NEDA Director General Dr. Cayetano W. Paderanga reported during the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Congress that the Philip- pines has made considerable progress in meeting the MDGs, includ- ing the reduction of mortality rate among children aged five years and below, reversing the incidence and death rate associated with malaria, increasing tuberculosis treatment success rate, expanding access to sanitation, and providing equal opportunities for girls in the area of education. “However, it was also revealed that challenges remained to be hurdled in the area of universal access to elementary education, maternal mortality ratio, the rate of HIV cases, and environmental sustainability. The 2010 Philippine Progress Report on the MDGs in- dicated that poverty incidence among the population has gone up from 30.0 percent in 2003 to 32.9 percent in 2006,” Paderanga said. The increase in the poverty incidence, he said, is due to the conse- quences of the global economic and energy crises as well as natural disasters that hit the country.
