Link to Website Page with Volunteer Information: http://www.salvationarmysanantonio.org/volunteer-sign-up/ Description of  Register to Ring during the Red Kettle Campaign is one of our most necessary volunteer opportunities this Volunteer time of year. You can do this as an individual; family; business; or even church connect group. You choose Opportunities: the location & time intervals. Funding received during this event provides support for several of our programs throughout the year.  https://www.registertoring.com/WebPages/Default.aspx  We provide life skill classes for our clients residing in our homeless shelter; permanent supportive housing units; rapid rehousing clients; veterans; & BGC youth. These classes range from financial literacy; budget management; reading food labels; meal planning & prep; gardening; computer literacy; employability skills (resume writing; application submission; interviews); & skills that could prepare families/individuals to function more successfully in society. We take many of these skills for granted, however learning these could be the catalyst in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Just one example is how parents have commented many times by developing a family budget & including their children has made a tremendous difference in spending their money wisely. Individuals; parents; & children are finally learning the difference between want vs needs.  If anyone or a group of people would like to coordinate & provide instructions in these areas, please contact Amanda.  We host bi-weekly food distribution for clients enrolled in our food pantry services. We partner with the San Antonio Food Bank & they deliver large quantities of fresh produce; frozen meats; & fruits. We can't operate this program without our faithful volunteer groups. We also have a fully stocked food pantry that requires having emergency food bags readily made for daily distribution when someone requires assistance. This is an ongoing daily need. We welcome school groups; church groups; company volunteers; families or individuals to assist us in this massive endeavor.  We have partnered in the past with SAFB to teach our BGC youth about gardening; meal preparation & planning in an attempt to encourage healthy eating habits. We would like to have someone volunteer doing the same. According to SA2020, this is definitely an area of interest. Our club is located near Woodlawn Lake Park. Healthy eating choices, combined with increased outdoor activity, is critical to reduce not only childhood obesity, but preventing diseases such as diabetes; high blood pressure; cardiac events; lung or kidney diseases.  For those of us who had the privilege of being taught home economics in school, we embrace the knowledge gained. Without passing this wisdom down to the next generation, we are preparing them to fail in simple tasks such as shopping for/preparing a simple meal; knowing the satisfaction of raising their own fruits/veggies; & feeling equipped/empowered to face living independently.  Please consider volunteering with our youth in any of these areas.
