CENTRAL PROVINCE INITIATE FORMATION 4. STUDY “WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE EVEN ZEAL IS NOT GOOD.” (Proverbs 19: 2) STUDY is the next pillar of the Dominican Order. It is fitting that it should follow Prayer because Dominicans see both as flowing one into the other. To a Dominican Study is the contemplation of ‘Veritas’ (Truth) and God is Truth. So our Study is another form of Prayer which is why the Dominican takes Study so seriously. THE CHURCH Of course Study is not simply the province of the Dominican but is necessary for all Christians, ordained, consecrated and lay. The Church assures us of this: “Since they are called by baptism to lead a life in keeping with the teaching of the gospel, the Christian faithful have the right to a Christian education by which they are to be instructed properly to strive for the maturity of the human person and at the same time to know and live the mystery of salvation”. (Canon 217) The Church encourages all to seek out and pursue this knowledge: “Lay people who are capable and trained may also collaborate in catechetical formation, in teaching the sacred sciences, and in use of the communications media.” (Catechism 906) This knowledge should be shared with others: “In accord with the knowledge, competence, and preeminence which they possess, [lay people] have the right and even at times a duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church, and they have a right to make their opinion known to the other Christian faithful with due regard to the integrity of faith and morals…( Canon 212) 1 The Church was founded to spread the kingdom of Christ throughout the world. -

religions Article Between Dualism and Immanentism Sacramental Ontology and History Enrico Beltramini Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Notre Dame de Namur University, Belmont, CA 94002, USA; [email protected] Abstract: How to deal with religious ideas in religious history (and in history in general) has recently become a matter of discussion. In particular, a number of authors have framed their work around the concept of ‘sacramental ontology,’ that is, a unified vision of reality in which the secular and the religious come together, although maintaining their distinction. The authors’ choices have been criticized by their fellow colleagues as a form of apologetics and a return to integralism. The aim of this article is to provide a proper context in which to locate the phenomenon of sacramental ontology. I suggest considering (1) the generation of the concept of sacramental ontology as part of the internal dialectic of the Christian intellectual world, not as a reaction to the secular; and (2) the adoption of the concept as a protection against ontological nihilism, not as an attack on scientific knowledge. Drawing inspiration directly from the works of John Henry Newman, this document not only affirmed the insights found in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), which church authorities embraced during the first decade of New- man’s life as a Catholic, but also his provocative Rambler article, “On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine” (1859), which resulted in episcopal accusations of heresy and Newman’s delation to Rome. The tension between Newman’s theory of development and his appeal for the hierarchy to consider the experience of the “faithful” ultimately centers on the “seat” of authority, and whose voices matter. As a his- torical theologian, I recognize in the 175 year reception of Newman’s theory of development, the controversial character of this historio- graphical assumption—or “metanarrative”—which privileges the hi- erarchy’s authority to teach, but paradoxically acknowledges the ca- pacity of the “faithful” to receive—and at times reject—propositions presented to them as authoritative truth claims.1 1 Maurice Blondel, in his History and Dogma (1904), emphasized that historians always act on metaphysical assumptions when applying facts to the historical St. -

Kathleen Mulhern investigates a late-nineteenth-century deployment of the seventeenth-century thought of Blaise Pascal by French neo-Pascalians (“Pascalisants”). Pascal had never completely disappeared from the French literary scene. Seventy years after his death, he served Voltaire as a foil in the Remarques sur les Pensées de Pascal (1734); Condorcet’s edition of the Pensées (1776) was but one stage in his ever-shifting relationship with Pascal-Voltaire.[1] In the post-revolutionary Romantic period, Pascal re-appeared in 1835; a new critical edition proposed by Victor Cousin followed ten years later (1844). From the mid-century onward, Pascal’s nationalist function as the French literary genius enjoyed multiple new editions: Vinet (1848), Sainte-Beuve (1848), Havet (1852), Droz (1886), Michaut (1896), and Brunschvicg (1904) (p. 7). For the purposes of Mulhern’s story, there seems to be a missing link here between 1776 and 1835. That link is suggested by Darrin McMahon’s observation that (largely Catholic) opponents of the philosophes during the 1770s-1780s overlooked Pascal’s Jansenist associations (and Rousseau’s own philosophic position) in service of combating “rationalism.” Though clearly differing in world view, both Pascal and Rousseau “argued convincingly that the heart had reasons that reason knows not, that when left to themselves our rational faculties left us lifeless and cold, uncertain and unsure. -

John Paul II Institute Washington, DC From the very heart of Christian faith and, at the same time, the heart of Greek thought now joined to faith, Manuel II was able to say: Not to act “with logos” is contrary to God’s nature. [T]he faith of the Church has always insisted that between God and us, between his eternal Creator Spirit and our created reason there exists a real analogy, in which unlike - ness remains infinitely greater than likeness, yet not to the point of abol - ishing analogy and its language (cf. Lateran IV). God does not become more divine when we push him away from us in a sheer, impenetrable voluntarism; rather, the truly divine God is the God who has revealed himself as logos and, as logos, has acted and continues to act lovingly on our behalf. This inner rapprochement between biblical faith and Greek philosophical inquiry was an event of decisive importance not only from the standpoint of the history of religions, but also from that of world history—it is an event which concerns us even today. 1 It is my view that the neoscholastic rationalism that was trying to reconstruct the praeambula fidei, the approach to faith, with pure rational certainty, by means of rational argument that was strictly inde - pendent of any faith, has failed; and it cannot be otherwise for any such attempts to do that kind of thing. -

Introduction Few notions about the history of philosophy are more widely held than the no- tion that Descartes began something important in the way we think about the mind. But what exactly did he begin? A good place to look for an answer to this question is the start of his caustic set of replies to Gassendi, where Descartes cla- rifies a point of terminology. On his usage, he explains, the term ‘mind’ should be taken not in the traditional way, as referring to a part of the soul, but as refer- ring to the whole soul. Hence the two terms, ‘mind’ (mens)and‘soul’(anima), are to be treated as co-referential: ‘I consider the mind not as a part of the soul, but as the whole soul that thinks’.1 To be sure, this is no mere point of terminology. On the contrary, his erasure of the distinction between mind and soul constitutes the most fundamental respect in which Descartes’s conception of mind has influ- enced our own. In fact, one might reasonably think of this passage as marking out a kind of dividing line between medieval psychology and modern philosophy of mind. In what follows I will consider some of the medieval background to Descartes’s position, and show how this dividing line, though significant, is less clear than one might suppose. But before turning back to that earlier tradition, it is worth a closer look at how Descartes accounts for his choice of terminology. -

Dust Jacket Introduction The majority of modern books on preaching fall rather easily into one of several categories: collections of sermons, suggested outlines for sermons, or the method of writing sermons. This volume, written by Humbert of Romans, the fifth Master General of the Order of Friars Preachers, is more fundamental. It is concerned with the basic principles and consequently, even though it was written in the thirteenth century, it is timely and applicable today. Humbert treats the main aspects of preaching and displays a happy capacity for combining general principles with minute details. The general tone is lofty with a wealth of quotations from Scripture and the Fathers and the whole is studded with many excellent practical suggestions. Text from the 1951 Newman Press edition, Walter Conlon, O.P., editor Editor’s Preface To one who has no close association with the Order of Preachers, the ap- pearance of this volume should give rise to at least one question, namely, who is Humbert of Romans? This is quite understandable since Humbert is almost exclusively a “family” celebrity; his fame rests upon the literary and administrative talents he exercised within and in behalf of the Dominican Order. His life, though rich in sanctity and solid achievement, was devoid of the spectacular. The exact date of his birth (in the small village of Romans) is unknown, but it was at the end of the twelfth century. -
