The inscriptions decisively define the tophet as a place of worship, a sanctuary where sacrifices were made to specific deities in specific rites. In fact, archaeological research now provides us with relatively substantial knowledge of the geographical and chronological distribution of these sacred sites and of their structure. Present in some central Mediterranean Phoenician settlements (including on Sardinia) from their foundation, or shortly after, they persist and multiply in North Africa at a later period, generally after the destruction of Carthage1. Women of Carthage in Western Imagination Marta García Morcillo ‘Salammbô in her splendour was blended with Tanit, and seemed the very genius of Carthage, and its embodied soul’ Flaubert, Salammbô, ch. 15 (transl. E. Powys Mathers) Preface Dido, Sophonisba and the anonymous wife of Hasdrubal – the general who defended the city in 146 BCE – have for centuries inspired the imagination of artists and travellers searching for traces of the grandeur of Punic Carthage. When, in 1807, Chateaubriand visited Tunis and the famous Acropolis of Byrsa, he was inevitably disappointed by the desolate scenery he encountered. Carthage’s indecipherable ruins were certainly no match for the striking memories left by Hannibal and his military campaigns, but also for those left by the heroic women who embodied the spirit of the city and its tragic fate.1 A similar experience in 1862 inspired Flaubert’s most uncanny creature, the fictional Salammbô, who was about to become the epitome of fin-de-siècle feminised eroticism as moulded by Orientalism. Salammbô was the titular character of a historical novel set during the Mercenary War (240 to 238 BCE), through which Flaubert aimed to ‘resurrect Carthage’. Like the legendary and historical 135 women that preceded and succeeded her, Salammbô was affected by the character and destiny of the Punic city, but also by something dark that inhabits the depths of every human soul. In the following pages, I will discuss the afterlives of the historical, legendary and fictional women of Carthage in the modern arts. The chapter is divided into four sections that propose four types of characterisations, following a diachronic approach: the tragic, the exotic, the vanished and the resurrected woman.

    ISSN 2239-5393 Tophets in the ‘Punic World’ Josephine Crawley Quinn (Worcester College, University of Oxford) Abstract There is no evidence for a contemporary ancient concept analogous to our ‘Punic World’, and such modern ethno-cultural categorizations can obscure more interesting ancient communities of identification and practice. This essay looks at a case study of such a community, the small set of Phoenician-speaking cities in the central Mediterranean that established child-sacrifice sanctuaries. I start not from an assumption that these so-called tophets reflected generic colonial identities but from the specific identifications that the sanctuaries made between themselves. I argue that these cannot be satisfactorily explained simply in the context of a diasporic ‘Punic World’, or solely through the actions of Carthage, and that taken on their own terms these cultural phenomena have the potential to reveal new narratives in the western Mediterranean. The problems of the Punic World Despite its popularity among scholars1, the ‘Punic World’ wouldn’t have made sense to the people who are supposed to have lived there, and this paper is an attempt to go beyond and below that abstract concept to get to their own stories. We can start with the problem of defining the modern term ‘Punic’, which does not map onto contemporary ancient vocabulary: Jonathan Prag demonstrated some years ago that there is no good evidence for anyone ever calling themselves (or for that matter their culture) ‘Punic’2, and more recently that there is no basic difference in sense between Greek Phoinix and Latin Poenus or Punicus: both could be applied interchangeably to eastern or western Phoenicians until at least the middle of the first century BCE, long after the destruction of Carthage3.

Reynolds, University of North Carolina You shall not give any of your offspring to sacrifice them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord (Lev. 18:21, NRSV) Leviticus 18:21 is the first of several mentions in the Hebrew Bible of a child sacrifice directed êìîì.1 Through the course of history, most interpreters have chosen to read êìîì in precisely the same way that the NRSV chooses to: a compound of the preposition ì and a divine name êìî. Certain archaeological discoveries at the beginning of the 20th century, however, have modified our understanding of what the term êìîì might have originally connoted. After nearly a century of debate, however, the question still remains: Was a god named Molek offered (human) sacrifices in Israel? Serious discussion of the question began properly in 1935 with a mon- ograph by Otto Eissfeldt.2 His daring title, “Molk as Sacrificial-term in Punic and Hebrew and the End of the God Molok,” declared that such a god was a later invention. Several contributions have been made to the subject over the last three quarters of the century, but there has been a renewed interest since the mid-1980’s. Brimming with visceral images of war and lust, vast riches and bizarre rituals, violence and tragedy verging on melodrama, Flaubert’s bestseller about the North African power that rivaled Rome in the third century BC received mixed critical reviews. Unlike the bored, provincial Emma Bovary, Flaubert’s new heroine Salammbô—a high priestess of strange Punic rites—inspired operas by Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky. The femme fatale of Carthage was featured in voluptuous Art Nouveau and Symbolist paintings, Rodin’s erotic sketches, and she even influenced Parisian fashions. In the illustrated 1927 edition that I pored over in the 1960s, Mahlon Blaine’s diabolical Aubrey Beardsley-on-Ecstasy drawings rendered Flaubert’s evocative tale even more eidetic. Largely forgotten now, Salammbô still has the power to scandalize critics (and thrill certain audiences— consider the video game Salammbô: Battle for Carthage recently created by award-winning French graphic artist Philippe Druillet).
