In October, astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir completed the first all-female spacewalk when they left NASA's International Space Station for hours to make a repair. Koch also is on her way toward 328 days aboard the International Space Station — the longest single space mission by a woman. Meanwhile, NASA is planning a moon mission called "Artemis," named after the Greek goddess, which aims to put "the next man and the first woman on the moon" by 2024. The aerospace industry, made up of businesses that design aircraft and spaceships, also boasts an unseen before number of women in high-ranking positions. Leanne Caret leads the defense and space division of Boeing, a top aerospace company. Gwynne Shotwell heads SpaceX, which makes rockets and spacecrafts. Mochii is the world’s smallest production electron microscope, scheduled to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) where it will serve as an ISS National Laboratory (ISSNL) facility upon successful demonstration [1-3]. With high native resolution and chemical energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS-enabled “S” model), this tiny coffee-maker sized instrument will provide in-situ engineering analysis and microgravity mission science on-orbit. Scientific inquiries include morphological, textural and chemical characterization of extraterrestrial samples and impact craters produced by exposure to the space environment, as well as samples from living creatures. Mochii will also enhance crew and vehicle safety by rapidly and accurately identifying microscopic mission threats to guide mission decisions, especially in time-critical situations where debris from damaged systems cannot be sent back. Examples of such critical situations are crewmember Luca Parmitano’s waterlogged extra-vehicular activity (EVA) suit in 2013 and the ISS starboard solar alpha rotary joint failure in 2007 where chemical analysis of microscopic particles played a central role in identifying point of failure, source, and problem resolution. Proxima mission Thomas Pesquet reaches International Space Station After completing 34 orbital revolutions of the Earth, the Soyuz spacecraft has docked with the International Space Station (ISS). Franceâ€™s ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, mission commander Oleg Novitsky (Roscosmos) and U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson (NASA) have safely entered the station and are now ready to start their six-month mission. Thomas Pesquet, 38, will be the 10th French astronaut to fly in space, the fourth to stay aboard the ISS and the first to spend six months there. His mission has been named Proxima after Proxima Centauri, the star nearest our Sun, continuing the tradition of naming European missions on the ISS after stars. Thomas will be in charge of more than 50 science experiments devised by ESA and CNES, and will be contributing to numerous research projects undertaken for other programme partners. CNES is closely involved in this mission, notably through the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations, located at the Toulouse Space Centre. CADMOS will be controlling 21 of the 55 experiments to be performed by Thomas Pesquet for ESA and devised and prepared seven of the experiments itself: AQUAPAD, MATISS, EVERYWEAR, PERSPECTIVES, ECHO, FLUIDICS and EXO-ISS (educational experiments).
