiday season. Our Sisters and Brothers at US Steel (Hamilton), ECP (Brantford), Lind Furniture (Mississauga), Multiserv (Nanticoke), Infini ty Rubber (Toronto), Commonwealth Veneer (Pembroke) and Sears (Vaughn) all appreciated the generous donations of food, grocery gift cards and toys your organization provided. This Christmas season we still have a number of locals on strike in the Distr ict and they are in dire need of your assistance. Our Sisters and Brothers at Infinity Rubber (Toronto) are fast approaching two years on the picket line and our members at Alumicor (Toronto) have been on strike for eight months. Commonwealth Veneer (Pembr oke) has been on strike since April 2009 and more recently Inkas (Ottawa) since October 3rd 2011. In each case our members and their families continue to battle their brutal and uncaring employers. In most cases these employers’ only commitment is to the ir shareholders and their bottom line. They forget about the people and the communities they are destroying in the race to the bottom. Your generosity and tenacity gives our members the courage they need to “Stand Up and Fight Back” against their unscrupul ous employers. Once again, many, many thanks for your support and assistance. In Solidarity, Wayne Fraser - Director OPSEU 426 – Rockland • Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You know that feeling you get when you feel kind of down on your luck and then all of a sudden you get a windfall. Your heart melts and your soul soars. You feel like you can take anything on. Well, that's how we felt when you came to visit us on the picket. To know that all those people out there, who gave of their time and money, coming to our aid gives us hope and confirms that we do belong to one great big OPSEU family of brothers and sisters who stand by each other. What an aw esome team you have to help put all this together. My sisters and I would like to wish you and you family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks to your team, we will have a better Christmas with our family as well although times are tough for us now. Cheers to you and all who have had a hand with this significant event.
