IUVWnns Thecomposition of the floraof thesewoodlands, forests and wetlands was found to be unusual, havinga muchcloser relationship with the flora of the DadingScarp than was previously recognisedin the botanicalliterature.

Thevegetation associations of the sandiersoils of the easternside of the Plainhave close affinities with the vegetationof the BassendeanSands to the west whilestill retaininga degreeof affinity with the fforaof the DarlingScarp. However an areaof BanksiaWoodland was identified, within the metropolitanarea, that hasclose affinities with the flora of the Scarpand the northernsandplains andas suchis a uniqueassociation in needof reservation.

Some important areas of remnantvegetation on the Ridge Hill Shelf are identified and recommendationsmade for their reservation.A rare vegetation type, Eucalyptus lanepoolei Woodlandwas identified in this area.

The need for a flora conservationreserve on the DandaraganPlateau, south of GinGinalso became apparent during the survey. 'eaie eql Jo sadeosaa.4enbrun aq1 aruese:do1 ureldlelseoJ ueMSeql Jo aprs uralsee eqt JoJpedole^ap eq plnoqsaurtuelbo.rd 6uque;d eall 1eoo1y 9 NOtl.VONlnhtOflu

NOlrSnoourNl o'l 2 - the presenceof a significantnumber of taxa endemicto this easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain. - the incompleteknowledge of the flora, as indicatedby the occurrenceof many poorly known taxa.

The only other detailed study is that of Speckand Baird( l 984) on the Yule Brook Reserve, Canningrton, which supportsihese sametrends. Ninevegetation associations are describedand a flor" oiSSO taxa listed for this Reserveof 28 ha. Noneof the associationsare directly equivalentto those at the Brixton St Wetlandswhich is located only two kilometresaway'

Thesedetailed studies establish that the vegetationassociations in the the study areaare complexand varied, They also indicatethe importanceof detailedvegetation and floristic studies in assessingthe conservationvalue of remnantvegetation.

1 .4 GeomorphologY and Soils

The study area is part of the SwanCoastal Plain. The SwanCoastal Plain is the surface expressionof the phanlrozoic sedimentarydeposits of the PerthBasin. lts eastern boundaryis marked by scarps and associatedfeatures. South ;f Bullsbrookthis boundaryis the surfaceexpression of the Archaean yilgarnBlock, the DarlingPlateau, separated from the PerthBasin by the DarlingFault. The Fault is lctually 1-2 km west of the DarlingScarp and obscured by the sedimentsof.the.Perth Basin. North of-Bullsbrookthe DarlingFault is separatedfrom the SwanCoastal Plain by the Dandaragan Plateau, the westernedge of whichis formedby the GinGinScarp.

The SwanCoastal Plain consists of a sequenceof allwialdeposits in the east, the areaof this study' and a seriesof aeoliandeposits in the west.

McArthurand Bettenay( 1960) dividedthe Plainfrom east to west into a seriesof geomorphic elementseach with a iharacteristicsuite of soils, generally bearing the samename. Fromeast to west these are the alluvialsoils of the RidgeHill Shelf and PinjarraPlain and the aeoliansoils of the Bassendean,Spearwood and QuindalupDunes.

SinceMcArthur and Bettenay'spioneering publication more detailedsmall scale soils maps (1: 250 000) of the swan coastalPlain have beei madeby churchwardand McArthur(1980). Detailed mapsat a muchlarger scale (1: 50 OOO)of muchof the SwanCoastal Plain have also been produced by Van Goot(199d), Wettsind Hesp(1989), Kingand Wells(1990) and McArthur(l987).

Thisstudy usesthe geomorphicand soil boundaries of the detailedstudies and the generalboundaries of Churchwardand McArthur( 1980) wheredetailed maps are not available'

The study area, the eastem side of the SwanCoastal Plain, can be consideredin the three sectlons relatedto geomorphologyand soils' i) DandaraganPlateau, western margins - the Reaganand Coonambidgeeunits of Churchwardand McArthur(1980) and Reaganof Kingand Wells (1990).

The of westernmargins of the DandaraganPlateau are sometimes referred to as the foothillsof the Dandaraganplateaul Forthis studythJwestern margins of the DandaraganPlateau includes adjacent portions;f the Reaganand Coonambidgeeunits. The Reaganunit of gently to moderatelyinclined slopesof yellow or-grey sandy soils foimed from the weatheringof the sedimentaryrocks and its remnantliteritic spurs mergesto the west with the Coonambidgeeunit of deep grey sands.

ii) RidgeHill Shelf - Foothills, wells and Hesp ( 1989); Forrestfield, churchwardand McArthur ( 1979) and Kingand Wells( 1990)

A narrowdissected strip from 1-3 km in width slopinggently to the west and formingthe foothills of the DarlingScarp. lt consistsof streamdeposited ioalescing alluvial fans and remnantsof marine terraces. Iniome areasresidual laterite occurs on the surface. The soilsare moderatelywell to well drained.

2.0 METHODSand LIMITATIONS

2-7 lntroduction

This survey was designedto give sufficient detail of the vegetation associations, including their condition,of the remnantvegetation of the easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain between Pinjarra and GinGinto provide a basisfor recommendationson the flora conservationvalue of these remnants.

?.2 Selection of Areas of Remnant Vegetation

2.2-1 Soils

The vegetation survey in this study was tied to soil type, the alluvialsoils of the eastern side of the SwanCoastal Plain. The study area is consideredin the three sectionsrelated to geomorphologyand soil outlinedpreviously (see Section1.4).

i) DandaraganPlateau, western margins ii) RidgeHill Shelf iii) The Pinjarra Plain

Forthe purposesof this study divisionsof the PinjarraPlain were madebased on the detailedsoil mapsand experiencegained in the study.

Thesebroad divisions relate to a) SlightlyElevated Plain b) Wetlands c) DrainageLines d) Lakes

0n the PinjarraPlain this surveyconcentrated on the heaviersoils, clays and loams, and the overlyingBassendean Sands where the influenceof thesesoils was evident. Muchof the Pinjarra Plain, particularly the area between WelshpoolRd and MaidaVale Rd and west of Ellen Brook from Wannamalto Gincinhas a varyingdegree of surfuceexpression of BassendeanSands. Someof these areaswere, on considerationof the vegetation, obviously influenced by the presenceof alluvialsoils of the PinjarraPlain underlying them and includedin this Study. Experiencein the southernarea, where detailedsoil mapswere available, was usedto establisha concept of the vegetation associated with soils that had a surfaceexpression of BassendeanSands but influencedby the underlying allwium. Consequentlyareas of the SouthernRiver unit, an aeoliandeposit (Churchward and McArthur),were includedin the study and someof the Yangaunit, a alluvialdeposit(Churchward and McArthur),were excludedfrom the Study.

This pattern of overlyingsand was furthercomplicated north of Bullsbrookwhere the sandysoils of varyingorigin from the Reagan,Coonambidgee and Yangaunits occur in very closeproximity.

2.2-Z Locating the Areas of Remnant Vegetation

The areasof remnantvegetation were identified using aerial photographs, soil mapsand by field examinationof the study area. Individualareas of remnantvegetation are referred to as locations. One hundredand forty locationswere described.

This selectionprocedure was supplementedby mapsproduced by the the GeographicInformation System (GlS) Unit of the Departmentof Agricultureshowing remnant vegetation, soils and cadastre. These were not availableuntil part way through the study so could not alwaysbe used in planningthe groundsurvey. alrs e lEqrleeje ur lleursos uorlesolaql rolpue paqrnFlp os sEMuotlelaoa^ eql suortBcolauos lv

6 could not describedand only a generaldescription of the locationwas made. To describean individual site would have been uninforma-tiveand in these casesthe whole locationwas describedafter survey of the entire area. These generaldescription include detailed listings of speciespresent.and p.U"Uf" vegetation assoc-iationswhen ihe locationis consideredto be of particularsignificance.

Muchof the vegetation in the study area is completelyDegraded and warranted only a brief descriptionforlxample that for Bird Rd, Location 14. (Appendix 1). These descriptionsare includedas they give an ideaof the extent of the vegetationassociations before Europeansettlement and as such ari important in assessingthe flora conservationvalue of the remnants. Small remnantsof once widespreadassociat]ons are of significantflora conservationvalue even though their size and condition alonewould not indicatethis.

Areas of remnant vegetation of high conservationvalue with enough relatively undisturbed vegetation associatio-nsand with a reasonablechance of beingretained for c^onservationpurposes we"reselected for detailedflora and vegetationsurvey as part of the SwanCoastal Plain Survey (see nppenaixj). This detailedSurvey will-be the subjeclof a threeto four year study from 1990 to 1994.

2.4 Assessment of the Flora

A detailedflora survey was beyondthe scopeand requirementsof this Study. Howeverlimited data on the flora of the eaitern side of the SwanCoastal Plain from various sources: - flora data collected in this Survey - detailedflora data beingaccumulated through the Swancoastal Plain Survey (Keighery and Keighery,1992a, b &c, 1993 in PreP) - Floraof the PerthRegion (Marchant et al) - Herbariumrecords - MetropolitanRegion Rare Flora Survey (Kelly' 1990- onwards) was collatedin a similarmanner to flora data fol the BrixtonSt Wetlands(see Section1.3) The three groupingsare: 1) faxi pr6Ua-Utyconfined the eastemside of the SwanCoastal Plain and the DadingScarp in the perth Regionand possiblyfound elsewhere(see Table 4, annotated with 4# in the location descriptions) occurringin other Z)' Taxa probablyconfined to the easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain and regions(Table 5, annotatedwith 5# in the locationdescriptions) endemicto the Swan 3 )' fia proUaUtyconfined to the easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain and CoastalPlain (Table 6, annotatedwith 6# in the locationdescriptions)

2-5 Limitations

A few locationswere not the subject of detailedsite decriptions. Privateland that was fenced was generallysurveyed from the fenieline. Someof the locationswere not accessible, these are noted in the descriptions(see AppendixI ).

Locationsthat were knownto be the subject of previousstudies are includedusing these reports whenthey were availablefor use. The drying Sectionsof many locationswere underwater or extremelyboggy at the time -ofthe.study. ioils in these areasoften support Herblandsof annualand geophyticspecies if they have not been.too disturbed. Disturbancein these areasis characterisedby weed invasionand can only be assessed whenthe areasare drier. Consequentlythe conditionrating of suchareas is conditionaland can only be fully assessedwhen the areasare drier. This assessmentneeds to be madewhen conditionsare appropriateand can take severalyears.

Not all patchesof remnantvegetation were visited. Howeverit was consideredthat sufficient were surveyed- to establish - a clearer picture of the vegetation of the area prior to Europeansettlement - an indication of areas suitable for flora conservation - directions and priorities for further studies in the study area saNasel uotlee.lleJ- sallsuitol paoola^epun- spueldu:epluacefpe pue spuelduns- 'spos slros letnnlle6ur{;leno pues ta:ood -

5.0 VEGETATION

5.1 Catalogue of Remnant Vegetation Associations

The principalvegetation associationsin the study areaare outlinedbelow. These are consideredin the groupingsrelated to geomorphic/soilunits outlined previously (see Section1.4 & 2.2.1). These are i) the western marginsof the DandaraganPlateau ii) the RidgeHill Shelf iii) the Pinjarra Plain a) SlightlyElevated Plain b) Wetlands c) Drainagelines d) Lakes

The principalbroad vegetation associationsare givenfor each of these geomorphic/soilunits and the areasconsidered of highestconservation value on eachare listed. The locationsbeing surveyed in the SwanCoastal Plain Survey are in bold print'

5.2 Western Margins of Dandaragan Plateau

The characteristicvegetation of the lateritic spursof the Reaganunit is Wandooor.Powderbark WandooOpen Forestio Woodlandover tall Shrublandand a Low Open Heathor Heath (Figure7). Similarlywith the associationsof the RidgeHill Shelfthe vegetation of th-eReagan unit has many speciei characteristic of the associationson the DarlingScarp, such as Gompholobiumaristatum, Aakea lissocarpha, Dryandn armate, Gastrolobium spinosum and trifurcata

Marriand Jarrahtrees arefound throughoutthe unit and on the sandiersoils further to the west' form areasof Woodlandto OpenForesf(Figure B) dominatedby either or both species. At times the Marri may occur with scatteied Jarrah over scattered Eankslaforming a mixed woodland or as scattere; trees over BanksiaLow Woodlandcontaining scattered Eucalyptustodtiana (Figure l0).

The characteristic understorey is a well developedshrub strata, being at times high shrubland andlor shrubland, open heath and heath. The shrubspecies in these associationsbecome increasinglysimilar to those found in much BanksraWoodland such as Adenanthoscygnorum' Allocasuiiina humilis, stoechadis, latifolia, Eremaea pauciflora, Mesomelaenapseudostygia and Alexgeorgeanitens. ln the shrub strata in the Marri and Jarrah Open Forest or Woodlandand ihe MarriWoodland there is a considerableelement of Scarpspecies. This is are 'Gomphol$iumparticularlyevident in the drainagelines descending from the Scarp. Characteristicspecies aistatum, Baeckei camphorosmaq lsopqon aspr, lsopogon dubius and .

Within the Marri and Jarrah Woodland, apparently on patchesof deeper sand, the shrub strata occur as an associationwith scattered trees, often of a malleeform (Figure 1 1)' This Open Heath over Low Shrublandis similar floristically to the shrub strata of Banksrawoodland, having Allocasuarina humilis, Catytrix angulata, Conostephium pendulum, Bossiaeaeriocarpa, Alexgeorgea nltens and Mesomefaena pseudostygia.

One species found at Tafbot Rd,Aristrda contort4 was a new recordfor the Perth Region.

Nemcia? spathulatum, a speciesof particularinterest found at only one location, PageRd (Location 30),is furtherindication of the closerelationship between the flora of the Scarpand the RidgeHill Shelf.

Marn- Eucalyptuslanepoolei Low Woodlandor OpenWoodland (Figure 14) was only found on the RidgeHill Shelf and an adjacentrelatively flat areaof the PinjarraPlain (Lambert Lane,Location 5), includedhere under the RidgeHill Shelf because of its vegetationand soils.

BetweenArmadale and PinjarraEucalyptus lanepoolei and Wandooare confined to within approximately1 km of the Scarpand were not found extendingon to the mainbody of the Swan CoastalPlain. North of Armadalethe Wandooextends further on to the SwanCoastal Plain, occurring on the PinjarraPlain as it alsodoes, south of Pinjarrabetween Brunswick Junction and Kirup (south of the study area). The Eucalyptuslanepoolei and WandooWoodland have particularly diverseshrub, herb and sedgestrata.

Previousdescriptions of the vegetationof the RidgeHill Shelf (Speck, I956; Smith, 1974; Seddon, 1972; Beard,1979 and Heddleet al 1980) describethe sameassociations as beingcharacteristic of thesesoils but give lessdetail on the understoreyand its relationshipwith the flora of the Scarp. Someof the lesscommon associations such as the Jacksoniastembergiana Open Scrub were generallynot describedby these authors. Howeverit was interestingto find that Speckdescribed this associationin his pioneeringstudy of the SwanCoastal Plain as there was some speculationin the early stagesof this study that this associationwas the result of long term diebackinfestation. As Speckdescribed the associationit is likelythat it is an associationthat forms in relationto sandy soilson the lowerslopes of the RidgeHill Shelf adjacent to areasof lateriticsoil.

rlmr W Eucalvptusrudis and Melaleucaraphiophvlla Open Forest to Woodland, This, the predominantassociation along drainage lines, was not foundin anythingbut VeryDegraded Condition. A foot surveyof the linesmay find someareas in better condition.

5.4 Pinjarra Plain

Drainageand soil type are apparentlythe determiningfactors of the occurrenceof vegetation associationson the PinjarraPlain and consequentlyassociations are groupedbelow accordingto these two factors. Howeverthe whole areaof the PinjarraPlain is so flat and drainageso poor that these divisionsare at times arbitrary and the vegetation associationsform mosaicsas describedin the sectionon Wetlands.

5.4.1 Slightly Elevated Plain

(a) Well drained sandy rises

JarrahWoodland is the most commonassociation on the summitsof the sandy rises in the study area. However the Jarrah generallyoccurs with Marri, Allocasuarinafraseriana and Banksiaspecies (8. attenuata,B. menziesiiand B. grandis) in variouscombinations and densities(Figure 17). Marri is more common(Figure 18) on the heaviersoils and Banksiaand Allocasuarina on the sandiersoils. Xylomelumoccidentale and Persooniaelliptica are relatively common but always in low density. Persooniaelliptica was only observedbetween Location 58 and Location82 but it was also observed south of the study area, west of Capel.

On the slopesof the rises,on the lowerrises and on the sandywell drained flats the proportionof increases to form BanksiaLow Woodlandor Open Forest.

Denseshrub strata are characteristicof theseassociations, generally low open heathto low shrublandwith open herblandandlor opensedgeland. Species of particularinterest associated with this association are Grevilleapilulifera, multiflora and Mesomelaenapseudostygia. (this contrasts with Mesomelaenatetragona which is typically found in the heavy soil PinjarraPlain associationsand is uncommonin the sandiersoils). In those associationsin which Marriis significant,on the heaviersoils, Kingia australis is generallypresent (Location 68 and 73).

BetweenWelshpool Rd and the Great EasternHwy Bypassthe variouscombinations of aeoliansands, sandyalluvial deposits and heavyalluvial deposits at depth haveresulted in uniqueunderstories containingspecies that aretypical of the adjacentcommunities with other speciesnormally found muchfurther away, particularly to the north. Someof thesespecies occur north and south of this part of the study area but the numberof these speciesoccurring in the same associationresults in these apparentlyunique associations. The adjacentvegetated areas of the RidgeHill Shelfare also rich in these species, particularly those underlinedin the paragraphbelow.

Examplesof suchspecies are: - from the sandplainsto the north: Calvtrixaurea (Darling Scarp and north to Eneabba), Conothamnustrinervis, Actinostrobus acuminatus, (north to Cliff Head) Eremaea fimbiata (Eneabba),lsopogon drummondii(Jurien Bay), Banksia incana (Badgingarrato 35 km N Eneabba,Taylorand Hopper, 1988), Dasypogonobliquifolius (north to Eneabba)and Pityrodiabartlingii (Geraldtonto Busseltonand inland to the wheatbelt)(Table 5) - from the Scarpi Stylidium affine, . Calytrix aurea (Darling Scarp and north to Eneabba),Jacksoniarestioides, Dryandre armata. . , Cvathochaeta avenacee,Mesomelaena tetradone and Persooniaelliptica (Table 4)

- from the BankslaWoodlands of the BassendeanSands: Sossiaea eriocarpa, cygnorum, Eremaea pauciflora, Petrophile linearis, Patersonia occidentalis, Mesomelaena pseudostygia, Alexgeorgea nitens and Lyginia brbata.

(b) Poorly drained loamy rises

On the poorly drainedvery slight risesof sandy loamsto loamsMarri Open Forest to Woodland (Figures22 &23) is found. The characteristicstructure of the understoreyof this associationis low open shrublandover closedherbland to herblandand closedsedgeland to sedgeland.

Towardsthe DarlingScarp and south of Talbot Rd Kingiais scattered through the understorey sometimes forming a shrublandor open shrublandstratum. This stratum is apparently absent on the western side of the PinjarraPlain (Kingia is also found on the sandy loams with Marri discussed in the previous section). Characteristicspecies of this associationare Mesomeleanatetragona, Caesiamicrantha, Cyathochaeta avenacea, Grevilleapilulifen and a robust form of Drosera micrantha,

Wandooand Marri Woodlandand WandooWoodland are confinedto the areas of the PinjarraPlain associatedwith drainagelines. The understoreyof this associationwas probably similarto that of the Marri Open Forest to Woodland, perhaps with a denserlow shrub stratum as describedfor the the WandooWoodland remnant at Talbot Rd. This associationhad its greatestarea of developmenton the PinjarraPlain on the eastern sides and immediatebanks of watercoursessuch as Ellen Brook, the SwanRiver (north of the HelenaRiver), Helena River, Bickely Brook and the CanningRiver. The extent of these WandooWoodlands can now only be surmisedfrom the scattered remnanttrees and the few isolatedpockets of remainingpartially intact WandooWoodland.

The fforisticsof these woodlandassociations indicate a closeassociation with the Scarpand many of the speciesfound in these smallremnants are commonlythought to be confinedto the Scarp. Of particularinterest in the one patch of MarriOpen Forest (Duckpond Rd, Location 15) was the presence of a new record for the Perth Region,Opercularia apiciflora, Kennedia stirlingii at its eastern most fimit and the robust form of Droseramicrantha a taxon characteristic of the Marri Woodlandand Forest on the PinjarraPlain. This vegetation associationwas apparently the only western remnant of the once widespreadMarri Open Forest of the PinjarraPlain.

The results of this study indicatethat MarriOpen Forest to Woodland, was the predominant associationof muchof the PinjarraPlain as indicatedby topographyand presenceof remnantMarri over much of the area. The absenceof Jarrahis not consideredto be result of selective logging. Jarrahtrees are found to the east on the RidgeHill Shelfsoils and the well drained sandy rises of the PinjarraPlain (see section5.4.1 a) wherelogging should have removed these trees if loggingis used to account for the absenceof these this specieson this section of the PinjarraPlain. lt is well known that Jarrah will regrow from lignotubersafter logging but there was no such Jarrah found on the poorly drainedloamy rises.

The MarriOpen Forestto Woodland, the WandooWoodland and Wandooand MarriWoodland are effectively completelycleared. There are no substantialareas of these associationsremaining, these associationsbeing confinedto severalisolated pockets and smallareas generally associated with the wetlands. No large tract remainsas these associationswere found on the soils most favoured for agriculturaldevelopment.

The structure of the understoreydescribed, low open shrublandover closed herblandto herblandand closedsedgeland to sedgeland, does not conformwith somedescriptions in the literature of the understorey of this area of the PinjarraPlain. Historicalaccounts of the PinjarraPlain referred to previously(see Section3), principallythat of Fraser(March, 1827 in Seddon,1972) describe the "...magnificentAngophoras (Eucalyptus calophylla) " and "The Brome,or Kangaroe.grassof New South Wales in great luxuriance"and observationsof other early settlers have developedthe concept that the area had an "open, park-likeappearance...with scattered trees and the grassy ground layer.". LT t8 MundijongRd (Locatioin23) and at the M 14 (Location109) show similarlevels of diversity.

Another study (Griffin and Keighery,1989), which includedthe wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain, mostly on the BassendeanSands between GinGin and Jurien,.showedthe samediversity between wetland areas.

This floristic diversity between wetlands is matched in the study area by a floristic diversity expressedover time within the associations. The wetlandsare very rich in geophytes and annuals as weff as a series of perennialsthat are inconspicuousfor most of the year; for example,Drosen species,Borya speciesand Styrd, umspecies. Thesespecies grow and flower over short periodsof time when conditions are optimal. This may be when - the soils are just wet in early winter; for example, many sedges, Baumea species -the soils are pondingin winter; for example,Aponogeton hexatapalus, Wurmbea species and Inbonanthes soecies - the soils of the ponds are drying, but still inundated,in Spring; for example, Stylidium species,Amphibromus nees) (SwampWallaby Grass), Asteraceae species, Apiaceae species, annual sedges,Centrolepidaceae species and Cyperaceaespecies'for - the soils of the ponds are nearly dry in early summer; example, another suite of Stylidiumspecies, Asteraceae species, Apiaceae species, annual sedges, Centrolepidaceae and Cyperaceaespecies.

Thesecycles of waterloggingand drying and the smallchanges in topographyand drainagewithin the one locationprovide a seriesof conditionsthat will supporta variedflora. The apparentlyendemic flora of the eastern side of the SwanCoastal Plain is mostly, relatedto these wetland conditions(see Table6 and Section4).

Thisdiversity is probablybest documentedin the BrixtonSt Wetlands(see Sections1.3 &4.0)

Today the wetlands are the most commonremnant vegetation associations on the PinjarraPlain (Figures2a &2b). This is no doubt relatedto the difficultiesassociated with developingareas that are seasonallyinnundated but this is alsorelated to the originalextent of these wetlands. Previous work on the vegetation of the PinjarraPlain have apparentlyunderestimated the extent of these wetlandsand concentratedon the areasof woodland.

Most vegetation associationsof the PinjarraPlain, excepting those on the sandy rises, are seasonally innundatedto some extent. The Marriand WandooWoodlands of the PiniarraPlain are associated with winter wet soils and scattered through them are areasof wetland, for exampleat DuckpondRd (Location l5) and the PearceTownsite (Location 100). All the Casuerinaobesa Woodlanos (Figures25 &26) documentedin this studywere associated with understoriestypical of the wetland vegetationassociations, Also the soilsof the Casuainaobesa Woodlands were often innundatedto the extent that there was free water on the surface,so these Woodlandsare groupedwith the wetlandsin this study.

To considerthe wetlandsin detailthey are dividedaccording to the presenceof sandand clay and the degreeof innudation.

Permanentor nearpermanent lakes were not studiedin detail.

a) Very poorly drained loams and clay flats

Casuainaobesa Low OpenWoodland to Low Woodlandis characteristicof the very poody drained loamsand clay flats found south of FonestdaleLake and north of Pearce. in the south this associationhas been almost completelycleared. The most extensiveremnants observed are confined to the roadsideon the DrainReserve and RoadReserve along Abernathy, Orton and MundijongRoads and one small pocket of private land on AbernathyRd. To the north two pockets remainnear GinGin at Lake Bambunand the T/O to Gincinfrom the BrandHwy. Substantial, though disturbed, remnants are to found alongthe railwayline between Muchea and GinGin.

It was apparent from the study of these smalldisjunct remnantsthat the CasuarinaLovv Woodlands were associatedwith a mosaicof smallervegetation associations similar to those describedfor the cfayey areas subject to ponding(see Section 5.4.2c). - off road vehicleuse (Figures39 &40) - repetitive burning (Figures43 &44) - drainage(Figures 40 &41) - weed invasion(Figure 38) - use as servicecorridors (Figure 3'l ). Whilesome managed areas are subject to disturbancecaused by "enrichment" - planting(Figure 4'l ) - proliferationof tracks(Figures 38,39,40 &42) - rubbishdumping (Figure 46) - repetitiveburning (Figure |8)

Someof theseactivities in the managedareas are well meaning but showa lackof understandingof the value and nature of the remnantvegetation.

Thesedisturbance factors can destroy or reducethe densityof the criticalshrub, herb and sedge strata. To maintainthe areasin GoodCondition it is essentialthat the remnantsbe managedto maintainthese strata and to re-establishthese strata in the severelydisturbed areas. Guidelines for the managementof remnantvegetation in urbanor nearurban areas need to be establishedand must be basedon an understandingof nativevegetation and the factors that constitute disturbance.

The Serpentine-Jarrahdale (Locations 1 9a &b) and Armadale(Location 41 &l0) Councilsare commendedfor their efforts in retainingareas of remnantvegetation as designatedflora reserves and managingthese reseryes. Such measures could be takenfor the remnantvegetation of local governmentlands identified in this study .

In the long term the conservationof thesesmall areas of remnantvegetation will only be achieved with grassrootscommunity support for intensivemanagement programmes. Such programmes have been instigatedin some urbanreserves such as PointWalter (Melville) and Star Swamp(stirling). Trainingcourses for individualswho wishto be involvedin bushregeneration are availableat the APACECentre in North Fremantle. These courses, although relatively new in WesternAustralia, are well attendedand indicatethe substantiallevel of communityinterest in participatingin the maintenanceof remnantvegetation. Considering the locatronof the study area, close to largegroups of people.such community support ts available.

Of particularsignificance are the areasof remnantvegetation adjacent to schools, for example adjacentto KelmscottSenior High School (Location 43), GrovelandsPrimary School in Kelmscott (Location52), MaddingtonSenior High School (Location 56), EdneyPrimary School in High Wycombe(Location 79) and BullsbrookDistrict High School ( Location102). Remnantvegetation associatedwith schoolsis a uniqueteaching resource. The remnantvegetation provides a living resourcefor study of the wonder, diversity and managementof bushland,an importantpart of our heritage. Manyschools are runningeducational programmes on bushland.Retaining these areas nearschools supports these programmesand relievesthe pressureson naturereserves. Also, rn the longterm the educationalprogrammes in schoolswill leadto a better appreciationof the importance of retainingnative remnant vegetation.

RECOMMENDATION2 All owners or managing authorities of land containing remnant vegetation should be contacted with information concerning the significance and nature of the remnant vegetation on the alluvial soils of the eastem side of the Swan Coastal Plain with particular reference to the vegetation on their Iand.

RECOMMENDATION3 Local Government Authorities in co-operation with the appropriate bodies should develop a Remnant Vegetation Manual outlining guide-lines for the management of remnant bushland. Workshops on the application of the guide-lines should be held periodically with the appropriate management groups.

Recommendation CALMliaise urgently with the Local GovernmentAuthority andlor land owners to retain and manage the area for its flora conservationvalues towards havingthe locationacquired and declaredan A ClassReserve for the conservationof flora, vested in the NPNCA.

RECOMMENDATION4 lmmediate action should be taken to ensure that the twenty two areas of remnant vegetation subject to individual recommendations (see Section 6.3) are vested and managed for the conservation of flora as their main purpose, according to the specific recommendation for each area.

6.3.3 Areas of Remnant Vegetation Adjacent to the Study Area

The most extensiveareas of remnantvegetation identified in the courseof this study were outsidethe studyarea to the north-eastand north-westof Muchea.

Muchof the areato the northwest of lt4ucheais in the GnangaraWater Mound and is underno immediatethreat from clearing.

The vegetationto the nortlFeastof Mucheais on the DandaraganPlateau and its westem marginsand all in orivate ownershio.

Presentlythere are no significantreseryes on the DandaraganPlateau south of GinGineven though thereare considerableamounts of remnantvegetation in GoodCondition extant. Thereis an opportunityat presentfor a reserveof considerablesize to be establishedthat includesthe DandaraganPlateau and its westernmargins. The loppoloRd (Location 1 19) and BreeraRd (Location1 21 ) areasare in needof further investigationwith the view to establishinga flora conservationreserve in this sectronof the study areaincluding the PinjarraPlain to the west, the Reaganunit and the DandaraganPlateau to the east. The occurrenceof an undescribedChamelaucium in one smallarea along loppolo Rd (Location 1 19) supportsthis needfor further investigation.

The loppoloRd area, east and south east to the remnantvegetation block south of YalalBrook, with a connectionto LakeChandalla to the west is perhapsthe bestoption (Location Map ? ). Thiswould createa bufferto the east for LakeChandalla Nature Reserve. All of this landis in orivatehands and muchis subjectto sandmining leases.

RECOMMENDATION5 The remnant vegetation identified on the Reagan soil unit and Dandaragan Plateau south of GinGin should be urgently surveyed to determine the most suitable area to be acquired for a tlora conservation reserye.

There are a seriesof locationsidentified in the study that still requirefurther investigationor are the subject of other surveys. Recommendationson these areasawait the outcomesof these investigations. The recommendationsin this studyand the descriptionsof the vegetationassociations characteristicof the studyarea can be usedto supplementthe workof theseinvestigations. One area, the PearceAirforce Base is inciudedin the recommendationsmade in this studv but these recommendationsare subjectto futuresurvey.

7.O CONCLUSION

This survey has confirmedthat there is very little remnantvegetation on the eastern side of the SwanCoastal Plain. The few remainingremnants are small, scattered and disjunct. They have escapedclearing for agricultureand urbanisationas they were generally unsuitablefor these purposesbeing on the poorer, sandy soils or soilsthat are seasonallyinundated. A few of these remnantsare areasthat were set asidefor a public purposewhich has not eventuated, such as townsites, or the purposehas only impactedon a portion of the area, such as rail verges and gravel mines.

Thereis so little nativevegetation remaining in this extensivearea that it is recommendedthat action be taken to conseryeall of the vegetationin Pooror better Conditionon both public and private landsregardless of the size of these remnants. Sucha recommendationis unusualas such smallareas are not generallyseen as viableconservation areas. However, with the appropriate management,at the local governmentand communitylevel many of these small remnantscan maintaintheir conservationvalues which otherwise will be lost entirelyas they are not replicated elsewhere.lf actionis not takento conservethese remaining remnants the future for the unique vegetationassociations of the easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain is bleakand all the associations will be reducedto a few isolatedpockets of vegetationfacing extinction.

Twentytwo specificrecommendations are made conceming areas of highconservation value. A seriesof criteria were used in the selectionof these areasto ensurethat the areasselected would encompassthe rangeof vegetationassociations characteristic of the vegetationassociations that are still extant in the study area. Unfortunatelythe areasinvolved are relativelysmall.

As a result of selectiveclearing of the vegetationon agriculturallydesirable soils the remnant vegetation in the study areais not representativeof the vegetationthat occurredon the easternside of the SwanCoastal Plain at the time of Europeansettlement. This fact wasappreciated early in the study and it was necessaryto survey as many areasof remnantvegetation as possible, regardless of theirsize and conditionto establishwith anydegree of certaintythe vegetationassociations that were characteristicof the study areabefore clearing. The vegetationof the study area was found to havebeen a complexof vegetationassociations that are structurallyand floristicallydiverse.

Forthe purposesof this studythe eastemside of the SwanCoastal Plain was dividedinto three geomorphological/soilunits: the westernmargins of the DandaraganPlateau, the RidgeHill Shelf and the PinjarraPlain. The characteristicvegetation associations of these three main units were determined.

DandaraoanPlateau and the RidqeHill Shelf

Thevegetation associations described for the westernmargins of the DandaraganPlateau and the RidgeHill Shelf were directlycomparable with thoseof previoussmall scale vegetation studies. Someimportant areas of remnantvegetation on thesetwo geomorphological/soilunits were identifiedand recommendationsmade for their reservation.A rareand previouslyundescribed vegetation association,Marri and EucalyptuslanepooleiLow Woodland was identifiedon the Ridge Hill Shelf.

PiniarraPla in

The complexsuite of vegetationassociations identified on the PinjarraPlain were relatedto a complexsuite of soilsand drainage conditions. The mainassociations are: Eucalyptuscalophylla (Marri) Woodlandto Open Forest Casuarinaobesa (Salt Water Sheoak)Woodland Eucalyptus calophylla and Eucalyptus wandoo (tNandoo) Woodlandto Open Forest Eucalyptuswandoo Woodlandto Open Forest Eucalyptusrudis (FloodedGum) Woodlandto Forest WedandAssociations, a complexmosaic of shrublands, heaths, sedgelands and herblands.

Threeof these associations, the Eucalyptuscalophylla Woodland to OpenForest, Casuarinaobesa Woodlandand the WetlandAssociations are recognisedas havingbeen the most commonvegetation associationsof the PinjarraPlain prior to Europeansettlement. only one of these associations, the wetlands,is presentlysignificantly represented in the remnantvegetation areas. Table 2: Vegetation ConditionScale (Trudgen, 1990)

E = Excellent.Pristine or nearlyso, no obvioussigns of damagecaused by the activitiesof Europaeanman.

vG = Very good. Somerelatively siight signs of damage causedby the activitiesof Europaenman. E.g.some signs of damageto tree trunks calrsedby rep€atedfire and the presenceof some relatively non-agressiveweeds such as Ursinia anthemoides or Briza spp., or occasionaivehicle tracks.

G = Good. More obvioussigns of damagecaused by the activitiesof Europaenman, induding someobvious impact on the vegetationstrucfure such as causedby lorv levelsof grazingor by selectivelogging. Weedsas above, possibly plus somemore

-b6_'--_: oorp

P = Poor. Still retainsbasic vegetation structure or ability to regenerateio it after very obviousimpacts of aciivitiesof Europaenman suchas grazingor partiai clearing(chaining) or very frequentfires. Weedsas above, probably plus somemore aggressiveones such as Ehrharta spp.

VP = Very poor. Severeifimpacted by grazing, fire, clearingor a combinationof theseactivities. Scope for someregeneration but, not to a stateapproaching good conditionwithout intensivemanagement. Usually with a numberof weedspecies includingaggressive species.

D = Completelydegraded. Areas that are completelyor amostcompletely without nativespecies in the structureof their vegetation.I.e. areas that are clearedor "parkland cleared"with their flora comprising weed or crop specieswith isolated native treesor shrubs.
