Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories. Keywords Philippine cinema, Singapore cinema, transnational cinema, Asian horror, OFW film About the Author Patrick Campos is Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. He is currently Director of the Office of Extension and External Relations of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman, where he previously served as College Secretary. • The Divide Between the Gutless but Glossy Epics and the Braver but More Intimate Independent Productions Is So Immense
The divide between the gutless but glossy epics and the braver but more intimate independent productions is so immense. As a result, movie-going masses are fed with didactic rubbish that are designed primarily to treat viewers like kids who prefer their stories visualized like soap operas than read from a textbook, oblivious of the fact that there exists another vein of historical cinema that dares to ask more questions than provide the same answers over and over again. Jerrold Tarog’s Heneral Luna provides that essential middle ground. It is a film that is crafted with just enough meticulousness a reasonable budget can afford but does not pander to common but erroneous nowledgek and wisdom. Instead, it goes straight to the point of unravelling those details in history that were left out by those who hanged the heroes. Tarog’s film is an immense risk, one that is probably fueled not by quick profit butby a profound desire to unmask demons of idols. As ferocious leader of a seemingly hopeless army, he is rabid and stern. As a pal to his trusted lieutenants, he is unpredictably hilarious. As son to a devoted mother, he is heartbreakingly dear, echoing the same sentiments he has for his family as if it were for his motherland. - Rappler - Amidst pacing problems, Heneral Luna manages to tell a compelling story – allegorical and timely to present day – supported by a fantastic script, an impassioned score, and inspired cinematography. - At first glance, one might mistake Heneral Luna as your run-of- the-mill historical biopic that showcases a hero of yore whose bravery and passion unite his people in the face of dastardly foreign invaders.

In their Declaration of Principles, the members expressed the belief that cultural texts always call for active readings, “interactions” in fact among different readers who have the “unique capacities to discern, to interpret, and to reflect... evolving a dynamic discourse in which the text provokes the most imaginative ideas of our time.” The Film Desk has always committed itself to the discussion of film in the various arenas of academe and media, with the hope of fostering an alternative and emergent articulation of film critical practice, even within the severely debilitating culture of “awards.” binigay ng Film Desk ng Young Critics Circle (YCC) ang unang taunang pagkilala nito sa kahusayan sa pelikula noong 1991, ang taon pagkaraang maitatag ang YCC ng labinlimang tagapagrebyu at kritiko. • Reminder List of Productions Eligible for Awards
REMINDER LIST OF PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS All films that have qualified for consideration for 2011 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. Foreign Language films are eligible for awards in other categories provided they meet the requirements of Awards Rules Two and Three. Notes: A ABDUCTION Taylor Lautner. Lily Collins. Alfred Molina. San Juan, Jr. University of Connecticut and Washington State University United States of America [email protected] abstract Charles Sanders Peirce's ethics is based on his pragmaticist theory of meaning elucidated by his phenomenology and its transcoding into practice. An example of how meaning acquires practical effect is cited from Peirce's lecture on signs and their interpretation. His anti-imperialist stance against U.S. colonization of the Philippines has never been discussed before. This is the first time Peirce's politics is manifested in conjunction with his anti-nominalist explanation of signs and their ethical implications. Mike de Leon and Philippine Cinema Looming Over the Nation, Uneasy with the Folks: Locating Mike de Leon in Philippine Cinema1 Patrick F. Campos ABSTRACT The article draws on filmic, popular, and scholarly references in order to trace how Mike de Leon and his films have been regarded, since his landmark entrance into Philippine cinema as director, up to the present. Specifically, it locates De Leon within the subtly shifting discourse of nationalist film scholarship and historicizing, and discusses how he and his films are written about, identified, associated or networked with other filmmakers and films, or utilized in discourses about the Philippines, Philippine cinema, or Philippine culture. The article locates De Leon as (1) an insider of Philippine cinema history, (2) an outsider of the commercial film industry, and (3) a hero of the mythic Golden Age of the National Cinema. It also maps out his filmography within the nationalist agenda; appraises what filmmakers, commentators, and scholars have articulated about his films; and analyzes the thematic and stylistic trajectories of his later works. Finally, it discusses how De Leon is being written into today’s discourse of Philippine cinema. Keywords: Mike de Leon, film criticism, film history, nationalism, institutional dynamics/myths INTRODUCTION “Mike de Leon [is] not even [a member] of any guild, pero kapag naglabas [siya] ng pelikula ay sabik na sabik tayo (but we are so excited whenever he comes out with a new film),” independent filmmaker, Sigfried Barros Sanchez, asserted last year in a Yahoo- groups! online post.
