Villagers in Land Dispute Ask Hu Jintao’s Help

In an effort to stop their homes from being swallowed up by a Chinese mega-tourism project, Koh Kong villagers said they will submit a petition to the Chinese Embassy today, calling for intervention from visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Villager representative Tith Ten, 54 , from Kiri Sakor district’s Prek Khsach commune, said that a group of 20 villagers plan to bring a petition thumbprinted by 34 9 people to the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh as Mr. Hu arrives for his visit, which also coincides with next week’s Asean Summit.

Since 2008, the Chinese company Union Development Group (UDG) has begun clearing—with permission from the government—36,000 hectares of forest on the Koh Kong province coastline to build a $3.8 billion tourism zone with hotels, golf courses and an airport. …

The provincial office of rights group Licadho has called on Koh Kong provincial politicians to help more than 1,000 families being forcibly evicted to make way for a sprawling gambling resort and other development, representative said yesterday.

More than 130 families, from three villages in Kiri Sakor and Botum Sakor districts in Koh Kong province, had filed complaints to Licadho between April and December last year, asking for intervention after staff from Chinese company Tianjin Union Development Group and military police allegedly tried to force them off their land.

“We would like to ask the company to stop taking military police to burn down villagers’ homes, to stop forcing and threatening villagers – let them live on their land,” the letter says. Union Group is

Villagers take case to capital

Representatives from five communes in Koh Kong province engaged in a long-running land dispute with a private Chinese firm urged the government to issue them proper land titles during a press conference in the capital yesterday.

Representative Chhai Beng Hout asked the government to instruct the company – Union Development Representative Chhai Beng Hout asked the government to instruct the company – Union Development Group Co, Ltd – to allow residents to remain on their land. The area could easily be carved out of the company’s 4 5,000-hectare land concession, he said.

In 2008, Union Development Group received a 36,000 hectare land grant from the government to build a US$5 billion mega-tourism zone in Botum Sakor and Kiri Sakor districts. Such a concession breaches Cambodian land law, which limits government land concessions to private companies to 10,000 hectares.

Villagers ask for Government’s Help in Koh Kong Land Dispute

Koh Kong villagers facing the loss of their land to a Chinese mega-tourism project held a news conference in Phnom Penh yesterday to appeal to the government for the right to remain on their property.

Kith Ten, 54 , from Kiri Sakor district’s Prek Khsach commune, one of 13 village representatives speaking at the conference at NGO Forum’s headquarters, said that workers from Chinese firm Union Development Group (UDG) had threatened villagers and forced them to accept compensation to move off their land. …

Since 2008, a project has been under way to turn part of Koh Kong’s once-pristine coastline into a $3.8 billion tourism zone, complete with hotels, golf courses and an airport. The government has given UDG permission to clear 36,000 hectares, or about a quarter, of Botum Sakor National Park for their extensive plans. …

More than 250 villagers blocked National Road 4 8 yesterday in Koh Kong province while protesting against their eviction from their Kiri Sakor district homes, slowing traffic for more than eight hours, officials said…

Prom Sann, a representative for the villagers, said the protesters represented 250 families who have not received two hectares of land that was promised to them in compensation for leaving their coastal village and relocating to a site about 15km inland…

Protesters have been resisting China’s Union Development Group since 2008, when the government approved the firm’s $3.8 billion property project, which is designed to come complete with its own airport, golf course and high-end hotel complexes. Villagers Struggle in Face of Chinese Tourism Project

Villagers along the Koh Kong province’s coastline have been relocated by a Chinese development company as they have not been granted access to their farm land which falls within the development area and are running short of food. 20 tons of rice have been delivered by local authorities to the 4 13 villagers. China’s Union Development Group plans to build an airport in the Botum Sakor National Park on 30,000 hectares that was granted as a concession in 2008, along with the airport they plan to turn the area into a tourism zone with hotels and a golf course.
