    The Paris Tasting—May 24, 1976 Mike Grgich earns world-wide recognition when the Chardonnay that he made beat the best of France. The judges deliberate during the Paris Tasting Steven Spurrier, a wine expert from England who ran a fine wine shop in Paris, decided it would be fun to organize a blind tasting to coincide with America’s Bicentennial celebrations in 1976. For the tasting, he gathered together the best French judges, the finest French wines, and to salute America on its 200th anniversary he added in a few wines from some upstart winemakers in California. Steven hoped the tasting would bring favorable attention to his wine shop. But he didn’t have any idea of the impact that his Bicentennial tasting would have on the world of wine. André Tchelistcheff, along with Jim Barrett, had hand-carried an armload of California wines to Paris for the competition. The blind tasting was held at the InterContinental Hotel in the center of Paris. The morning competition was devoted to white wines and the afternoon was devoted to the reds. And Steven Spurrier brought together the very best white wines of Burgundy: a 1973 Meursault- Charmes, a 1973 Beaune Clos des Mouches, a 1973 Bâtard-Montrachet, and a 1972 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles. Alongside these French legends there was the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay crafted by Mike Grgich, and other Chardonnays from California that the French judges had never heard of either. The judges expected to sniff and gag when they tasted the California wines. But it didn’t happen that way.

    Aglianico From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Aglianico (pronounced [aʎˈʎaːniko], roughly "ahl-YAH-nee- koe") is a black grape grown in the Basilicata and Campania Aglianico regions of Italy. The vine originated in Greece and was Grape (Vitis) brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The name may be a corruption of vitis hellenica, Latin for "Greek vine."[1] Another etymology posits a corruption of Apulianicum, the Latin name for the whole of southern Italy in the time of ancient Rome. During this period, it was the principal grape of the famous Falernian wine, the Roman equivalent of a first-growth wine today. Nikola MIROEVIÆ 1 Carole P. MEREDITH 2 SUMMARY The origin of Zinfandel, the important California wine cultivar, has been a question for several decades. Although Zinfandel has been linked to both Primitivo, grown in southern Italy, and to Plavac mali in Croatia, the puzzle of its origin has never been solved. Many scientists and writers have applied themselves to this question. Many hypotheses have been proposed and some erroneous ideas have been widely accepted. Much of the controversy will now be ended as a result of recent scientific research (Pejiæ and co-workers, 2000). Here we review the research and written documentation about Plavac mali, Zinfandel and Primitivo and their relationships and we present the results of recent research. As you drive up Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail, you note the wineries you pass, make plans to visit some of them, and start thinking about where to eat lunch. You stop at the Oakville Grocery for picnic supplies, jostling through the crowd at this trendy place. The sun is shining, you’re with your friends, and you’re having a great time. You take a Mondavi tour, or maybe you belly up to one of the tasting bars to get the sales hype along with your ounce and a half of the “blockbuster vintage that’s filled with cherry and raspberry and jammy black currant with a hint of Asian spice and violets on top of toasty oak with a touch of vanilla.” As you drive on to another winery, the countryside slips by scarcely noticed, except for its general beauty. In the midst of all this abundance and sheer pleasure, we’d like to give you something else to do. We’ve included two guided tours of the valley, which provide a visual connection to some of the features and places discussed in this book. (One is presented here; the second follows chap- ter 5.) Although we hope that our descriptions in the text are informative, nothing replaces ac- tually seeing the “real thing” on the ground. A firsthand glimpse, combined with a little knowl- edge, can make Napa’s features much more than just a hill, or a rock beside the road, or another steep and beautiful ridge.

Mike’s most celebrated achievement came in the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 or the "Judgment of Paris," a wine competition organized in Paris on May 24, 1976 by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier. French judges performed two blind tasting comparisons: one of top- quality French and California Chardonnays and another of Bordeaux wines from France and Cabernet Sauvignon from California. The Chardonnay winner was the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay made by winemaker Mike Grgich with the highest total score of any wine in the tasting, red or white. This event turned the wine world on its ear and catapulted Napa Valley into the front ranks of the world's wine-producing regions, pumping new energy into the California wine industry, and energizing winemakers in many other parts of the word. Mike turned 90 years old this April 1st, but he continues to guide Grgich Hills Estate and plan for its future.
