    MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017 What did we spot on the Sarawak and regional heritage scene in the last five months? SARAWAK Land clearing observed early March just uphill from the Bongkissam archaeological site, Santubong, raised alarm in the heritage-sensitive community because of the known archaeological potential of the area (for example, uphill from the shrine, partial excavations undertaken in the 1950s-60s at Bukit Maras revealed items related to the Indian Gupta tradition, tentatively dated 6 to 9th century). The land in question is earmarked for an extension of Santubong village. The bulldozing was later halted for a few days for Sarawak Museum archaeologists to undertake a rapid surface assessment, conclusion of which was that “there was no (…) artefact or any archaeological remains found on the SPK site” (Borneo Post). Greenlight was subsequently given by the Sarawak authorities to get on with the works. There were talks of relocating the shrine and, in the process, it appeared that the Bongkissam site had actually never been gazetted as a heritage site. In an e-statement, the Sarawak Heritage Society mentioned that it remained interrogative and called for due diligences rules in preventive archaeology on development sites for which there are presumptions of historical remains. Dr Charles Leh, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Museum Department mentioned an objective to make the Santubong Archaeological Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2020.     Eco-Architecture VII 1 THE ENVIRONMENT AND FENG SHUI APPLICATION IN CHEONG FATT TZE MANSION, PENANG, MALAYSIA AZIZI BAHAUDDIN & TEH BOON SOON School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia ABSTRACT Feng Shui, literarily translated as wind and water, forms part of the Chinese traditional architecture theory. The philosophy aims to achieve harmonious equilibrium among nature, buildings and people. It continues to be used in dwelling site selections and layout of buildings as well as in the environmental planning, especially in the Form School Feng Shui school of thought. It focuses on site analysis, landscapes and building placements with emphasis on designing with nature and the environment. This Feng Shui approach can be traced in the building design of the Peranakan style architecture of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, a unique architecture in George Town, Penang. It is a mix of Chinese, Malay and colonial building styles. Unfortunately, this mansion has not been verified with the Feng Shui approach in relating the architecture with nature, despite a claim that was made of its application and for other buildings of the same style. This study addresses the cultural sensitivity of this architecture as a case study in embracing nature for its Feng Shui application. Qualitative analysis was employed to determine whether the design of this mansion corresponded well with favourable architectural conditions placed in the environment as stated in the Form School approach. The method applied included measured drawings, ethnography study of the Peranakan culture, interviews with identified Feng Shui masters and the mansion’s owners. The mansion’s architectural design conformed to the philosophy adapted from the Form School approach, especially in the architectural language.

Penang is selected as case study due to the fine balance in population numbers between the Malays and the Chinese which is reflected in their cultural foregrounding in the Penang State Museum. This ethnic balance is also reflected by the multiethnic composition of the state museum board. Yet behind this façade one could detect the existence of culture contests. Such contests are also found within the different ethnic groups like the Peranakan and non-Peranakan Chinese or the Malays and the Indian-Muslims. This essay also examines visitor numbers and the attractiveness of the Penang Story. The essay is based on the scrutiny of museum exhibits, museum annual reports and conversations with former and present members of the State Museum Board. Like most other countries in the world, Malaysia has a rich legacy of historic buildings with outstanding craftsmanship and architecture quality. They form an impressive historic features and heritage of the past work of man. It is important to conserve and preserve historic buildings because they provide a sense of identity and continuity in a fast changing world for future generations. However some of these buildings are at risk from defects and are not being well cared for due to lack of technical knowledge and high cost of repair and maintenance. The purpose of this paper intends to highlight the existing conditions of historical buildings in Malaysia with the main focus on the conditions of building defects and conservation approach to these buildings. To do so, a pilot survey has been conducted on several heritage towns and cities based on the existing heritage trail in Malaysia. The broad objective of this pilot survey is to examine the level of building defects and the location of building defects that normally occur at various types of historical buildings in Malaysia.

The experiences of adaptively re-using historic buildings on the Mainland and overseas have their respective and distinctive characteristics and are therefore good references for Hong Kong in carrying out heritage conservation. This chapter focuses on one Mainland case and three overseas cases, namely the Suzhou River Warehouses in China, the Tate Modern in the UK, Bushell’s Tea Warehouse in Australia and the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Malaysia, to explore how the local government, organisations and the public make use of the concept of “adaptive re-use” for different types of historic buildings. These international examples reflect the importance of heritage conservation in the enhancement of both the sustainability of a city and the quality of life in the community.     PenangArtSociety @ Malaysia Oldest Art Society Celebrating 56 years Foreword First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dato’ Kho Wee Khian and all members for their support and trust. Dato’ Kho is the last remaining founder of Penang Art Society and even though he relinquished his position as President at the age of 95,he is still driving and dancing. How remarkable is that? I thank him for his guidance throughout the years and look forward to his continuing contribution to this society. The Penang Art Society is the oldest art society in Malaysia and it was established not just for artists but for all those who appreciate all forms of art including, fine art, calligraphy, poetry, music, photography, bonsai, feng shui and nature stone so on. The purpose of establishing this society was to bring art lovers together and to provide them with a platform with the intention of creating an awareness of art in Malaysia. When the society was established 57 years ago, Penang was an important destination for both local and foreign artists. Famous artists including Chang Dai-chi’en, Xu Baihong, and Chao Shao-Ang were among those who flocked to the Pearl of the Orient and helped to play a role in setting up the Society. Today, the Society has about 300 members and is still growing. My aim is not only to strengthen the Society’s position and influence in Malaysian art scene, but also to make the Society a platform for promoting Malaysian art abroad. The only way to succeed in this challenge is to echo our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib’ Tun Razak’s ‘1 Malaysia’ concept.
