'Karakoram Eagle' Joins the Elite No 4 Squadron Of ‘KARAKORAM EAGLE’ JOINS THE ELITE NO 4 SQUADRON OF PAF Karachi 26 February, 2015:- No 4 Squadron, one of the premier squadrons of the PAF, has been re-equipped with state of the art Chinese built Karakoram Eagle AWACS aircraft. A historic ceremony in this regard was held at an operational PAF Base today. Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was the Chief Guest at the occasion. Governor Sindh Dr. Irshat ul Ibad, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Ambassador of Peoples republic of China Mr Sun Weidong, General Rashad Mahmood, Chairman Joint Chiefs of staff Committee, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, High ranking Officials from Ministry of Defence & Defence Forces and ex Squadron Commanders of 4 Squadron, were also present at the occasion. The proceedings of the historic event commenced with a parade which was reviewed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The Chief Guest also presented the Squadron Colour to the squadron commander in recognition of the meritorious services of the squadron ever since its inception in August 1959. Speaking at the occasion, the Prime Minister said, “History of Pakistan Air Force is replete with acts of heroism, sacrifices and professionalism. PAF due to its saga of feats of gallantry has made its niche amongst the comity of finest Air Forces of the world. Moreover, PAF has always proven equal to the task even in the most challenging times and has measured up to the expectations of the nation. The fast emerging threat posed by the forces of extremism and militancy is another menace that needs to be eliminated before it brings any more damage to our progression, social fibre, international image and national security. I am happy that PAF has contributed tremendously in the operations against the miscreants and has always remained steadfast in safeguarding national security against any threat be it external or internal. The whole nation takes great pride in the significant successes achieved by PAF in the precise targeting of terrorists’ hideouts.” He further said, “Pakistan is a peace-loving country, and pursues peaceful relations with international community specially our neighbours. However, we stand determined to safeguard our national interests and uphold our sovereignty against any aggressor.” Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, Chief of Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force while addressing at the occasion, said “The event is not only a significant moment for the Squadron and the PAF, it is in fact an occasion when each Pakistani can feel proud and reassured that Pakistan Air Force, in line with Quaid’s vision of being “Second to None” , is equipped with technologically advanced weapon systems. Re-equipping the Squadron with this state-of-the-art aircraft will Insha Allah enable PAF to effectively counter all threats against Pakistan’s aerial frontiers and add a new dimension to the National security.” He further said, “Induction of Karakoram Eagle AWACS would revolutionize PAF’s operational concepts. With its induction, PAF is transforming into a modern versatile and capability based force.” Later on, a short documentary on the history and milestones achieved by the squadron over the years was shown to the guests. A formation of Karakoram Eagle aircraft also presented a fly past. Karakorum Eagle AWACS can detect aerial as well as sea surface targets at fairly long ranges regardless of their height. It maintains link with ground command and control centers to provide comprehensive air picture. With the addition of AWACS, Pakistan Air Defense is now able to look deeper in enemy territory, be it land or sea. After an early detection, AWACS can direct own fighter aircraft to intercept or neutralize the emerging threat, well before it can threaten our national assets. AWACS ability of detecting sea targets would also enhance the capabilities of Pakistan Navy. .

  • Is John Brennan Shaping Pakistan’S New
IS JOHN BRENNAN SHAPING PAKISTAN’S NEW COUNTERTERRORISM PROGRAM? There are now multiple reports (one of the earliest is here) that while the world was concentrating on a number of pressing developments in the Ukraine and elsewhere last week, John Brennan slipped into Pakistan to pay a quiet visit. The visit seems to me to cap a series of developments that have taken place over the last few months to put into place a counterterrorism program in Pakistan that seems modeled on the US plan. Almost exactly a month ago, I had wondered whether Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was making a play for US counterterrorism funds that would become available as the US withdraws its troops from Afghanistan. Pakistan Today has a summary of the series of meetings that has brought us to this point: After a nearly three-year long freeze Pak-US relations are on the mend once again. Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Islamabad paved way for Nawaz Sharif’s meeting with President Obama. In December, Pentagon Chief Chuck Hagel was in Pakistan where he also met the new COAS Gen Sharif. The prime minister’s meeting with President Obama in October was followed by a flurry of visits by civilian and military leaders from both sides. Important federal ministers including Sartaj Aziz, Ahsan Iqbal, Khwaja Asif and Shahid Khqan Abbasi have made several trips to Washington to discuss energy, trade and security related issues. During the last four weeks CENTOM Commander General Lloyd J Austin visited Islamabad to hold talks with COAS Gen Sharif and CJCSC Rashad Mahmood.

The last official census was held in 1983. The bulk of the Muslims live in the Rakhine State, bordering Chittagong in Bangladesh. From its west, the Rakhine State (called Arakan by the British) borders the Bay of Bengal with a fairly long coastline. In the north, River Naf separates it from Bangladesh. Evolving Political Equations in Pakistan: Can the Civilian Leadership Deliver? Savita Pande Pakistan’s transition to democracy is being much talked about because it is for the first time in the country’s political history, that an elected government has handed over the reins to another elected government after completing its term of five years. The significance of the May 2013 general elections in Pakistan for the National Assembly as well as Provincial Assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was highlighted by the fact that the voter turnout was as high as 55 per cent despite the Taliban threat (it was 44 per cent in 2008) as 46.2 million people voted (compared with 36.6 million in 2008).1 This was a significant achievement, considering that as many as 2,674 people were killed in 1,108 incidents between January and April 2013; the targets were mainly the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), sparing the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).2 The peaceful transition of the Presidency from Asif Ali Zardari to Mamnoon Hussain was also lauded as strengthening democracy, with the former credited for it “by moderating the powers of his own office and the confrontational tone of politics in general.”3 The Presidential Professor Savita Pande is Chairperson, Centre for South Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. CLAWS Journal l Winter 2013 35 SAVITA PANDE The big question election was, albeit not all that smooth in is: will Mian Nawaz Sharif, the sense that the election was boycotted by serving his third the main Opposition party, the PPP, as well term as Prime as the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Minister, be able Balochistan National Party (BNP), as the to deliver on Supreme Court had rejected the decision all the promises made by him? of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of not allowing the preponement of elections.4 For Nawaz Sharif, this is a third time victory (this time on an unexpected scale).
