DUNDURN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Well, the 2013-2014 school year is drawing to a close and it is so hard to believe that another year has come and gone. Dundurn Elementary was a busy place with high levels of learning and engagement taking place throughout the year. The number of activities, guest speakers/presenters and events that our students were involved in is stag- gering and we hope everyone enjoyed them all.

Our latest function was our annual Try-all-athon at Blackstrap Provincial Park, on Friday, June 20th. It was a wet and muddy day but our grades 1-6 athletes persevered, completing the soggy course. Students from Hanley Com- posite School and Venture Heights School () joined us for the event. A big thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who helped organize and supervise the event as well as to our Try-all-athon coordinators, Mrs. Fiedelleck and Mrs. Shannon-Wobeser.

As always, this time of year brings with it some good-byes and best wishes to staff and students. Firstly, we wish our grade sixes the best of luck in their new adventures. We thank them for being a part of our “team” and the memories we will have of them will be with us forever. We know they will do great things and we look forward to hearing all about them. We also need to wish the best to some of our dynamic staff members as they too move on to new assignments and pursuits. Mrs. Adeline Schroeder is retiring after 21 years of service within the Prairie Spirit School Division. A huge thank you to Adeline for all of her work and smiles over the years as she will certainly be missed but we know she will be busy in her well-deserved retirement. Also, Mrs. Wendy Crawford is moving to South Corman Park School to teach grade 3/4 for next year. Wendy has done a wonderful job teaching grade 3, re- source and kindergarten over the past three years. As well, Miss Renee Lemieux will be leaving our team as she moves back to Regina. Renee taught grades 6, 5, 4, and 2 in the 1½ years she was with Dundurn Elementary. We appreciate her flexibility and wish her luck in whatever new adventure awaits her.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer break from school. We invite all students and family members to please join us on Tuesday, September 2nd at 8:15 am for our Pancake Breakfast to kick off the school year. We look for- ward to the 2014/2015 school year as it will be another action-packed year of high levels of fun, engagement and learning. A reminder to refer to our school website for all of the school information and news (www.spiritsd.ca/ dundurn) and to contact the school or Mr. Hill with any questions. HANLEY COMPOSITE SCHOOL

The end of this school year saw a combination of class trips, construction, exams, projects, reports cards, next fall’s class selections, supply lists, reminiscence and celebration. Hoping that the weather will cooperate and give every- one a chance to get away or enjoy some warm sunny days in July and August. We didn’t seem to have enough of them in June. Congratulations to our graduating class as they make transition from these last years of high school to their next life phase. Many of our students have plans to attend business college, technical school or university in the fall while others have obtained apprenticeship positions in a trade or will be working for the summer. We are proud of their accomplishments and wish them well in the future. Thanks to Mrs. Burgess and Mrs. Prakash for organizing this year’s graduation. We are sad to see Ms Wall leave to move to for a teaching position this fall. Thank you for all your con- tributions to our Resource Room and student needs including your extra curricular work and SRC advising. Mr. Woods-Fehr will assume the SERT duties in the fall. The remaining staff will assume their current roles with some minor class or course adjustments. The annual Triathlon was a successful at Blackstrap Lake with our elementary students participating in swimming, running and biking. Renovations to the power supply and plans to improve the heating systems as well as the building painting for the east wing have been finalized. There are plans to complete some landscaping on the west front lawn to ensure proper drainage away from the building and enclose a compound area of the IA shop. I’d like to express my appreciation again for your support of our school and staff each year. Please continue to keep the lines of communication open with us as we make the best choices we can for the education of your children. We invest a lot of ourselves in their growth and care about them and their successes as much as you do. That’s all for now. As always, Mr. Anderson and I would love to talk to you if you have time to drop by the office or give us a call. Take care and I’ll talk to you soon. Triathlon Canada Youth Elite Race Series Pike Lake, was the host of the first of four triathlon races in the Triathlon Canada National Junior and Youth Elite Race Series. 105 Youth and Junior athletes battled the frigid water and air temperature on June 14th and 15th. The conditions were so difficult to race in, but athletes battled it out to race for and represent their provinces. Winning the Junior Elite Male race was Russel Pennock of Calgary, only by a slight margin over reining Junior Elite champion Xavier Greneir-Talvera of Quebec. In the Female Junior Elite race, a battle between last year’s champion Emy Legualt of Quebec and team mate Elizabeth Boutin was amazing to watch with Emy powering through on the final kilometer of the run to edge out Elizabeth for the win!! In the Male Youth Elite race, Pavlos Antoniade of Quebec ran away with the win over 's Sam Seshadri. The two stayed close together in the wa- ter and on the bikes, but the run saw Pavlos clock an epic time to garner him the win!! The Female Youth Elite race was extremely exciting for all the Sas- katchewan Triathlon members to watch as their very own hometown girl Kay- cee Schroeder was in the lead pack of girls the entire race. Kaycee powered through the run to win by almost a full minute ahead of her closest competition Carley Wlad of Alberta. Kaycee would like to thank the community of Dundurn for all of their support, those who came out to her Steak Night at Big Mur's and to the Dundurn Lion's Club for their sponsorship. Kaycee will be travelling across Canada this summer to compete in the remaining three races in the Triathlon Canada Youth Elite race series. DUNDURN GOSPEL CHURCH is a warm and caring church family where people from all walks of life are welcomed, accepted and nurtured in faith. Our worship is a celebration, is cen- tered on the Bible, and you are always welcomed to "come as you are". Our services provide an opportunity for worship, spiritual growth, belonging, and fellowship. Our vision is to be a light- house for Jesus Christ and to influence our neighbors, our community, and our world for Him. Pastor Mike Johnston is a spirit-filled, ordained minister with the Association of Faith Churches and Ministries (AFCM) Canada and has been ministering in our church since 2002. He received the Lord at the age of 30 in Carrot River, SK. Prior to entering the ministry, Pastor Mike worked with the RCMP for 25 years before retiring as Sergeant in charge of Maple Creek De- tachment. He genuinely cares about people and has seen first-hand the power, protection and provision of God in his life and the lives of his family. Everyone is invited to join us Sunday mornings at 11:00 am for praise and worship in music and to be ministered to by the Word of God. If you are looking for a church home where you and your family will be loved, accepted and missed, where you can grow in your walk with God, and where you can make a difference for Jesus, come join us this Sunday morning. Regardless of your church affiliations, please feel free to also come to a prayer meeting on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm. Prayer is powerful and it works. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct your prayers for Dundurn, Shields, Thode, Hanley and White Cap. God hears the prayers of- fered to Him, and His eyes are upon those who call upon His Name. If you need prayer - come! If you want to add your support as an intercessor - come!

Wilson Museum News On Monday, June 23rd about 30 Grade 3 students from Dundurn Elementary School – and some guests from Martensville – visited the Wilson Museum. Louis Paquette and his grandson, Nick, gave them a tour of the museum and entertained the students – who all said they had a great time. Some of the comments included: “This is awesome!”; “We liked the native and wildlife display.”; and of course “Cool.” The visit was the sec- ond tour of the school this year, the first tour was held during the May (Saturday/ Sunday 24th & 25th) weekend “Blackstrap Art Studio Tour” where the students toured the Museum and participated in demonstrations of bird woodcarving, black- smithing, beadwork and glassblowing. This year has a number of new faces on the Wilson Museum Board. The Board members include: Louis Paquette (President), Tina Douglas (Secretary), Raymond Moskowec (Public Relations/Education/Tours), Wayne Olyniuk (Vice President) with Fran Ambler, Harry Friesen, Ann Friesen and Eric Wiens. The Wil- son Museum is a non-profit organization run by volunteers from the community to preserve and present Dundurn’s heritage and history. This year’s hours of operation are from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Everyone is welcome to drop by, bring visiting friends and relatives for a tour of the past – at the Wilson Museum. Submitted by Raymond Moskowec, 306-491-8651 Page 12

The Eighth Annual (2014) Blackstrap Art Studio Tour Summary

The eighth annual Blackstrap Art Studio Tours has been successfully completed. The tour involved 30 individual artists as well as multiple participants at the Hot Shop and the Dundurn Elementary School Students. A variety of other individu- als were involved in hostess/information duties.

The five sites included the Dundurn Elementary School, Dundurn Wilson Museum, Hiebert's Hot Shop, the Klette Studio, and the Dundurn Arts and Healing Centre. Demonstrations and information ses- sions were available to the public for 8 hours Saturday and 5 hours Sunday. All venues were free.

Wagon Wheel signs directed the public to the various sites, and we are thankful that the rain was not a major deterrent this year.

Evaluation data collected during the tour was complementary. People learned about the event from a variety of advertiz- ing initiatives; word of mouth, pamphlets, the articles by Edna Manning, and Shauna Powers of the Clarks Crossing paper. Painted signs placed at key sites gave advance notice of the event.

Three to four hundred visitors are estimated to have participated in the Tour. Visitors who received door prizes donated by the artists are listed below.

The organizers and artists wish to thank The Town, the Councillors of the Town and the R.M of Dun- durn for their support including the SK Lotteries Grant from the Dundurn and District Recreation Board. The large signs erected by the Town of Dundurn and RV of Shields were very much appreci- ated. Thanks again to Fred Wilson for ensuring that the roads were graded for us.

Hope to see you next year, as a participant or a visitor. We encourage any local artist to get in touch with our committee if you wish to be involved. This is strictly a volunteer organization, and many people assist the artists by providing help with demonstrations, making and placing signs, hostess duties or just plain set-up and take-down duties. We could not do it without the many community volunteers. It is a fun weekend for all of us, and we look forward to another year. Ques- tions can be directed to Harry at 306-492-4747 or Joan at 306-492-4665.

Dogs in Hot Vehicles Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car – even for “just a minute” – while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: on a 78 degree day the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes. On a 90 degree day the in- terior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads. Dundurn and Area Newsletters… Page 21
