In contrast, court watchers in India-spurred by developments in a special type of legal ac- tion developed in the late 1970s known as public interest litigation (PIL)-have only recently begun to question the judiciary's ability to promote progressive social change. R. Rahman became the first Indian composer to win Best Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for his music in the film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). This event not only granted Rahman another prestigious accolade for his accomplishments as a popular film music composer (i.e., he has been awarded many times over in India for his music), but it gave Rahman new star-status recognition among a Western audience. Although enormously famous in India and well-known among the South Asian diaspora located throughout many parts of the world, Rahman remained, up until that time, virtually unknown among mainstream U.S. audiences. U.S. audiences today are perhaps more likely than a decade ago to recognize the sounds and images of Indian cinema known as Bollywood, a cultural artifact, once considered “kitsch,” that increasingly traverses international popular cultures. Consequently, the appeal of Rahman’s Bollywood music among a wider global audience (as presented in Slumdog Millionaire) coincides with the global circulation and consumption of Bollywood films and music in recent years. I suggest that the appeal for Rahman’s music outside of India cannot be explained by the Western fascination with the exotic “Other," but instead involves a cultural affinity for a type of style and sound set forth in Rahman’s music.

A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts m Media Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand. Lauren Anderson 1999 Abstract. Popular music has a strong presence in many contemporary films, frequently replacing, or displacing, the 'classical' soundtrack. The question arises of whether a popular music soundtrack achieves similar functions to traditional, 'classical' film music. Investigating this question is the primary aim of this thesis. An outline of film music theory is followed by an overview of how meaning is produced in popular music. These two areas of discussion are then brought together in the neoformalist analyses of the textual relations between the popular music soundtrack and the narrative, characterisation, and themes of three contemporary films: Sliding Doors (1997, Peter Howitt), Empire Records (1995, Allan Moyle), and Topless Women Talk About Their Lives (1997, Harry Sinclair). The uses and functions of the music in these soundtracks are then compared to the conventions of 'classical' Hollywood film music. This thesis will show that the popular songs in the soundtracks of the three films generally fulfil one or more of six functions which are usually performed by 'classical' Hollywood film music. There are some important differences, however, as the songs frequently draw on features which are specific to popular music.

    Sangamam Kanini Trip Repor October 27, 2016 I am a volunteer with the Chennai Chapter of Asha. My name is Venkat Ramasamy. I visited 3 schools on October 27, 2016 that we support as part of the Sangamam Kanini Project. The project is stewarded by Rajaraman Krishnan. The schools I visited were Narayanapuram, Manjakuppam and Ramanjeri. The purpose of the visit was to see how our computer teachers were doing and to see the progress the students were making with the technology and tools we have provided our teachers. Here are the observations from the schools. Narayanapuram School I visited the classroom with 4th and 5th standard children along with Asha hardware technician Muthu. There were 11 children present on the day that I visited. Our computer teacher Jayashree was in the classroom. She is a new teacher and had just taken over from another Sangamam Kanini teacher, Sakila, just a week earlier. The Headmistress was also present in class. As we walked in the children were playing games on the computer. They had access to just one computer which Asha had given to Jayashree. Many of the children were huddled around one computer. They turned around to greet us and quickly turned back to pay attention to the game they were playing. Clearly, the children were motivated to be on the computer. The game they were playing was one that is part of the TuxMath software package Asha has provided. The purpose of the game is to improve the speed at which children add, subtract or multiply numbers. The game gets harder as you progress and takes you to next levels.

    Pardes vs. Swades: an Analysis of South Asian American Gendered Ethnicity Formation in Visual Media Portrayals Honors Research Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with Honors Research Distinction in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Tanya Srivastava and Andrew Philip The Ohio State University May 2014 Project Advisor: Professor Binaya Subedi, Department of Teaching & Learning 2 ABSTRACT: As the number of South Asian Americans in the United States grows, so does their presence in mainstream American media, their production of alternative sources of Asian American film, and their cachet to develop Indian film industry (Bollywood) abroad. All three sources of media employ and depict South Asian Americans in various portrayals; some have been noted to perpetuate patterns of representation around ethnic identification, gender roles, citizenship, and socio-cultural ties. The consumption trends and effects these South Asian American portrayals have on South Asian American second-generation youth is largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to collect data concerning the media consumption patterns of our defined population of South Asian American youth, and how they negotiate gendered portrayals of their ethnic compatriots in their formation of ethnic identity. Using socialization theories and other data from previous ethnographies of South Asian Americans, we employ online surveys and personal interviews geared towards monitoring the consumption of South Asian American media portrayals and their effects on how South Asian American youth view themselves and their community. Findings of this study are among the first in the field of South Asian American Studies to indicate how South Asian American media portrayals affect the growing number of South Asian American youth, and how the pervasive growth of South Asian American media portrayals may be affecting the gendered ethnic identity formation of youth who consume these types of media.
